that was a really excellent example of sword fighting... especially the moment when Rochefort step back and raised his head and neck back during d'Artagnan's lung for his neck..... he had their distance apart measured perfectly..... Rochefort was CLEARLY the better swordsman.... d'Artagnan's lunge forward was as far as he could possible reach... Rochefort knew he would be just out of reach... superb..!

Ok to remark just a bit more... this is the Movies and not to be believed for a realistic fight between trained men. A real fight would be All out Fast.. with an unrementing attack by both men with probable cuts and piercing from the distance of the long swords.. And if either manA got past manB's point it would be very likely that manA would skewer manB. And if both men got in close it would be Daggers Punches and grappling like Kung fu masters... Those sword fighters had very good hand to hand combat skills that were effective and deadly. Most probably ending with a grapple were one or both men Mortally stabs the other... Not too many survivers from a death fight when your opponant gets in close. Even if you survive the fight you would likely die from blood loss and infection. Most swordsmen died from cuts on hands and forearms.....

I loved this movie, too! I just don't understand why everyone hates it, and I'm so sad there won't be a sequel because of that. I love the actors (Logan Lerman is one of my favourite actors of all time) and the pace is great, only the finale was a little... not so obvious. I was expecting one more battle scene when I realized the movie was over. But still... great!

I like this movie. Not perfect, but so much fun, and so well cast (especially Freddie Fox as the king - adorable). The critics are humourless bores who either don't like the fantasy element (because every remake of this story should be just like the eleventy zillion previous versions), or they still bear a grudge against the director for making Resident Evil (another fun action movie).

It would've been better if they had included Rochefort's dialogue from this deleted extended version. It added to his villainous character. And this fight might've been better without a lot of music that way we can hear the sword clanging and therefore be able to feel it more too.

Thanks for this. In the movie it was never explained why Rochefort constantly 'cheats' and tries the most 'dishonorable' ways to dispose of d'Artagnan, despite the fact that he's clearly an accomplished swordsman.

Nitzky 89 Because he knows like his father D"D'Artagnan is better and he is a cheater he likes to do it, Rochefort, is dishonorable at least in 1993 one it's supposedly he is a disgraced musketeer who sold out Dartagnan's father a fellow Musketeer and also sold out King Louis the father of the young one in that movie, as a result, the King was assassinated and Dartagnan Sr died trying to protect him at the hands of Rochefort hence why that one wears an eye patch does he have one in this version according to his biography Rochefort is rugged ruthless mean insane psychotic and uncaring don't all those fit

What didn't make sense at all is that D'Artagnan is a very rookie swordsman who has talent but lacks real skill and battle experience and he makes up for the lack of them with his endurance and stamina but that shouldn't count much cause as you see Rochefort was basically the best swordsman in whole France or one of the best possibly, with DOZENS YEARS of battle experience and you can clearly see that in the duel. Both this version and the theatrical cut show that Rochefort for most of the fight toyed with D'Artagnan. Using a legendary actor like Mads Mikkelsen for a character like this and give him this extremely anti-climatic death is one of the plot holes of the movie, one of the biggest probably.

I don't really understand the ending there, was he supposed to have shot the sword? Is that why it was in the air so long? Did she think he had purposely shot the sword in order to give d'Artagnan time to catch it? Is that why she said good shot? Because clearly it would have made more sense just to shoot his opponent. None of it made sense, probably my denseness though.
