I can’t agree at all. Let’s say he is yelling in English, or, all the Americans understand Norwegian…no one, except the audience (because they know they are watching a horror movie), is going to believe a deranged looking guy that has been shooting at, and throwing grenades at what everyone can clearly see is a dog. And it won’t go better when he starts yelling it’s “some kind of alien.” Most Europeans speak at least some English. As do pilots. Had they been able to keep their composure, and tell the Americans the dog is rabid, or is carrying some type of uber infectious disease that is deadly to humans, I think they would have had a better chance to communicate the issue.

They can actually be interacted with. They actually interact with the scene and the actors. They naturally sell themselves as an actual thing in the room with the actor, with ease. This is why total CG often fails in the modern day: unless you spend a SHITTON of money on the digital effects, and I mean a SHITTON, and a massive shitton of time adding every. Single. Tiny. Little. Detail... Oftentimes more than you would to just do it practically, you get something that DISTRACTINGLY clearly doesn't exist. If you want an idea of how to do CGI well, rewind back to 1993 and the movie Jurassic Park, whose careful use of extremely meticulous CGI for long shots combined with carefully planned practical effects to prove interaction and physical presence and exclusively practical effects for close shots and actor interactions basically set the BAR for how to sell CGI effects believably.

Small correction, the 2010 one isn't a remake ;) It's a prequel, though that's all I'll say as you'll have to see how it connects to the story Sad part is that while it's a good movie in terms of atmosphere and tension, the studio forced them to use CGI (despite having full animatronics/puppets etc.) so a lot of the effects look VERY dated nowadays (especially considering how well the 1982 version holds up) Still a good watch, but definitely have those expectations tempered for the creature effects, it's a sad sad story, especially since the director/creature studio really pushed for the use of actual props but were forced to change it late in production

Interesting Facts: Norris (the guy who’s chest bursts open, chopping off the doctor’s hands with its bear-trap teeth) had a bad heart, and when the Thing took him over and perfectly imitated him, it also faithfully recreated his heart defect, which eventually caused Norris to suffer a heart attack for real during a high-stress moment. The Thing would have been happy to hide itself in a presumably “dead” body, but it couldn’t tolerate the electro-shocks from the defibrillator and was thus forced to reveal itself. Of course, the disturbing scene where Norris’ head separates from his burning body, slides onto the floor, and pulls itself away, transforming into a crab/spider with his upside-down head as its body, and tries to crawl away unnoticed, is an iconic moment!

For instance, it suggests CHILDS was infected in the end and points out WHEN and WHAT suggested how. Also the whole thing with the keys? It is obvious when you see it. In the scene before, at around the 21:00 mark, you see Windows and Bennings in the room. Windows mentions "the keys" and Bennings telling him to get them from Gary. Then afterwards (you don't hear\see it on YOUR cut version) when Windows return and runs out you hear something loud fall. This is Windows DROPPING THE KEYS. It was made purposely loud so you'd hear it. This means whoever the Thing was at the time (Palmer) just had to pick them up after he left the room and use them. The outside scene where they found Bennings\Thing, you'll notice if you watch closely, SOMEONE was late, Palmer.

That made him the perfect target for it. That also means Childs was not the Thing at the end, because he was alone with MacReady, who was exhausted and unarmed, yet Childs did not grow tentacles and attack him, even though it had no reason not to. It also makes it really frustrating that they just *_kept splitting up constantly throughout the entire movie._*

That original was set in Alaska. It was based off a 1938 novella "Who Goes There" which had the thing as more a plant based organism that they adapted to an alien in later movie. The 2011 movie of same name was a prequel, not a remake. It was a prequel by a few hours anyway as it details events in the Norwegian camp. Much inferior movie with inferior FX as they used CGI, but it's a good watch for the back story. John Carpenter has said that he'd be up for a sequel due to the resurgence of popularity of the movie, but how would you do a sequel 40 years later?

So glad you finally watched this. It's my all time favorite horror film. It just leaves you unsettled after watching it the first time. The Thing (2011) isn't a remake but a prequel set in the Norwegian camp. While the CGI effects aren't nearly as good as the practical stuff in this and it retreads a lot of the same story beats, it's well acted and a worthwhile watch in my opinion.

