@@sharonjensen3016 We already know that Tom is gay and mimics so the scene is really not so cringeworthy or unexpected to me and it's more from Dickie's reaction that we cringe not so much against Tom but in a certain alliance with him. Dickie is often a bastard who hangs out with haughty bastards like Freddie. In case you forget Dickie is only using Marge and has an affair and I believe in the book it's more evident that Dickie was sort of cruel to Marge.

With Tom hiding behind the mirror, and Dickie’s reflection covering it, this would make a perfect poster for this film. It’s like Tom hiding behind Dickie’s image, while behind that image is an insecure man, who always resented his own identity. You can see both of their face expressions, Dickie looks like he feels violated by Tom wearing his clothes, and eventually Tom violates his whole life and identity, and Tom looks horrified, like his insecurities just came spilling out, when Dickie catches him wearing his clothes, because of the expression Dickie gave him, when later on, Tom does what he can to hide is true insecure self behind Dickie’s identity, and he feels more insecure when people get close to finding out what Tom did to Dickie. This one moment kind of explains the two characters, their personalities, and their outlooks they have towards each other.

0:27 - Dickie looking at Tom as he hides behind the mirror. Tom knew how to 'mirror back' to people what they wanted to see and hear. He basically didn't really have any identity of his own. After mirroring back to them, he would eventually subsume them. What was unusual about Tom the psychopath was he felt regret for what he had done, but he could ultimately shove those feelings of guilt in his basement and go on doing what he needed to do to survive - which included killing anybody who stood in his way of survival. He would then carry on with his lifestyle of mirroring back what people wanted to see and then subsuming them. Anybody who say past the mirror and seeing the real Tom was in danger of ending up in Tom's basement, with the other dead bodies.

Agreed, except the guilt part, Tom only ever feels sorry for himself, it's all about how he's a victim, as if this is some tragedy that has befallen him, instead one of his own making. I think its more evident at the end of the film, there was a number of things he could've done other than kill that guy, but it was just easier to blot people out than try to explain his lies.

To this day I still cringe watching this scene, you could tell this was the turning point for Dicky when he started to realize Tom was a problem. You can just hear the contempt in his voice. in fairness, he did say he could borrow his jacket, so I actually thought dicky was a bit hard on him, BUT, it was clear Dicky had grown rapidly tired of Tom in the 10 minutes leading up this film. A simply amazing film, in my top 10, easily, quite probably my top 5 and if it was the last film I ever got to see, that would be ok with me.

Definitely the turning point. I don’t think Dickie was being hard on him. I think borrowing a jacket is very different from trying on more intimate items. Tom getting ready to replace Dickie. On the other hand, Dickie was starting to view Tom as a weird, 'boring' liability who probably needed to 'go'. In Dickie's mind the party was basically over and instead of viewing him as a somewhat interesting, temporary buddy, he was now starting to view him as kind of strange and the guest who outlived his welcome. Tom's awkward gayness was starting to annoy Dickie and it was time to turn the page...Tom was like another one of Dickie's "toys" and once he got bored with his latest toy he would throw it aside. However, in this case he was dealing with a toy who happened to be a psychopath and things wouldn't end well with Dickie..
