The reason i'm very sceptic against e-bike(er)s is that in my area there is one trail which is pretty long and some more trails in the area connecting to different villages. The trails aren't bike-only trails. They all are footpaths and are used by mtb'ers and hikers. before there were maybe a handful of guys who pushed DH-Bikes up there and rode down in kneepads and full face helmet. Now there are more and more people starting to ride there in full gear, riding along the connecting trails with definitely higher speeds than any regular mountainbiker would have along those trails. And often it's those type of guys who do that which don't even consider going aside if someone comes from the other direction. Also if i pedal up and an e-biker overtakes at the worst possible spot and doesn't even say high it's annoys me. So basically the problem aren't really the bikes but the people who made a bad name for all mountainbikers previous and now switched to e-bikes and make a bad name for e-bikes. But i guess most of those guys don't get it, self-reflection is probably something that must be learnt. (Just also want to say that i'm probably not good at self-reflecting either, but atleast i say hi and thank if someone makes some space so i can go through.)

I think its reasonable to charge a annual fee to register class 1 ebikes. That $ goes directly into trails. However, an independent study showed that ebikes do not impact trail anymore than regular bikes. Sure ebikers might ride more, but should we limit the amount of vert that a strong rider or pro can do since its a lot more than a regular person also?

Agree, focus should be more about rider education on how to ride trails on any bike. Sorry to say but the volume of riders on all bike types is only going to increase for a lot of reasons. Best we ensure we educate now. Many sports require a level of education before and during playing the sport. Anyone can buy or borrow a mtb and hit the trails with zero education on trail etiquette or technique.

Awesome video. I am a massive advocate for eBikes. An eBike got me back into biking after 10 years off the saddle. I have peripheral neuropathy (weakness, numbness, and tingling in my lower extremities), and I'm not strong enough to enjoy a regular pedal bike. My eBike allows me to ride with friends. I still sweat and grind on the climbs, and work for the descents. An eBike is undoubtedly not for lazy people. They are suitable for all riders of different skill levels. I wouldn't be riding a bike as much if I didn't own an eBike. It sucks that they are so expensive and heavy, though. I'm not a muscular guy, and the weight of my bike bothers me. I don't think my eBike is chewing up the trails. I'm not an aggressive rider. Your riding is flawless, and the videos are wickedly awesome. Cheers.

Thanks Remi, excellent as usual. I put about 1400 km on a YT Decoy Shred this past season and I'm converted! For people who like to go fast and test their limits, improve their skills and simply get out more and ride longer, the ebike is the way to go. Every ride I cover 50 to 80% more terrain in the same amount of time, and how that ranks me as lazy or cheating I will never understand. THere's a misconception about ebikes brought about by people who really haven't used them. LESS judging more riding...isn't that what it's about? 😁

I got a Kenevo Expert 2020 (monster bike!) and my conclusions are: 1) you definitely ride longer and more 2)great to ride even when your legs are heavy from a regular ride the day before 3) you can ride in endurance mode and have fun! 4) you ride in places and explore new areas where you have never bothered before since it would be too painful to climb...Technique is definitely different as it is much heavier and the weight it distributed differently. Sometimes I don't manage to clear quick small technical climbing challenges unless I am prepared for them as the bike is less nimble and heavier. Only down side: After I got this bike, I didn't ride my regular bike for two months out of excitement. I definitely felt that when I went on a one week enduro ride in Ainsa, Spain....Conclusion : you need to work on your leg muscles more if you ride an ebike more. Overall, fantastic experience much more fun and more riding! What can be bad?

It’s not the age as there are older riders who can ride big rides on clockwork bikes , I’d say it’s about future proofing your knee joints as there is only so much grinding they can take and if an Ebike can take the strain off them its got to be a good thing ,plus I love the fact I’m back at the trail centre eaten and heading back home before a clockwork bike rider finishes, time is money 💰

Great point about injury. I've had severe lower back pain for most of my adult life which stopped me from riding my road bike and over time really reduced my enjoyment of mountain biking when uphill sections would render my back destroyed. I would have to get off all the time and lay on the floor to release the tension and pain. I recently bought an ebike and it has changed my life - I am back out in the woods and enjoying riding again. It's so much fun. For me MTB'ing isn't about fitness (I run for fitness) but its about being outside, enjoying nature and having a blast going downhill. Anyone who thinks they're for lazy people needs to really think about who that rider is before making judgement....they'll all be riding one in 5 years!

