@@flightlesslord2688 size is everything, the dominant land animals are always the heaviest. Therapsid land predators (including mammal) cap out at around the same weight, bears have been the ones pushing the limit with arctotherium, birds never got anywhere close to its size and strength thus why they were out competed by mammals when the Americas collided. With that said, the long gone super theropods were on another level, mammals and birds both lived along side them for a whopping 90 million years and they could not compete. Not 1 megafauna (100lbs or more) for mammals evolved for 90 million years.

It's true, most birds are at least omnivorous. Things like parrots or pigeons or the various seed eating song birds which primarily eat fruit and such often also might eat insects, even ostriches will eat bugs. It might come from them being descendants of a carnivorous lineage. But either I suspect Gastornis was pretty much fully omnivorous.

@Dragrath1

@@flightlesslord2688 All birds that I know primarily feed insects to their babies even if their diet as adults is primary plant based. It is also suggested that small theropods may have been more omnivorous eating fruit and seeds in addition to meat as available. After all as Devin Stomgren points out there really is no such thing as a pure herbivore/carnivore. Gators will eat fruit, american robins will eat frogs, deer will eat birds etc. Dentition in modern animals has been found to really only correlate to the most challenging food an animal regularly goes after rather than its main diet and since meat fruit and seeds are far easier to digest than plant fibers few animals will turn them down as food.

In 1972 while collecting for the University of Wyoming I walked to the top of a hill outside camp to admire the view, and at the very peak found the huge tarsometatarsus of a Diatryma (as we called it then) perfectly intact and totally isolated. Very strange and unforgettable experience.

@jeffreyschweitzer8289

ABC 123 Thanks for asking. Not at that location. Most likely there had once been more of the fossil there; generally when fossil bones weather out of the badlands shale they break and fall downslope. Sometimes you can trace the fragments to where they are emerging and find more intact material by digging there. But when it’s a single bone at the crest of the hill, that’s all that there is. Diatryma (Gastornis) fossils were not particularly rare in the Eocene of Wyoming, but this was weird, finding a single giant bird bone all by itself like that, on top of the hill and not at the bottom. That’s why I remember it so clearly after all these years.

Cassararie's they should scientifically bring back the terror bird and use the DNA of the cassararies as a building point. This would be one bad ass bird.

I know a lot of people nowadays seem to think gastornis was a herbivore, and while I do sort of agree with that, I think it might have been an omnivore. I mean just because a bird doesn’t have a hooked beak doesn’t mean they never eat meat. I mean look at chickens. They have no hook on the bill yet will still hunt down small snakes, lizards and rodents when the opportunity presents itself.

Wow I never knew that the Gastornis genus evolved independently from the phorusracids, and I always thought they were carnivorous too. I learned so much from this video, very well done. Also when is the next wwd accuracy video coming out? I’m really enjoying that series!

I was always fascinated by this bird ever since I saw it in "Walking With Beasts." It's even more intriguing learning about its herbivorous diet for the past couple of years Also, if you're calling it the Terror Duck, would it flap in the night?

I think the idea dinosaurs disappeared 66 million years ago will not survive for much longer. These things are obviously 'dinosaurs'. There's still a lot of cognitive dissonance stopping people from fully understanding the implications of the 'birds are dinosaurs' issue.

I figure these big birds were like chickens, which feed on whatever tasty morsels they encounter or dig up. Bird behavior hasn't really changed that much. So large insects, worms, small reptiles and mammals, weeds and seeds/nuts, berries and fruits are all on the menu for the terror chickens.
