The main thing with it is that a big chunk of the issues with it are due to them being part of the way through the episodes all but complete and trying to tell the story of the rest with what they had left. There were also sections that were pretty far along that got scrapped to at least have a semi-viable finale to it. Clear was going to play a larger role in the story, and Omega was supposed to be revealed as, essentially, a countermeasure for Chaos. Part of the story would have moved up the confrontation with the Earl earlier, which would be followed by ending up back on Earth which is where Lisa was supposed to earn the Kigan dragon she uses later on and most of the events of After would have happened and Chaos still plotting and arriving on Earth which would then trigger things with Makenshi revealing his motives (he was trying to position himself and get strong enough to assassinate Chaos, and would have stolen the Ocean Puzzle which would be used to remix all of the destroyed worlds as a delaying/equalizing tactic so that if they could get through it, they could destroy Chaos and restore the worlds the Earl had destroyed. Madoushi would have played a larger role after that and be revealed as the one who killed Aura [The girl Kaze keeps dreaming about and Makenshi would also have as she was Kaze's sister and had been betrothed to Makenshi as part of a peace treaty...that Madoushi was against and assassinated her after willingly turning to serve Chaos and unleashed him on the worlds of their people while making it look like Makenshi was the one that betrayed them and got Aura killed, which was why Kaze was so focused on going after him). Another thing was that Kaze and Makenshi's first major battle (The one intended to be the opening) is also when Clear was "created" and Omega was shattered The Earth->Wonderland->Earth->Puzzle thing was something they were inspired directly by Digimon Adventure with...the first section largely being to have several other worlds pop up that would show up again later involving other things There were a LOT of things that had been planned for the full, original runtime...which then got butchered as they had to remove a lot of things from the earlier ones while both having fewer episodes to finish things off unless they got a last minute reprieve (which they didn't get) while also hammering in a massive pile of more exposition dumps... All in all, I actually still enjoyed the series and own a copy despite it's myriad of flaws in final execution...and I would have loved the original plans for the series

0:25 -- "You had to go out to a physical store and buy a physical copy..." Not true at all. Like many early 2000s anime, Fall 2001's Final Fantasy Unlimited was fansubbed and distributed digitally online, probably via IRC fileservers, LimeWire/Kazaa, or the occasional XDCC bot. I have them from a torrent uploaded several years later -- DivX3, 512x384, ~140-160MB per episode. (DVD-rips also came out as the ADV DVDs were released.) Though the release delays from the group Soldats ranged from 6 days after the first episode to 5 months after the last episode, which was well in line with standard fansubbing speed in that era. Those who desire the downfall of legal streaming sites and a return to the Age of Fansubbing should be careful what they wish for. 8:37 -- From what I can find on ANN, ADV didn't announce the license until April 2003, well after FF:U finished airing. So they and the viewers who saw the fansubs or heard about it from those who did would've known what they were getting. For the English dub, ADV sent the work to their secondary "Monster Island" studio in Austin, who produced wildly uneven and mediocre dubs for numerous wildly uneven and mediocre shows back in the day, including Happy Lesson, Eden's Bowy, Moeyo Ken, Magical Play, Wedding Peach, Petite Princess Yucie, and Cosplay Complex. (As well as a few well-regarded classics like the Rurouni Kenshin Movie/OVAs and Nadia: Secret of Blue Water.) So it's no surprise that the dubbing is grating or inconsistent in a lot of places.

To be fair, the summoning gun gimmick is pretty key to why this anime was supposed to work as a Final Fantasy property. The summons are the most plot-significant recurring FF element in the anime, and summoning summons from across the series is supposed to mimic the things that make those games cool. And of course, the Pokemon angle; "Play the game and you can summon these monsters yourself!" To be fairer, that's kind of a silly reason to structure your show's method of plot resolution around some guy following the protagonist around and occasionally shooting his monster-summoning gun.

@@egbertmilton4003 For me the coolness was his potential. I mean, canned animation happens. Sometimes that's the style. Look at Super Sentai; Gokaiger was amazing and still had canned attack sequences. But again, back to the potential. The attack sequence was not initiated by "Soil is my power." It was started with a heartbeat and Kaze's "It has moved." My theory was always that the black heart in the Magun was Kaze's own heart. His stoicism was why the gun was always "on cool down." The situation had to be desperate enough to stir his emotions, which I also assumed were stunted because he went put his ding-dang heart in a gun. And no that doesn't make sense but it's pretty cool. I think it's like live action: is this bad because of the actor or the director or the writer? I don't think it's Kaze's fault. Conceptually, he's got a lot going for him. He just landed in a bad production. Don't get me wrong--FF:U is a hot mess! I don't love him ironically; I don't love him unironically. I just do.

16:18 I kind of love the trope of the self-conscious weird child whose weirdness is actually rad as fuck, as well as its slightly more fraught adult romantic counterpart the "but your horns are beautiful!" cliché, partly because when executed decently they can reflect actual human experiences through a fantastical metaphoric lens in a charming way, but also because when they're handled particularly bluntly or simplistically it can be *extremely* funny.