I think the biggest concern with emountain bikes is they could make mountain biking too popular which would be bad for trails, but only if networks don't expand sustainably. As far as riding one goes i think they have less impact than a normal bike. Walking is worse for trails than rolling and normal mountain bikers walk more. Shuttles by 4wd are also worse for the environment than self shuttling. As far as on road Ebikes go i seriously think they could change the world for the better by being one of the best ways to help reduce unnecessary single occupant motorists.

I bought a 2021 turbo levo comp 3 months ago after dusting off my vintage hard tail and reentering the MTB world. At 64 and a dirt rider since 1966 it was only after a few miles on the 1999 hard tail to realize that I needed a new MTB and I hit the internet hard researching modern bikes. It was not long when it was clear that to get a decent bike it would cost me at least 3K, from there the 7K of an EMTB felt more like an investment than a horrific amount of cash. The trails I have ridden on my EMTB are beyond what I could have ridden even in my prime. I ride as often as possible and have lost weight and fit into my discarded jeans in just 3 months. I have zero regrets from my investment into an EMTB, best thing I’ve bought in a long time. I plan on saving up for a non- E bike, full suspension 29er to ride when uphill is not an issue. The mountains where my E bike rules is what I go to when I get the time, but local falter trails is what I ride for training from my house, thus the non-EBike.

But it was a real pleasure to climb up to the beginning of the DH trails, you have the possiblité to enjoy the place where you are, which is not possible while riding downhill. Concerning the association, I guess that the Ebikers should help the same way a no motor rider would do... Great vid as usual Rémy, thanks! E-bikes have been super contentious where I live (Canmore). The old school trail crews and locals hate 'em. There is a 'no motor' policy in many parks, and e-bikes initially were slotted in with this. Depending on what park it seems the debate shifts yearly. There is also a huge mindset towards self driven fitness here, so there are a lot of haters about not earning your turns, and I'll admit that this mindset has influenced me as I went from being unable to pedal up 100m to loving a bit 1500m self powered day, and I hated when someone who clearly had not worked on their fitness would catch or tail me on an uptrack. I also wonder if people like this might inadvertently put themselves at risk by accessing trails with false self confidence about abilities that really are rooted in the bike. I have seen the destruction e-bikes wrought on 5620 in Revy. It was brutal. Overweight unskilled riders on heavy bikes smashing into jumps instead of jumping. However my negative mindset shifted when I started recommending these to patients recovering (or left living with) knee/hip injuries. People were happy to keep ripping, and nobody was out trashing trails or being greedy. I really don't think there is a great deal more wear on the trails since they have been introduced (usership numbers being up is a greater concern, especially with people maybe not doing as much volunteer work/capita to maintain trails). I totally agree with your assessment of impact in terms of riding from home and not doing shuttle runs, which can be a big issue with garbage FSR uptracks in many BC locations. Around town I see tonnes of young parents on E-bikes ripping up the hill w their kids in a chariot, and similarly many fat-e-bikes commuting people to work year round. So I gotta say that your vid just supported an acceptance in my mind that had been happening. E-bikes have a role. Due to local trail inhibitions on e-bikes I'll stick with a Me-bike for now, but I do appreciate this technology. This video is great and I will likely be sharing with some of the unknowing critics to demonstrate that these are not some trail destroying dirtbike. Thank you.

I think that E-bikes are definetely a good way to improve your skills or also to get back after an injury or similar. On the other hand the trails I ride are usually quite alpine, technical and not really flowy, because there are almost no bikers riding there and a lot of rocks. In that situations I definetely prefer my light allmountain bike, because the E-bikes are wider (so I need to get of my bike more. But e bikes are improving and getting narower in the future anyways.). Sometimes I also have to carry my bike on the back on the uphills for several hundred meters, which is quite impossible or at least very tiring with an E-mountainbike.( It is alredy enough tiring with a light bike) I also really dont like to see too many E mountainbikes. if you just climbed a mountain after many tiring hours and hope to enjoy the panorama and the calm, a group of 20 Emountainbikers is really the last thing you want to see up there. Nonetheless I think E bike are getting better and better and are also a fun way to improve your skill rapidly.

