My only fear of them getting rid of gendered categories, they may not include women. Cis men are often chosen over women and it's a big problem. Take the golden globes directing category for example. So while it's important to be inclusive of trans and non-binary performers, there's not a black and white solution. Edit: you went on to say this in the video, but I still feel it's important to note.

I don't think this issue is being considered enough -- yes, we need to find away to make sure we're exclusive to all -- but at the same time, we can't allow the "solutions" to be used as a loop hole to only nominate men; which sadly is the case most of the time when award shows go genderless. Or if they've never had a gender - Look at the Oscars; the director category was all men, even though they were some great female directors this year. And yes some of that can be combated by "calling them out" but let's face it, a lot of the time they don't care -- and their gonna do what they wanna do.

I’ve read enough articles interviewing Tony voters (while they are anonymous) where I would not trust them. You are correct we have seen them only nominate men in the past for directing/composing awards and honestly, I wouldn’t trust them to nominate women and acting categories after that. If I personally was to propose a solution for the current situation, I would propose that acting categories be “actor in a female presenting role” and “actor in a male presenting role” where one year a category would be “female and non-binary presenting character” and the next year it would be “male and non-binary presenting character” alternating until the scene has a consistent amount of non-binary actors for their own category. That way if a non-binary actor performs in a male/female role, they automatically know what category they’re in. And a non-binary actor playing a non-binary character knows what category they are opted into based off of the year and which category has non-binary with it. (And it allows for people to not miss out on getting nominated while also, ensuring that not all of one gender gets nominated for a single acting category) I don’t think my idea is perfect, but it could be a solution. The reason the back of house categories aren't gendered is because historically they've been only ever male anyway. Even outside of the world of live theatre and over into the world of film, female directors have only ever really been recognized within my lifetime. Obviously the big exception to this is the wardrobe which was fairly evenly split but even now it's a handful of big names who get nominated every time anyway with very few new names thrown in until one of the big names is no longer working for one reason or another. Acting, at least in "modern" times (and by modern I mean post-Elizabethan when women were finally allowed to perform on stage) has always included both binary genders in a fairly even mix which would make it the easiest category to divide by gender. Imagine "Best Female Director" in the 1930s. There wouldn't be a single name.

If the intent of getting rid of gendered categories is to be more inclusive to non-binary performers but the impact is that men win everything over women and non-binary people is it actually more inclusive? Firstly, full support and respect for trans and non-binary performers. They deserve to have their work recognised. But regarding removing gender categories - a great many people have made the point in the comments that women tend not to get recognised when merged. I’d like to draw a parallel with the literary world - the women’s prize for fiction was created because not a single novel written by a female was nominated for the Booker in 1991. From the Wikipedia article, “Research showed that women’s literary achievements were often not acknowledged by the major literary prizes.” It might not be so visible to the more open-minded and honest hearted among us, but while misogyny still exists in culture, its influence will still be felt in awards ceremonies. Perhaps we could compromise and say open awards categories, but appoint a reflective judging panel?

I also think this is a huge reason Jagged Little Pill changed Jo from a non binary role to a cis female role. The ART production was getting rave reviews particularly for the actress Playing Jo. I think the creative team were really worried 1) they cast a cis woman to play a non binary role. 2) they wanted to get a tony for her SO BAD. So they gaslight and lied that Jo was ever non binary going so far as to have a Livestream discussing gender identity and gender expression (a huge slap in the face and condescending move that made people who were mad look like idiots and completely disregarding the people calling them out very well know the difference). And the most anger inducing thing? IT WORKED that actress got her Tony and Jagged Little Pill quietly made Jo back into a non binary character (from what I understand). Because audiences -- particularly TV audiences -- are more interested in performers than in other creative artists. If it was a level playing feild between men and women I'd totally go for genderless being the answer- the trouble is that there is a gap- there's a pay gap and a visibility gap and I think those would get worse if we suddenly had less actresses with awards- 'Tony awar winning' is a bump to anyone's resume and often helped in promoting a show so it must have some influence on casting and pay. The voting pools are largely white straight men and we know that people tend to vote more to something that they recognise and hits home for them (some incredible black performances/storys have been missed by white voters becauses it didn't resonate as much for them 😢) It would be regressive if the gender split got worse because there was a award gender gap too. There does need to be a solution though, we can't have non binary actors being forced to pick a catagory against their will or miss out on the oppotunities. I'm not sure what the answer is, genderless might look like the straightforward option but I suspect it will have some fairly severe downfalls. Maybe in the interim while they figure things out there should be a queer award- covering non binary and roles where gender identity isn't straightforward (a transman/woman should be under the gender catagory they identify as but I can think of a few roles where they start prior to the character's transition and the character identifies as more than one gender during the production) But that might be somewhat othering so I jsut don't know Totally with you on the additional awards- all awards should recognise ensemble casts

