Commissioned by King's College, Cambridge for the 2000 Nine Lessons and Carols. Dorothy Sayers' text describes the three kings and their gifts in turn; with the young bringing a branch of myrrh, a man in prime bringing incense sad and sweet, and the third, very old, with his hands full of gold. Particularly thrilling is the muscular tempo change which sweeps in the second king, and the glittering fast section in the tonic major, full of ecstatic fervour and praise. The piece unwinds quickly back to the tonic minor as the tale concludes and we return to the gentle lullaby of the start.
