I worked as a teacher for thirty years. I made use of audio recorders for a long time. There were a couple of these recorders in the audiovisual center of the school district. I appreciate this video.

Yay! You're gonna love that Marantz - excellent field recorder that fascinates people. One notable upside is that people who would be wary of having a digital recorder on the table while telling a story seem to actually be eager to tell a story in front of a snazzy-looking tape machine with the transport wheels spinning 'round. It's a subtle psychological thing, but very real in my experience with my PMD.

I bought my PMD221 somewhere around 1995 or '97. I still have it, together with the original receipt. It is truly a wonderful machine; like no other cassette recorder I've ever owned. Sad to say, it lives year around inside of a padded case; occasionally remembered, but rarely used. Digital Daze, you know!

@@TamasPal777 possibly so, but I live in southeast Asia now, so that might be problematic. What part of the world are you in?

Hi Joe-- Great video. I have a Marantz pmd 201. It worked fine for a couple of years until today when it stopped. When I push play, the cassette in moving but there is no sound. In your video you dissembled the unit and sprayed with electronic anti corrosion, and then it worked. I think I will try that. Thanks. Jack

I picked one of these up in perfect condition for 120 bucks, lots of hum though, which is precisely the reason i got it.

These are excellent machines. I own a vintage PMD430 that was tuned up by Superscope two years ago. I also was able to buy a NOS PMD420 at the time from them too. The only minor issue I have with the Marantz field recorders is that they lack the solid feel of their Sony counterparts. When you push the buttons on a Sony, you get the same wonderful machine feel when firing an analog Hasselblad or closing a Mercedes-Benz door. This is more than offset, however, by the fact that you can still get factory service on the Marantz recorders. They sell parts too. www.superscopetechnologies.com/t-portable-tuneups.aspx

Thanks a bunch for the link, it's good to know this machine is still being supported.

What's also cool is that there's a direct connection between Marantz, Superscope and Howard Hughes' efforts to circumvent licensing fees for CinemaScope. www.widescreenmuseum.com/widescreen/wingss1.htm

Just got one that is in cosmetic great condition but has a noise when playing back. When touching the mic in, line in or even the strap holder the noise reduces a lot but not totally. Any idea of what it might be and how to repair it?

Congratulations on this lovely machine. When I started watching I was all like " clean the Record/ Playback Switch " 😂 Sorry couldn't help as I serviced a lot of those Tapedecks back in those years... Those were the days ! Thanks for the video, I really enjoyed watching!

Do you think this would be a good option for recording music? I was wanting to make some self released tapes and make the covers myself.

Any decent music software can output better quality files than what a compact cassette can record. However, there are some people who purposefully like the aesthetic that small-format analog tape provides, especially in the context of self-published and distributed tapes. I recently purchased an album from Hainbach, the German electronic musician, released on micro-cassette. And I love it. But it isn't high-fidelity.

Joe Van Cleave yeah I’m not worried about the fidelity as much for certain projects. I just love physical music. I have a big vinyl collection and I have a good amount of tapes and there’s just something amazing about it all. I wanted to put out a ambient project I finished. It has a lot of lo-fi samples in it so it’s kind-of already a lo-fi sound. A Noise artist called Prurient influences me with cassettes because he has self released so manny on his own and normally makes the packaging and it’s really unique. It just has a raw authentic vibe.

Hi Joe, are you into shortwave radios?
@Joe_VanCleave

I have a Radio Shack and Grundig little portable digital shortwave receivers, don't listen to them that often, sadly. There were some interesting english language broadcasts out of Taiwan and Japan that were fun. Also out of Germany. Used to have a vacuum tube Hallicrafters receiver, not bad but newer digital tuners are better. What I really need is a better antenna, like a longwire.

Joe Van Cleave I listen sometimes, but the major broadcasters now are Cuba and China. They are not that fun to listen!

As I mentioned before, I have a PMD-221 as well in my collection and its a lovely machine... Sounds like you did a fantastic job bringing it back to working order. I’ve fixed a LOT of tape recorders with a new belt or two and a spritz of contact cleaner in the right spots. :)