Honestly I'm only mad that Final Fantasy seems to have ditched turn based combat entirely, which is what the core of the series is, and becoming a fully action series. FFXVI is more DMC than FF and that's not really okay. Final Fantasy 1-12 we're all fine and all fit within the mold, as even FF11 and FF12 still had that final fantasy "feel" even if the combat was in real time for those. FFXIII was an interesting deviation but it really should have been its own IP, especially when it got 4 games under the FFXIII brand completely different from the rest of the series. FFXIV ARR just blatantly copied and improved upon WoW for gameplay but the story and world is 100% final fantasy, so that was a mixed bag. And FFXV was a disaster with 1000+ spinoffs most of which are now lost media with an absolute mess of a game in both gameplay and story that was NOTHING like final fantasy taking place in an urban fantasy setting with cars and gas stations and roads and modern cities and crap. Not to mention the terrible Chinese mobile shovelware-esque gameplay where you just hold down a button and watch big numbers pop up. The game was over 500 GB yet was completely soulless with an incomplete story and terrible open world. Easily the worst game in the series. And then FF0 and FFXVI go full dark souls/DMC action game? This is NOT final fantasy, even more than the FNC saga on PS3.

I remember this series. I watched it once. And yet one episode has always stuck in my mind. The episode where the Earl's Fungus minion learns that a part of his home had survived. So he goes to restore and protect that land. Of course, our heroes arrive and Kaze fights him, only it doesn't work as his regenerative abilities are too strong. In the end, the Fungus minion discovers black mold (if memory serves) that destroyed his home before. And then Kaze hits him again killing him (only possible now because of the mold ruining his regenerative abilities) and destroying what remained of his home. It then cuts to the Earl enjoying his "meal". I think part of why I remember the episode is because the Fungus guy was revealed to have never truly been a bad person. Just unknowingly working for the person who had destroyed his home. Only to then have it all destroyed by our protagonists. It was an oddly sympathetic story in this series. It was also one of the only times Kaze had to use his gun twice. Otherwise, you are 100% correct. The rest is basically "whacky hijinks", then Kaze using his MaGun to kill whatever villain of the week is here. In the end, the series feels really rushed, too. Honestly, feels like there could have been something interesting if they workshopped it a little more and focused on a cohesive longform story rather than a monster of the week format.

tto add to this based o my own memory: the earl's minions were the ones who delierately threw the mold in there because the plan all along was to eat Fungus and feed on his despair, showing jsut how little the big bad cared about his own followers and only wanted to eat.

It sucks because I believed that the setting had a lot of potential, thought character designs and OST were neat, and teenaged me really thought the descriptions of Kaze's Soil Bullets were always pretty metal. The problem was ...the rest of it. I think if Square was Less ambitious and committed to a solid 26 episodes from the jump, then maybe the series would be a lot better. If nothing else, it would have forced them to pare down their ideas (IE, focusing on a couple of major power sources as opposed to the eight or nine they loaded into this) and maybe the animation wouldn't have had to have cut so many corners and there'd be some actual plot progression. Sadly, the FF franchise has always had this reputation of being Huge and Epic, so I can't help but feel like this was doomed from the start.

This show had no right to go as hard as it did.

Another reason why spirits within sucks lol

This feels like one of those comments from someone who hasn't actually watched this since it was new and is basically riding high off vague childhood nostalgia awoken by the summaries in the video.

@@Necrofitz not true. We know it’s bad, but it’s worse cause the reason it’s bad is cause we lost a lot of the story we were supposed to get. And the only way to get the story at least at the time and even now is to learn Japanese or fan translations. Also it was dubbed by ADV. This anime had to fight an uphill battle.

... This video unlocked *primal memories* for me and I kinda hate it I watched this growing up, but I had completely forgot it until I saw Kaze's canned animation with the gun thingie, and I suddenly remembered drawing *fanart* for this thing. Because as a teenager I had no taste. I don't know whether to thank you or curse you for unlocking these thoughts

I think it'd be really funny if Unlimited got a reference in an official game. Maybe have a chocobo named Chobi or something small like that.

This was my first ever anime, i watched it as a small child. And even though it's bad, it holds a really special place in my heart. Thank you for at least bringing attention to it! I hope Square Enix makes a reboot of it at least. It had potential to be great.

Good on you for sticking with it! I would hate anime if this was my first one.

I had the exact same experience with it. That one "working" tune is still stuck in my head to this day.

@@the_exegetemy 1st anime was probably Majokko Megu-chan which my sister absolutely adored. While very very old it still holds a very special place in my heart, because I watched it with my sister (and thats it 😂). When we are kids things often look better than they really are. A lot of people stop watching anime as they get older, others just carry on for decades, but that very 1st anime often stays close to the heart be it bad or good. Hat off for the OP for sticking with their 1st anime show. 🎩

I got a real nostalgia kick seeing this be covered even though the thumbnail was going to crack down on how repetitive and aimless the plot was. I still hold in in fond regard all those years back and glad still Jeff informed on it.

Rude! The Magun sequences are the best part of each episode! Read into that regarding the episode quality however you want.

As someone who had watched the series like 15 years ago, I can concur. It was basically why I had managed to finish it.

This was so nostalgic! I used to watch that as a lil kid in Japan! It was formulaic as hell, but it looked cool as hell and I was young enough to buy into its cool factor