I am of the personal opinion that completely removing the gender categories is not a smart idea and arguably hurts female and non-binary artists. If you look at the Tony categories that don't have any gender specification only 5 women have ever won the Tony for best direction in a musical and only 6 for best direction of a play. A solution could be to have one category with 2 awards and have a percentage of the nominees have to be women (Say like 30-40%) this does not stop them from giving the award to 2 cis men but it would stop it from becoming like the BRIT awards where only men where nominated for artist of the year

I think the reason acting categories are split, while directing etc. aren't is because the creatives behind the scene disappear more in their work, while acting is very tied to the person on stage. But entirely getting rid of gendered categories seems like the best solution.

Acting categories are separated is to basically hand out more awards and get stars to appear at the ceremony. While I do find it odd that every category in award organizations are genderless except for acting, we know it’s a male dominated, cis straight, white, and friends thing. Like the Golden Globes and Oscars; lots of strong female directors this year but they were shut out. The whole Andrea Riseborough controversy who had her mostly white friends vote to nominate her that ultimately shut out two actresses of color. And there was a play who changed a character’s gender from non binary to cis so the role could get nominated w/o having this discussion. So keep the gendered category and add “Best Performance” (supporting & lead). A category where non binary actors & cis actors can be submitted in. So a male or female or non binary actor can either submit their nom to a gendered category or a non gendered category but not both. That probably run the risk of being dominated by cis actors or male actors. Or have non binary actors submit their nom in either male or female categories.

Going genderless and having only a "Best Performance" category would mean only half as many performers would receive awards. On the other hand, since the number of non-binary performers is far smaller than those of male or female performers, if there were a new performance by a non-binary performer category it would likely be a much smaller pool of performers to choose from, thus mathematically a significantly higher chance of being nominated and of winning than gendered performers. It is not an easy answer. Numerous actors (George C. Scott and Brando among them) have decried the inherent unfairness of acting awards in general based on the fact that so much of a performance depends on the writer and the director that you really can't know who gave the best performance unless you see all of the nominees perform the same role. A ridiculous concept in some ways, but I take their point- there's truth in it.

As disappointing as this whole situation is, I would rather have ATW take their time to amend their acting categories instead of just tacking on one for people who don’t identify as male nor female. As you’ve pointed out, there are a lot of things to consider in terms of what these changes will entail (how many nomination slots, how many winners, etc), and I’d rather have ATW bring in people like Justin and other genderqueer performers to discuss and have them take their time to fine tune before making it official. And while we all wish that these changes can be done this year, realistically, it would undermine any campaigns that have started by other shows. Precedence also shows that categories are added or taken away at the end or beginning of each season (see sound design), and while it would be nice to see probable genderless acting categories by the 2024 ceremony, I would think that this will be implemented for 2025 at the earliest. You covered most of my thoughts in the video already, and we saw with the Brit Awards only a month ago what happens when they try to go gender neutral -- the awards go to men. Is there a minimum number of nominees per category? Say, you have to have at least 5 people? With something like 95% of US adults still identifying as male or female, producers might not think it's worth it to add "Best Non-Binary Performer" if there's only going to be 3 nominees and it seems like it will be those same nominees for years. Maybe as more Non-Binary performers enter the profession that might be the case, but I think it'll be years before that happens. I expect everyone will use the "(fe)male presenting role" wording to appear inclusive for awhile yet. Note that even the show you mentioned specifically about a non-binary person still uses a male pronoun - My SON'S a Queer, not My CHILD's a Queer.

