They certainly do,almost to a fault. My favorite tank of all time is the Tiger-hands down the ground breaking tank that shook up the allies and I'm American. That being said the Germans had less than 1500 Tigers and the US had 49,000 Shermans.American military might is in supplying and have the capacity to make far more than anybody, anybody.and to better supply parts repair and fuel so it's an overall build of the tank that can mean the difference when it counts.

1.) The Soviets had unlimited resources of steel (Germany had a lack of resources) which allowed them to build a large number of tanks like T-34-85 so they could overrun the German tanks 2.) The German tanks had a strongly limited number of munitions 3.) The PzKpfw VIB Tiger II was the most deadliest tank in this time but the tank had a lot of technical problems and failures because the electrical system in the Tiger II wasn't fully developed because Germany was under pressure To be continued

Part 8: I can't say much about the new Korean and Japanese MBTs, but I am a bit worried that they could perhaps fall into the "too much complicated stuff"-category like the Leclerc. Part 5: Still, you can't really blame the British engineers too much. When they designed the Challenger, they didn't know that it would have to stay in service for so long. If the Cold War would have gone on longer and new MBT designs would have been commissioned, the modular design and adaptability of the Leo2 wouldn't have turned out to be such a huge advantage. The Germans just placed a better bet on the future of MBTs.

The RPG 7 incidents comprise of insurgents fighting at the Abrams tracks, this would take out of action ANY tank. There was a case when a malfunctioning fuel tank was ignited after an RPG7 hit it with the resulting fire spreading to the engine. This amazingly enough DIDN"T take out the tank, so the crew decided to trash the tank by throwing grenades inside of it and the tank still survived, then they launched Hellfire missiles at it and still the tank look intact. Impressive I think.

Yes, HESH works better with a rifled gun and also HESH isn't impeded much (except that the projectile needs longer to reach the target) by the lower muzzle velocities a rifled gun yields. The problem is that the widespread use of spaced armor and inner liners made HESH pretty much obsolete as an anti tank weapon. The rifled tank gun was specifically kept around on the assumption that HESH would stay a state of the art multi purpose ammunition, which didn't happen. They bet on the wrong horse.

Who can build the most good tanks? The USA is the only one that can build a good tank in great numbers. In WWII the Sherman was a SHIT tank but it won because of support and numbers.

Part 2: Other armies without such a big helicopter fleet are usually better off with a diesel engine. The Leopard 2 design is based on experiences the Germans made in WW2. They deliberately made it as simple and rugged as possible and refrained from using anything fancy (like hydraulic suspension for example) that would increase the risk of mechanical breakdowns in prolonged high intensity battlefield conditions. In a way the Leo is rather a successor to the Russian WW2 tanks than to the Tiger.

I don't know which one is the best but the Abrams is a tank with more battle experience that most other tanks these days so that has to count for something. @matzeh1985 Plus, The Abrams is from 1980, the Leopard 2 from 1979. The first version of the Abrams had a 105mm gun, which was replaced by the L44 120mm smoothbore cannon of the Leopard 2 (Which nowadays isn't used in the Leopard 2 anymore, because it was replaced by the L55 cannon --> more powerfull, higher shooting range). Both, the Abrams and the one year older Leopard 2 have been improved over the years, but the modern Leopard 2a7+ is a better tank than the M1a2 Abrams.

The Leopard, Abrams, Leclerc, Challenger, Merkava and some others all have the same gun, or a variant of. And they all can fire the same ammunition. They all have their complemint of machine guns, only the Merkava has a 60mm mortar. So the difference is quantity and quality of armour. But they are all classified so nobody knows. Reliability of engine and components appears to be reasonably good nowdays. I agree with your comment about comparison of survivability. That is very interesting.

4.) The German tanks were designed more for armor than on movement, so the Soviet tanks could move at a distance of some 100 meters before to penetrate their armor 5.) German steel was the hardest steel at this time but the steel wasn't resilient so a shot from a other tank maybe can't penetrate the armor, but can kill the crew because of the splinters of armor But anyway, the German tanks like Panther, Tiger, Tiger II, Jagdtiger and so on were the most dangerous and best tanks at this time!

Part 1: The problem with such lists is that even though all those tanks seem so similar, there still is a different philosophy and different strategical and tactical requirements behind each design. The Merkava for example is build specifically for Middle Eastern terrain conditions and would probably fare rather badly when used in muddy Eurasian conditions. The Abrams uses a gas turbine because for the US Arny it is advantageous to have a MBT that uses the same fuel as their helicopters.

Part 4: The designers of the Challenger basically put all their energy into developing the Chobham armor and then designed a rather uninspired, "just good enough" tank to carry around their wonder armor. The Challenger is underpowered compared to other modern MBTs and the decision to stick with a rifled gun is questionable too. The design is just too conventional and would not be up to par without the good armor and good fire control system.

If you have a good supply line and resupplying/maintenance/refueling aren't a problem then I'd have to say the Abrams. If supply lines were cut and the tanks were on their own for a day or so then I'd prefer the Leopard. There are some upgrades that I would love to see in both tanks, like the L/55 and a more efficient engine such as the LV 100-5 turbine engine in the Abrams; and a DU armor and the Abrams computing system on the Leopard; and a Trophy or Quick Kill systems in both.

Part 3: The Leclerc is supposed to be a high end, high tech tank that utilizes all the most modern technological gimmicks available at the time it was designed, but very much like the equally ambitious German WW2 tanks, it is infamously prone to malfunctions and breakdowns. In that regard Leopard and Leclerc are each other's anti thesis. The French repeated the German mistakes from WW2 while the Germans learned from the Russians and used the "simple but sturdy" approach.