Some of the mysteries of the plot can be answered by the notion that some of the assimilated copies are not aware they are one of the things instead of human. This an element taken from the original novella it is adapted from. Some of the copies are so throughly perfect the very creature fully believes he's a human. It's only on a super-stressful state of survival that its nature erupts in a case of flight-or-fight survival reaction which are primordial in instinct instead of a rational choice. I think the two characters that embodied that notion are Palmer and especially Norris whose copy is so faithful it even reproduced his weak heart condition. Some of the other copies are full sentient if their nature and are very manipulative of others to seed distrist so to make the others overlook him, like Blair being the prime example. And i think Fuchs was the only one who even as a copy his haminity still came through he decided to kill himself as sacrifice to save the others. It might look like it but the movie is very thoughful in its storytelling

15:09 I read somewhere that the background for Mac's character was discussed between Carpenter and Russell, and he was basically a haunted Vietnam vet - hence the drinking - but they couldn't really think of a natural way to fit that into the movie, so it never went beyond being a discussion. If that's true, then your observation here is pretty on-the-nose. Good reaction! The original short story by John Campbell is called 'Who Goes There?' or you can get the longer original manuscript called 'Frozen Hell.' Carpenter adapted it pretty faithfully, but there are some key differences. One of the best horror movies ever made, 100%.

There's a theory going around that Macready was the very second person who got infected. Depending on your interpretation, during the scene where the dog is licking the guy's face, Macready runs over, gives his bottle to which that guy takes a swig and Macready is seen drinking from it again later. So, within the context of the movie, there was equal chance that either Macready or Childes were the Thing, but the connected sequel media made their choices.

There's always a lot of debate over when/how Blair was infected, but Carpenter has personally shot some of the theories down, stating that he was not infected at the time he destroyed the helicopter and the radio equipment, and that he was not infected by the particles when he touched the pencil to his lips. Given that, then Thing Palmer likely got to him at some point when he was out in the shed, turned him, and then went back to the base, leaving Thing Blair to start making the ship for the both of them. Thing Norris is a bit more of a question, as there is some debate over whether or not he was even aware he was a Thing and was actively participating in events (and possibly was the one who took Blair), or whether he was infected, but hadn't been fully turned, until the crisis of having a heart attack forced the Thing to reveal itself. There are no set answers to any of these questions, of course, but they're a lot of fun to debate :).

I’ve always wondered why the thing never reacted to being cut moments before the blood test. Think about it, when attacked it defends itself, it tries to escape. The hot wire causes it to expose itself but the scalpel used to make the cut to draw the blood does nothing.

To answer your question on how they made "the thing" title, it's actually pretty fun fact. They took a fish bowl with water in it and used lights with a black drop and a cutout of "the thing" words with that exact text. It's really cheap, but very effective, and that's the art that a lot of movies these days that are high budget have lost. Their ingenuity to save money on a small budget. ps. uncle Owen? XD I like your style son. To answer your question about how it was smart enough to get to the blood, The thing got to the blood while Blair was having a meltdown. Most likely it was Palmer considering he was the only one not present trying to take down Blair destroying the communications. Also to answer your question about why this alien is so intelligent on how to sabotage the humans, it's because it had a trial and error situation on first contact with the crazy sweds.. aka Norwegians.

Great reaction, and it really is a great movie! Hard to believe it was so panned on release. Even after it stopped scaring me on rewatches, it's still excellent as a psychological thriller. You really feel it when the paranoia start to tear the group apart, because there's nothing they could have done differently. My favourite detail is that noose in Blair's cabin. At some point he was planning on using it, but by the time Mac comes to see him and he's asking to be let back inside, it's not Blair anymore.

A great reaction, I'll be watching more of your reactions. You really thought about the plot logically. When I first watch this, I first thought that either the Norwegians shooting at the dog was either bored and wanted to hunt something, or that the dog was infectious. The location does have a desolate beauty to it. Most comments will tell about who is a thing or behind the scenes trivia, I just want to state that the Chess Wizard did cheat at the beginning. When it cuts to McCready's turn, it moved 2 pieces.