I think there's a simple answer why there's a "Best Actor" and "Best Actress" while only one "Best Director" - the vast majority of shows feature one Director, and lead male and lead female roles. Patriarchy prioritises the male award as more valuable than the female, so there's kick-back there... I wouldn't like to see the number of performance awards halved, for sure. But there's definitely options... I'd categorise leading roles by size of the production - the performance needed to fill the Dominion is so different to an intimate fringe performance! And length of run could be a category too? Tour vs stationary? New work / revival / replacement in the role - It's a very different kettle of fish whether someone created the role, workshopped it, helped mold the character, or whether they took an existing work and brought their own light to it. Both very worthy of recognition but in very different ways!

There are just so many actors in seems a shame to only award two per year with supporting/lead. I think they should try to award as many as possible. Get a child actor award. Create a ranked choice nomination scheme for all actors without consideration for gender, THEN once the nomination pool is received, the performers can be divided by gender, with the top vote-getting male and female actors filling out the Actor/Actress category. BUT if a non-binary actor hits a certain threshold of votes (ATW would need to establish the threshold which, yeah, may be somewhat arbitrary, but so is life), then that year there will be a non-binary acting category and that actor will be nominated. It may end up that in a year when a nonbinary actor reaches the threshold of required nomination votes, that actor ends up the only person nominated in the nonbinary category, guaranteeing them a Tony (kinda like Aaron Tveit in 2020). Now lets apply our brain cells to the problem of getting more non-males nominated in the directing and writing categories because that's a much bigger problem.

i think the reason (besides the monetary ones you stated) at least outwardly are to ensure that at least one female actress is recognized for the categories every year bc if they were all lumped together, then we can’t trust the voters to not just pick all men all the time. that being said, we’re now ostracizing the non binary performers of the industry so i think the best idea would be to do away with that entirely (i personally prefer the idea you offered here of distinguishing by tone i.e. comedy vs drama) and just hold them accountable for representation of minorities. easier said than done tho without a rigid structure of “at least one person if x gender needs to be nominated”. i also would like to say as a non binary person i fucking despise the “just add a third category” thing because there’s starting to be this shift in the public opinion while ppl see more non binary rep to just think of being non binary as the “third gender” which it by definition is not, so i find that solution very bad. all around, tough situation. i just hope some real change is made bc this cannot keep happening.

I don't think there is sufficient data for performers specifically, but per the most extensive studies to date approximately 1.2 million people in the U.S.A. self identify as non-binary. The figure is roughly half of 1% of the overall adult population, or 11% of the LGBT population identify as non-binary. The vast majority of them are, like the performer in this story, in their teens and twenties. Even assuming that people who self identify as non-binary are, like the traditional LGBT community, overrepresented in entertainment, it would still make them a very small minority of performers.

My first thought of why there should be separate categories for acting but not for other creatives is maybe because each production has (or it seems like from an external, non-expert perspective) a lot more actors with less of a clear hierarchy. Maybe people think that most shows would have a leading man and woman, so if you put them together, if a show wants to focus their efforts around putting forward one person for each category then how would they choose who? And having separate categories for comedy and drama etc. wouldn't solve that. But when you actually think about it not all shows are built like that anyway, it wouldn't make a difference eg for a same-sex romance plot, so it's not really a good enough argument to keep gendered categories

@MickeyJoTheater This is so well thought out and your view points are so valid. Broadway has been behind the ball for awhile. I have alway found it kinda funny, mainly due to the fact that theater is filled with more progressive individuals. Things here in the US are much more political, including theater. But change is coming very soon and it is apparent. Think about what happened with Jagged Little Pill. I think that was rather public. Thus helping push the issue of queer representation, in theater, to the forefront. Gendered categories should be gotten rid of. When it happens, "Actor" should be used as an inclusive term. It would be a good idea to increase the number of nominated individual as well. Then possibly categories being represented by genre. An example being... Best Actor in a Comedy Musical Best Actor in a Dramatic Musical Also you should go to Joe Alens for dinner while in NYC. It is well known in the theater community here, for having the wall of "Flops".