The problem for me with ebikes is when they're ridden in wet and muddy conditions, ripping up and destroying trails that have been carefully maintained by bikers for decades. Stay off the trails when it's wet and muddy winter conditions, please.

Remy, I'm pleased to see you appreciating ebikes ("eebs", as we call them in the UK). I am in the process of buying a Whyte E-150. Whyte is a British brand which you may not have heard of. They have great, agile but aggressive geometry and a very low centre of gravity which really disguises the extra weight. Super excited. Keep sharing footage of all your favourite riding locations - it's my favourite sort of terrain. :)

Remi, this comment is not directed at you personally, and I really appreciate your videos and learn a lot watching your style and technique. I noticed there are a lot of pro MTBers out there at least softly or tentatively promoting ebikes in the internet... I guess my question is, can a pro rider be critical to a point of wholly dismissing a product their sponsor is putting out? Especially in the context of eMTB, I can’t help but feel the industry is shoving these contraptions down our throats because most MTBers I talk to don’t even consider these things a bike because they have a motor.

I'm 59 and have been riding Mt bikes since the mid 80s I have been on an eMTB for just over 2 years now. It has changed my life. Love them for trail and uphill riding, downhill is pretty much the same as a regular bike. Also, you don't really need to shuttle to local trails. I ride way more than on an acoustic and, have been doing a lot of trail maintenance because carrying a few tools isn't a burden. Hey Remy, did you have to give the Stereo back to Cube?

Great Vid Remy! I also live in Squamish and don't own an ebike but have rented them a couple of times from Corsa as they are so much fun! I do not see how they damage the trails. There is no limit to how much someone can ride whether on an ebike or not, its all up to how much time and energy you have. Someone who trains for a long distance race is technically doing more damage than someone who rides once per week so i don't get that argument as we don't expect our top athletes to pay more or contribute more to the trails. If we are really concerned about the trail damage we only need to look at what our beloved races do to the trails when you factor the training and then race day. Yes money goes back but the trail is still never the same. I think I prefer the chest mount with gimbal but maybe a touch higher if possible so you see a little less bike maybe? Thanks for the vids they're great!

Thank you! I have a gimbal I need to try. The issue is that I would have to ride slower. I'm a smaller rider so my chest smashes a lot on my seat, and that's an issue with the gimbal.

Everyone who hates about ebikes is because they haven't tried one yet. You can have a preference over one or the other, but i can't understand who couldn't like a bike as capable as an ebike. Nowadays they offer you the ability to ride pretty much a dh bike everywhere, up and down anything you find out there. Also going at faster speeds improves your reflexes and the extra weight makes you stronger. And when you ride a normal bike after a time being used to the eb', the normal bike feels as amazingly as it never felt before.

Most dislikers don't dislike e-bikes because they're not capable enough, but because they're _too_ capable (to the point of being a cheat). I personally do dislike two things they're not capable of (yet?): being easily carried up un-rideable sections, and recharging the battery through regenerative braking. IMO a bike should be capable of week-long off-grid adventures.

@@leftaroundabout Superlight e-bikes are the weight of a heavy enduro. you can definitely carry them.. also, cheating only matters if you're racing someone who also doesn't have an ebike.. The same argument could be used against any bike with gears vs a single speed.. it's all relevant. As for the recharging on braking, It's a long way off but the battery technology is pretty insane, the battery will Definity last longer than you... If you want a light one. check out the Levo/Kenevo SL, Obera Rise, Trek Fuel Ex-E, Transition Relay, Forestal Syrion,.. They are all around 35-40 lbs. Where as a full sized e-bike weight around 50+. Avg Enduro is 30. Most of those you can ride without the battery and they come in around 30 lbs.... so you're getting 2 bikes in one!
@leftaroundabout

@@_Jake.From.Statefarm_ no off-the-shelf battery lasts longer than me. If I invest in an e-bike, I want it to be capable of multi-day mountain bikepacking trips over hundreds of kilometres. With regenerative braking that would certainly be possible, even with small battery (it could offer _infinite range_ provided you brake enough on the descents). Without regen it's just silly: most of the precious heavy battery energy is wasted in the brakes sooner or later. And regarding weight, even my carbon enduro bike is borderline too heavy for some of the carrying I do (e.g. today I'll be going up a stair climbing > 300 m). Even if it's just 3 kg extra, that would make the difference between just about ok and outright painful. (Vice versa, my hardtail isn't much lighter but much easier to carry.)

