Then probably the guy will be cool about it, because this isn’t a law, it’s just a different point of view this culture has on these sorts of things. People are not a monolith, if you talk to them, they’re willing to accommodate, but you also need to be realistic about what it is they need or want, so that they’ll meet you half way. In this case, good money to waste their time taking you a short distance. Because most people could just walk the short distance but if you have an issue like you have heels and no shoes or you’re really old or you are pregnant. No South Korean man is just going to yell at you to go walk.

Same in Germany, they will tell you to walk. Not just from a health perspective for you, but also because they would lose their place in the queue and miss out on customers that are actually bringing them in more earnings. So it's both for health and also income considerations

That's also a thing here in France. I've called taxis for customer before and some would just say "no sorry, that's not worth it." And it makes sense tbh.

If I’m calling for a cab, I’d rather pay a bit more than walk. I hurt. A lot. Walking can be actively dangerous for me in some conditions. When it’s too hot I pass out because I can’t regulate my own temperature. I have a false knee, and an auto immune disorder that attacks my nerves and tendons. All of these are invisible disabilities that I don’t want to have to divulge to get a ride.

This is true in Japan, too, but in my experience if you explain why you need the taxi, they'll probably take you. i.e if you're wearing heels and your feet are so sore, or have a medical issue. You can actually make them feel TERRIBLE for being nosey by being "so sorry but actually I have a disability and it would help me so much if you could take me..." but you have to show that you're a bit embarrassed about sharing the details. Once an old guy in the hospital was telling me it wasn't women's day to sign up for showers (you can only shower every other day, so gross). I said it was fine and I had permission (I did) but he was insisting so I let him have it. "I'm sorry, it's so embarrassing to talk about, but I'm having a miscarriage, that's why I'm here, so I need to wash the blood away carefully... to avoid mistakes I'm taking the last time slot, so I won't interfere..." He was mortified, because people don't talk about such things in Japan, and he realised that he forced me to. It was maybe a bit cruel of me, but I was genuinely grieving (of course) and not in the mood to do a more polite version. I don't know if it would also work in Korea, but I'd like to think that if you're in genuine distress or somehow can't walk, that they'd take you if you explain it.

I got mixed feelings about this. As a European I generally do walk everywhere I can, however I also have RA and sometimes my legs swell up which isn't obvious by looking at me but makes walking tricky at which point I likely would need to take a taxi

That isn't particularly considerate of those with disabilities or other situations where walking wasn't really an option. It is incredibly ignorant and arrogant to try to make that decision for someone else. It is especially odd when you are talking to tourists who most likely don't feel comfortable navigating the streets for whatever reason.

This is some of the most entitled shit I’ve heard in a long time. Obviously people won’t say that to you, if you have a clear disability. Be mindful of these people’s time too, it’s a business, not a friendly service. Edit: Maybe don’t visit countries you’re afraid to walk the streets in. This is South Korea you’re talking about, you most likely come from the U.S, where we have like 5x as much crime. Even in countries where it is dangerous, go kick rocks. Leave them. Don’t visit them, your dirty money doesn’t give you the right to treat community members like your staff. Make it worth their while or expect to be treated like someone who’s wasting their time. In other countries, money is just paper to buy shit with. No one is going to treat you like you’re important. This is how it SHOULD be.

@@triplea2072No, sorry, but you’re wrong on this one. This isn’t just a Korea thing; this is a rest of the world thing. I’ve seen this in South America too. If you want to pay me 5 dollars to drive you like 2 blocks, kick rocks, go walk. Your money doesn’t give you control or power over me. they’re the business owner, not some servicemen waiting on you. Learn the difference. You’re the one with a massive lack of respect in this situation.

@@pwnwin I’m not in a wheelchair. I don’t “look disabled”. I still need accommodations anyway. How about you actually look past your own nose and learn at least enough to know invisible disabilities exist. Telling me to get off twitter. I literally don’t have any social media. I just respect myself too much. Too, if I want to take a cab, I want to take a cab. There’s a reason. Maybe I’ve been walking all day, and even a few blocks more would be too much. Maybe I’m just super tired and can’t navigate well, not that I can fully alert anyway. You don’t know why I want a cab. The cabbie doesn’t know why I might need a fan instead of an actor.

That's just dumb... Just take their money or just clarify that it's actually a short distance if they want to walk... If they don't, just drive. I don't know every customers situation, but they may have been walking or doing things for awhile and felt tired to walk, so they call a cab, or maybe have other reasons... Better to just drive and take the money.

Ubers do the dame thing in the States. They'll see that your fare is only $5, going only several miles, and they'll just decline your fare. You just stay perpetually "searching for a new driver." It doesn't really make sense for a taxi driver to do that, though. That's some real FOMO shit right there. Either way, you should probably just walk in Korea.
@sangkang679

How is that racist?
@sarahberlaud4285
3 ай бұрын
It's not. It's that if a taxi won't take you (a foreigner) sometimes people think, incorrectly, that it's racism. In other circumstances it definitely can be to do with nationality or race, but likely if you're going only a short distance, it's just standard practice to refuse you. They also wouldn't accept a Korean.

It’s communication. The cab driver can say, “Welcome to Korea. I don’t want to unnecessary take your money when you can save that by walking, e.g. one mile to your destination. But if you insist that you want to be driven there, I just want to let you know in advance “.
