Has anyone ever seen someone write a solid example of these rules? Like, total blank canvas of code, what's the first thing written (the failing unit test)? I'm hoping to wrap my head around this someday.

Good stuff … but the purpose of writing the test first is to express what we want the software to do rather than how to test it.

Posts like this are why people don't understand TDD, without defining the flow, it just looks clunky and awful, it's why Kent Beck's book on the subject introduces Red-Green-Refactor before these later principles
