Imagine a drink of water after wandering the desert. Now consider momentarily returning to the world of the living after wandering the empty darkness of death. Those spirits are euphoric in their borrowed bodies. And that euphoria is the high those teens get. The high of contact after loneliness, isolation and touch starvation. The spirits are lonely and starved for contact. They'll say and do anything to stay.

The thing I really liked about the film and its horror is that it both were consistent with rules that were established, and if you view the film's plot against the framework of the rules of the game they explained, then everything makes sense. Both Riley and Mia exceeded the 90 second time limit, so both already had the ghosts attached to them. They also were not sure whether or not they blew out Riley's candle when he was acting out while possessed, which can explain why the ghosts that latched on to him had stronger influence. But the resolution to their problem was given by Duckett's brother when he told them that the body will reject the ghosts eventually given time... Which also explains why the ghosts were bent on having Mia kill Riley so much, because that rejection was already happening, as hinted at when Jade told Mia Riley woke up briefly as himself. They wanted to Riley dead ASAP because as stated in the rules "if you die while they are in you, they'll have you forever".... Well guess who died at the end and is now stuck as a spirit on the other end of the handshake game? They didn't get Riley but they got Mia. And her fate makes sense within the logic and rules established by the movie. Which is fucking great because I feel like not enough horror movies bother being consistent with rules they establish.

i think its also fair to notice that both of them were supposed to die at the end, but mia let herself be taken instead of her and riley. so she did technically save him at the end. she would have no reason to let him live if she was full possessed. i think the talk sue gave to mia actually mattered in the end, she was open and honest to her immediately instead of her dad who wasnt. which is left mia in such a vulnerable state. her forgiveness and telling mia that shes family was got through to her

duckett is talking to his dead "pop" as mia is talking to her dead "mum". The mum is telling mia that her dad is not real and that is going to hurt her; "pop" is telling duckett that his brother is not real and is going to hurt a lot of people and has to stab him. the spirt is not her mum's because the spirits you meet via the hand are those of the people who died while possessed and mia's mother wasnt possessed.

The reason why Mia wasn’t talking to her mom, was her mom killed herself from depression, she wasn’t possessed then killedherself so she wouldn’t have gone to the afterlife of the game. She would’ve gone to where everyone else dies. The people that played the game got to talk to people who died also playing the game. And you might say, we’ll how did it start, who was the first person to die from the hand game? And that’s all lore for the sequel to explain if there ever will be one.

How dare you assume what I’ve heard or havent heard! That’s as insufferable as Mia is towards her father who only wanted to connect with the only other person that understands his grief, Mia does the very thing she thinks is being done to her which is ignoring someone else’s pain and only focusing on her own, all while trying to connect with the one person that willingly abandoned her. Her father was likely right in knowing she couldnt handle the truth of the letter. But I must agree, The actress certainly plays a good empty headed and self centered character!

@@JakeOkoa precisely, I agree that everyone handles it differently but grief doesn’t excuse self destructive, rude, and selfish behavior. The story could have just as likely been told through the fathers pov as well, then folks would see how reckless, selfish and disrespectful Mia is. He wanted connection as well, and he was likely right in withholding the letter thinking she couldn’t handle the truth, because understanding that the person who is missed willingly made the choice that led to abandonment is painful.

Talk to Me surprisingly has more active parents than a dumb character in the background trope. Miranda Otto’s Sue was a BAMF while Marcus Johnson’s Max was relagated to being the distant father to a grieving daughter actually have a pivatol role in her spraling downfall. He survived Mia’s attack and will live to regret his decision of not telling her the truth about her mother’s suicide sooner.

@@RizztrainingOrder maybe it doesn't excuse, but it explains. I wouldn't call Mia's behavior selfish though. and sure her dad wants connection but he also withholds the letter and the truth from her which is in fact disconnecting the two. and you could easily call that behavior of the dad selfish too, because maybe he doesn't tell her the truth so he doesn't have to deal with an accusation that he couldn't save his wife from ending her life. probably something that he already blames himself for anyway (even if it's not his fault). and keeping the truth from someone because you think this person couldn't handle the truth might be done with good intentions, but that doesn't mean it's really the best option. know the saying 'the road to hell is paved with good intentions'...

I don’t think the old man spirit was fighting with other spirits to keep Riley. I thought it was quite clear that the spirits in that limbo scene are just predators, possibly loosely working together - esp because if you slow that limbo scene down, you can see the spirits abusing other people, not just Riley. It’s just a completely chaotic pit of suffering. This is also supported by the drowned spirit grouping that old man in with all the other spirits - ‘they’ll split ya!’. Why would she do that if they were a couple? Idk, I think you have to ignore a lot of evidence that’s actually in the film to reframe those spirits as a couple.