The Altay has the same basic-specification as the K2. Only difference is the longer main-weapon. That's it. The K2 was tested against Abrams, Leopard 2, Merkava IV and the T-90. The Altay is at the level of a better T-80...with the difference of a better main-weapon. So you have to admit, that the Altay is faaar away of even being one of the top-10 tanks. See it this way: To defeat one Abrams or Merkava IV you'll need at least 2 or 3 of your beloved Altay-tanks. and even then it's a close run.

According to those source's only 250 Drozd were issued to navel armour. Some were sent to Afghanistan where they increased the survivability of those vehicles. But, apart from that, it seams they never entered wide spread service. Is it an issue of "declined, insufficient funds!"??

It all depends what you want the tank for - if you want a head on charge across a desert then a Abrams would be good - if you want to slug it out at range a Challenger 2 - A good alrounder would be a Lepard and for more built up areas a Latrec - all are unlikely to meet each other in combat because of the countries who use them are allies - most of the others relly on exploseve armour so 2 hits in the same spot and you in trouble

The best tank right now is the T14 Armata tank from Russia.

I agree, Leopard 2 is best tank, It can withstand mine hit from the belly of the tank, against top attack such as the Javelin rocket. Easy fix b/c you remove the entire engine out place the new one like Lego part, EMES 15 fire control system, commander has independent periscope, engage moving targets at ranges of up to 5,000 meters on the move over rough terrain drive through water 4 meters deep using a snorkel or 1.2 meters without any preparation and climb vertical obstacles over one 1 m high

Of course the Leopard 2 is the best, it was done by skill Germans hands. It's like asking Italians to make pizza or asking Scots to make whiskey.

I'm not British I'm Australian Yeah we have the M1A1 Abrams tank wish we had the Leopard 2 tank it would have suited our tankers since we use to have the Leopard 1 tank. The thing I personally love about the 120mm rifled cannon is its more accurate.Using a hesh round in a rifled cannon is much more accruate than in a smoothbore even the old hand held muskets prove rifled is better than smoothbore. They are changeing to smoothbore because the rounds are cheaper.Which will leave India the only user

This list seems just a author's favorite tanks list. There is no consideration about performance, arm, armor, infomation processing, etc.

The US uses Abrams, Australia uses Abrams, Egypt does too, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia & Greece aswell. These are 7 Counties. Also 2300 Leopard 2 were sold to other Countries. About 10 from these 18 Counties who use Leopard 2 use a few old Leopard 2. How many Abrams were sold to other Countries? 2700. The M1A2 costs was 6,2 million $ in 1992, in 2010 it was 4,3 million $. The Leopard 2A7 costs 8,5 million €, that are 11 million $. Sweden bought Leo II instead of Abrams, cause of operating cost.

The most experts say that the german Leopard 2 is the best. It has the ability to use more arts of fuel, don´t need so much, less infrared-rays. Its also faster. The Leopard also can shoot LAHAT , the abrams only 3 types of Ammunition. So the Leopard is more manoevrable, better or equal armed . The abrams is just better protected, so the Leopard wins in 2 categories, Abrams only in 1.

Alot of people arguing which country has the best tanks... that matters overall is the army's strength, and that goes to United States.

Well, the Altay isn't combat proven, just like Leopard 2 & T-90. Merkava & Challenger ARE proven. I still wouldn't call it a joke.

why is the K2 in this list? i read somewhere that South Korea stopped production due to design issues, and of course it's designed almost entirely based on what the E.U. and U.S. were willing to share with South Korea. same gun, similar engine, cheaper armor, and look at the turret? no slope at all, any hit from any side looks like it'll put full force on it, pop off the lid

they may be old in the basic, but they are modernized every single year. And you are right, it's not a copy, it IS the K2 with another engine. that's it. If you do not want to believe it, your fault. But do not cry the day a "Altay" is destroyed by an "old-school" tank like the leopard 2A7. The Altay may be new (btw: he is from 2007. So he is old too) but he is far away of being one of the top-10. Do you really think your uper case does mean you are "the man"? go playin' duplo, kid.

*with long range main guns * Really? They use the old L/44 gun from Rheinmetall, while the A6's use the newer and longer L/55. Longer = faster muzzle velocity = higher penetrating power.

Good list here KungFu. I would think the Oplat with it's improved " Western " style autoloader would rank higher then the Type 99. Taking the ammo out of the hul & putting it where it belongs , safely packed away in an amored box was the smartest thing that the Ukrainians did to improve the T-72 class of tanks. If the Russians restart the Balck Eagle program with improvements then this list will change again. Your thoughts???

@MadMilitiaMen LoL. You are referring to an event 70 years ago. Modern fighter aircrafts can fly from one end of europe to the other in 2,5h, during WW2 this would have taken 10h. Today, nearly every tank can be carried by plane. There are even binational troops like the eurocorps, which are stationed and trained together for better cooperation in case one of the member-states is attacked. And btw, in WW2 there was just no chance for britain to help Poland, France or anyone else.

Wrong! Even with crisis it's still bigger Lufthansa - Members: 117.000, Destinations: 217, Revenue: ~ 30.1 Billion, Fleet: 407 Turkish Airlines - Members: 15.897, Destinations: 204, Revenue: ~ 8.32 Billion, Fleet: 212 Looks clear to me, yet Lufthansa is still bigger and makes more money (Even with crisis)