I'd like more major awards shows to recognise replacement roles in long-running shows as well as ensemble casts. Every so often you'll get someone come in with a new take idk JVJ but they don't get recognised for that? Or a new director comes in and helps give a fresh take on an existing show. I know things like WhatsOnStage and public vote awards do include variations on this but it would be nice for the major events like the Oliviers to also do the same. Also I get the arguments against it but as a non-binary person I quite like the idea of having 3 categories. Female, male, trans&non-binary. Gives more opportunities to celebrate artists, but it also would hopefully encourage casting of more trans & non-binary people in major productions and give way to better representation. Also expand it to all the other categories and make awards shows 3-weeks long 😅😅😅

In terms of performance there is a difference with the way people perform based on biology (the most obvious being vocal range) which can make comparisons easier when gendered awards are in place. Obviously there are exceptions to every rule, and the Olivier awards handled it brilliantly last year with the nomination, and winner, of the Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Play - which went to the SEVEN people (male & female) who play the Tiger in Life of Pi. Why does everything have to be categorised to the Nth degree - if someone is worthy of a nomination, surely they should be in a best fit category?

The Tonys weren't televised when they were first created, so ratings (at least then) had nothing to do with the gender division. The fact that a lot of the historically major awards are having ongoing discussions means they are not wanting to deal with negating the history of why the categories existed in the past. Making a single, genderless category does not seem like a solution. WE, the public, aren't the voters, and the entertainment industry is very retaliatory when it is told what to do: meaning everyone the voters are mad at won't be nominated. The Oscars, the original all-boys club, has incident of this throughout its history in its non-gender categories. Speaking of those, they aren't gendered because there wouldn't have been any women to nominate when they were created. The solution? Try something. If it doesn't work, try something else. Maybe let non-gender be nom'd in both male and female instead of them having to pick one, and make the category "male and other" and "female and other (or the appropriate term)". "Best ensemble" has been proposed for a LONG time. A LONG time. I agree "comedy or musical" is comparing apples and orangutans.

Love this video, MickeyJo! I can't wait for your visit to NYC and hope there is opportunity to cross paths. I particularly appreciate your discussion on defining PERFORMANCE by gender and not any other category in the profession and I just want to say that your comments on the quality of material written for differing gender expressions rings particularly true for me. YES, there are wonderful roles of all genders in both 'straight' plays and musical theatre that provide for incredible performances, the WAY in which those characters are written specifically in MUSICAL theatre does tend to vary more widely - and that is something ELSE to unpack. I think we also have to dive more deeply into the idea of Diva Worship here and how that encourages and discourages inclusion within categories and category definitions, as well as the "marquee value" of gender division in Awards - specifically the Tonys... each show generally has ONE director or one designer of each discipline, but far more actors, and dividing performance categories by gender gives the show more opportunities to rack up higher numbers of awards and nominations to claim on the marquee - the 'general' division of Lead vs Featured for specific actors is often appealed by producers to put someone in the category more likely to win to help push those numbers higher...

Initially I was concerned, like many comments, that these categories would then be dominated by cis men. In my person experience, people tend to prefer and vote for male voices and performances, and the demographics of the voting block are very important. But you have convinced me. I might actually divide performances by revival and new work, the way the overall and writing awards are, because the previous incarnations of a role affect how I view a new performance of that role, unlike how I view something totally new. The fact that other awards shows are doing this already, well, we should see how successful they are AND how diverse their voting members are. It’s only a matter of time (as new more diverse people begin to work in theatre and entertainment, and older ones die or retire) for the voting bodies to change for the better, but we don’t want several painful years where all non-men are not recognized because cis men heavily bias the votes.

Sure I will get some flack for this… But… Well, while it’s sort of fun to guess who will be and see the winner in any category… perhaps the whole concept of awards shows need to be reexamined. Who better than those involved in the theater to try and explore new territory. The term best often seems arbitrary. Often apples are being Compared to oranges. There are winners and losers, when many of the “losers” are just as worthy. Perhaps thats how life works and with less competition no-one will watch or care. I don’t know the answer. I just believe its a great time to upturn the entire fruit cart and see what new and perhaps fairer and more interesting way of celebrating theater can be created

So the solution to all of this is to have a "HE/SHE/THEY" category for performances at the Tonys? More likely, in the future, they will go with just "BEST LEADING PERFORMANCE BY (IT!)" and "BEST FEATURED PERFORMANCE" categories. No more gender specific since the male and female sexes no longer are relevant. All Broadway performers should now be referred to as IT. The IT Awards! This clearly was not one of my favorite videos of yours. This art form is queer enough I think.

You understand they as a gender neutral pronoun, there's no need to refer to anyone as it, it's dehumanising and rude.
