I wonder why the writers of the movie never wondered that if Skynet was a so much intelligent AI and thought every detail of the era while sending the Terminator back in time, then they should know when to stop in order to mess up with it's mission, i mean, they shoulda had thought that by killing the gun shop owner, might cause some interference on it's mission somehow, regardless on wether how you need to acquire guns legally or non-legally. That gun shop owner was an unnecessary casualty, but if for Skynet, "the end justifies the means", then it's a good way of covering the huge plot hole.

Reminder: the Terminator had been sent back with very little knowledge of what life was like back in 1984. Reese says the records were lost after the war. The only thing it knew was Sarah lived in LA in 1984, but nothing else. It asks for a plasma rifle to see if the technology even existed back then, to which the gun store owner thinks it is just being a smart ass. This is further explored when after the T-800 finds Sarah at Tech Noir and chases her and Reese, it chooses to flee the scene when the police arrive since it's damaged and isn't sure what the police are armed with, even though they don't have the weapons capable of hurting it. Later on once it's flesh casing starts to rot, and it's time table is shrinking to kill Sarah, it mounts the offensive on the police station since by that point it's confident in it's superiority in combat with people armed only with then-modern weaponry.

The ".45 Longslide" that the Terminator acquires in the gun store is an AMT Hardballer Longslide with a primitive laserlock sight (a one-off made by Ed Reynolds from the company Laser Products Corporation). In 1984, laser sights were rare, and required a high level of power. This helium-neon laser needed 10,000 volts to turn on, and a further 1,000 volts to maintain its brightness. The cables were run up Arnold's arm to a battery that was in his M65 field jacket. The laser was activated by his other hand.

My understanding of the reasoning (as a non-gun-owning non-US person) is that handguns are concealable whereas “long guns” (rifles, shotguns, etc) are not. Accordingly, there’s a waiting period and higher check since they’re easy to carry without drawing attention/concern. Handguns are heavily restricted in my home of Canada for similar reasons (basically only police and some high level security guards are allowed to carry them, and even then only while on the job).

More people are killed each year by Handguns not rifles.
@HTacianas
2 жыл бұрын
@@casey6556 Yes, that's pretty much correct. In the US there's a lot of restrictions regarding weapons that are considered easier to conceal, meanwhile those with full stocks and longer barrels are seen more as hunting equipment and less practical for nefarious purposes. That's why rifles with a less than 16" barrel are illegal, as it makes them easier to hide while maintaining most of the firepower. A strange thing is that a rifle without a stock is generally considered to be a pistol, however, and thus is not regulated in the same manner. Additionally, attaching a stock to a pistol legally makes it a short barrelled rifle, even though it technically makes it less concealable.

What I find so great and so scary him shooting him is the one liner. ''wrong'' usually in movies, there's an epic one liner, then a slight pause, a pause to allow the audience to hear it, and for the victim to get a kind of fearful reaction. There is a subtle care that is placed on the emotion of the victim. In this case though, the terminator isn't a prideful being, he doesn't care about this shopkeeper or his emotions, he just factually states that his premise is false and shoots him with absolutely no care for the man at all. It's fucking creepy and shows how... inhuman this creature is. It doesn't have the typical human sin of pride or sadism, it just kills. That's all it does.

I love how the T-800 CSM-101 Terminator has detailed files on all known Human weapons but didn't realize that Phased Plasma Rifles didn't exist yet. The Terminator might not actually know that much beyond what a simple Humanoid Hunter Killer knows as Skynet had to quickly select a random Terminator, issue it orders, then send it back in time before Tech-Com smashed it's defense grid. It knows the weapons but not their introduction dates as such information was unnecessary. Plus as most records were lost in Judgement Day, Skynet itself might not even know. It's knowledge was extremely limited to what it had access to as a Defense Network Computer. It didn't even know basic Human anatomy until it started experimenting on captured prisoners in research facilities. Aside from basic prototype schematics of the T-70 Terminator and maybe a few rudimentary designs for Hunter Killers. Skynet had to learn it all from scratch.

Plasma rifle will melt through the gun barrel as it traverse through it. Not to mention to generate the plasma will require a mini fusion chamber of sort. If not, the magnetic confinement will require the gun to be larger than a small VW. Let say in future the fusion reactor is small enough to be built in to a rifle. The magnetic coil require to discharge will be heavier than a jack hammer. Only a terminator could lift it and use it like a rifle. Not very practical for an average joe.
