It certainly was a great era for rock of all sorts. I'd venture to say it was the golden age of mainstream rock. Better Than Ezra, Candlebox, Alice in Chains, Spacehog, Eve 6, Third Eye Blind, Semisonic, Weezer, 4 Non Blonds, Matchbox 20, Soundgarden, Gin Blossoms, I could go on for eternity.

I always liked this song, and assumed it was just about a guy trying to get laid. But then I really listened to the words one day and realized it was about a vampire asking a girl if she wanted his "dark secret", promising her she'd always be young and beautiful, and I thought, well damn. Now I LOVE this song!

I know there are several theories about the meanings of this song. And the Toadies have themselves been quoted (by many articles, I can't find any direct quotes) as denying ALL of those theories. They have said it's not about a vampire, but they've also said it's not about a serial killer. There is an actual lake and area in Texas called Possum Kingdom and there's an urban legend there about a serial killer. But there were no actual rapes or killings there. If you have read Anne Rice's vampire series, you'll find many references in this song that point to it being about a vampire. Promising the girl that she'll stay beautiful forever and that he'll treat her well. His "dark secret", etc, point to him being a vampire who is asking her to die (become a vampire) to walk by his side as his companion. Also this song came out the year after the movie, Interview With the Vampire was released, meaning that it may have been written about that time. Since the Toadies have never given a clear answer that I can find about the meaning of this song, I think it's highly possible they just enjoy keeping the meaning a mystery. I maintain that Interview With The Vampire influenced it, and that it's about a vampire. I could be wrong, but I don't think I am. And no matter WHAT the meaning is, I just love this song. :)

+Hugh Llewellyn Well, as a texan and as someone who grew up around the area, this song is actually about his uncle who would lure girls to his boat house off possum kingdom lake and tape and then murder them. I can't say for certain how many of them there actually were, b ut there was at least 2 that he did this to.
@HughLlewellyn
8 жыл бұрын
+colin helm I have found zero evidence online that anything actually happened to anyone at that lake. And zero mention of an uncle doing nefarious deeds. Here's a quote from one article (songplaces.com) I found: Todd Lewis - who wrote this song - was truthful when revealing to RIP magazine in 1995 that “it’s just a story I heard long ago; just a really cool, eerie lake and some stuff I heard and some stuff I just make up. I tend to do that. They dammed up this big river up there and it’s got all these spooky names like Hell’s Gate. It’s really cool.” I don't think the references in the song that coincide with Anne Rice's vampire stories are accidental. I think he invented a backstory for the urban legends surrounding the lake, and it was at about the same time as Interview With The Vampire came out. I still believe the song was influenced by it. We may never know though, because Todd Lewis seems to want the meaning of the song to stay a mystery. Which is fine by me. I like that. :)

The song is about a dream he had where a person was convinced to burn themself to achieve a higher life. Then that person was stuck between lives and tries to convince others to do the same to join him. That's how he explained it at the Dia de los toadies acoustic show.

God, this song is awesome! I love his voice. Why don't they ever celebrate 90's music? It's always the 80's. I'm sick to death of the 80's. 90's music is one of the best since the 60's. Can you say Nirvana? Pearl Jam? Spin Doctors? Okay, that's a stretch. But I like them anyway.
