The Tonight Show was 90 minutes long until 1980 and I think it was better than the hour version. More laid back, more time for skits and odd guests. Much less hurried and frenetic as you note. For instance the musical interlude that ran from about 7:15 to 8:20 was not unusual. My recollection is that it didn't usually run quite that long but 30-40 seconds wasn't unusual. Perhaps a Tonight Show expert can speak to that more authoritatively than I can.

Thanx for sharing, pannoni 8! I hadn't seen this show before, except the monologue, and some of what followed, bc I've never been a fan of Newley, and would've switched channels, or crashed. Good show, tho. Yes, I skipped Newley, and went straight to Freddie. Always loved Chico and the Man, and Freddie's stand-up and interviews. Never saw Million-Dollar Rip-Off. Would've liked to. Jan Stephenson's interview, and Ray Johnson's, were very entertaining. And it was nice to listen to the band again. Thanx so much for sharing! Keep 'em coming, please?

Guessin this was one of Freddie’s last appearances on Carson. His eyes don’t look right at all. Freddie later admitted he HATED the TV movie “Million Dollar Rip Off”. The critics of the day didn’t think much of it either. At any rate, Freddie was a hell of a talent.