Definitely prefere the helmet cam on the trails you ride because they are so varied and beautiful to watch! I really like the chest mount to make a trail riding video more interesting to watch, especially on freeride lines or other ones where the trail itself looks boring. But with all these rocks, roots and the stuff around the trails in Squamish a helmet cam shows much more that you can’t see with a chest mount :) I personally rode an eBike like three times until today and I really liked the fact that you can ride more trails in the same time. But it would never get my first bike, because of the additional weight. Didn’t like it when you’ve got to maneuver quick on tight downhills. But for the cases you explained they’re an awesome invention :)

One aspect of E bikes not covered or mentioned is maintenance, part life cycle and servicing. Perhaps you could later do a long time ride review. I have found some disadvantages compared to a Me-Bike. More electronic parts mean more complexity. Software updates are sometimes a hassle. Things do brake when you crash (my display got smashed on a 5 day road trip on the second day, my ebike was done for as there was no way to control it). The spare part took moths to get delivered and the local service shop had not the right know how yet. Riding is really fun but it adds more complexity in the long haul. Things are simpler on a Me-bike.

In the day I used to go into my local forest just before night fall and get 'lost'. Then when it was dark I would get a compass out and try and find my way home with only a head light to see by. Hi Remy, on my side, I prefer the chest mount when used with a Gimbal (even if the GoPro are a lot better than before with their electronic stabilization, it is not enough). But, with your riding being quite intensive let's say, I think the gimbal would be a pain in the ... (and with the heavy latest GoPros, it is quickly a nightmare to get a good setup). I think the chin mount (camera as low as possible on the helmet) coupled with the HERO 7 / 8 stabilization is very good, and maybe easier for what you do. Both the view angle and the stable footage is good with this.

In my area, many take a bike shuttle to the top of the mountain, and bomb the downhill. Because of all the one way traffic, many trails are worn out. EBikes allow a rider to climb the mountain, which is more sustainable. Riding up also gives the rider more respect for the mountain (not sure why, but it’s true). Ebikers tend to be a little older, and less aggressive in their riding style. We are just glad to be able to hit the trails again!

It seems the real underlining reason why a percentage people hate ebikes is they just can't afford one. The same thing happened back in the day with titanium bikes. There were people who hated on them saying they didn't earn it to own it meaning they didn't put in the time or had the skills to ride a titanium bike. In their eyes you better be a damn good rider if you own a titanium bike. The real fact is they couldn't afford one so they hated on those who could. I think if everyone could afford on or had a chance to ride an ebike they can see what they were really designed for. The obvious reason is they helps those who were injured or trying to get back in shape out there. And the other reason is they it opens the door for real epics rides. It allows you to go farther and explore more. It would be nice to see epic ebike tours. It would get people to learn and appreciate them. There was a story about a man who found out that his grandfather used to ride in the Tour de France. His grandfather had since stopped riding because of his age and health. The man wanted to bring that joy of riding back to him. He bought his grandfather a road ebike. This helped his grandfather get back into riding form and now rides a regular road bike. To be able to bring that joy back to his grandfather is amazing and inspiring.

I personally couldn't care less if someone chooses to ride an e-bike as long as they are still riding within their skill limit, it's certainly possible to be riding way too fast and out of control on any bike. Also, my biggest fear with my busy local trail center is to be charging down a downhill trail and come head-on with an e-biker who's trying to climb up just because they can. Obviously not a problem everywhere such as your more backcountry trails, but at a busy trail center directionality for trails will be important. As far as trail maintentance, not really fair to generalize trail usage by riding discipline I don't think. Just because you have a certain type of bike doesn't mean you do more damage by default, maybe I'm a lycra wearing XC rider who likes to drift every turn in my ENVE socks... who knows
