The pet stores advertise them as a beginner pet! My husband saw that and that was why he introduced the idea to our 8 year old as the next pet after the rough green snake died. Luckily we went to an exotic pet store that recommended an African fat tail gecko instead (and had one in stock). ANd enchanted my daughter with the idea so we're now looking at a Leopard gecko or African fat tail. (We're going to Repticon in February with the idea of coming home with one, if she can find one there in our price budget that appeals to her). We're in the process of setting up the tank currently.

As I started to do the research, I lined up the pet sitters because we travel from time to time and unlike dogs and cats, no one board a tegu. Thank you SO MUCH for mentioning bearded dragons! I also got them as my first reptile and they are so much more work than people say... Let me make a list: 1. People always say that their omnivorous diet is great because you can feed them a lot of different things. That is absolutely false, instead they NEED to feed on a lot of different things and you also have to learn what is actually healthy or poisonous to them. They also eat a lot and especially the insect feeders can get really expensive. 2. Their poop smells horrible. I know that you can prevent this by keeping their cage clean, but their enclosure will smell if you miss it even once. 3. Very prone to metabolic bone disease, so you need to ensure that your lighting is on point to keep them healthy. It is just devastating to see these deformed beardis from beginners who got the lighting wrong.

I somewhat disagree with bearded dragons not being good for beginners. If someone does their research and has the funds and space to properly care for them, they can be a great choice because of their docile natures, in my opinion. Honestly I would highly disagree any animal should be researched before taken home. Their humidity is so easy to control of they are in a plastic bin glass for whatever reason doesn't retain it. Food wise just offer once a week or every other week if they still don't accept it might be stress just darken the enclosure for a week and try again. Ball pythons depending on where you get them are usually awesome for beginners...granted I grew up catching and releasing wild snakes and lizards so bites never concerned me ^^;... I definitely agree that bearded dragons are not good beginner pets. I was told "oh, they are soooo easy to take care of" by a lot of people and then come to discover that they have more requirements than some other reptiles. I knew nothing about UVB lights, nothing about their varying diets as they age, nothing about the space they require, etc. I had to learn it all by myself, because everyone I talked to made it seem like they were just so simple to take care of. My leopard gecko is simple to care for. My beardie is another story. Now, I constantly get messages from people I know who ended up getting baby bearded dragons thinking they were "cute and inexpensive" only to have to inform them of all the differences of care between an adult and a baby bearded dragon. Getting my bearded dragon taught me a lot about fully researching EVERYTHING before getting a pet. I used to want a chameleon and I still love them, but after researching their care, I understand that it is too advanced for me. I'd rather admire them from videos or in someone else's house who is more capable of care for them.

While I do pretty much agree. A Brazilian rainbow boa baby was my first pet reptile. There have been a few times where I have failed to keep the humidity up high. She has had probably 2 sheds that weren’t perfect so I just made a humidity box for her and that solved the issue. And as long as the humidity averages around 60-70 and bumped up to like 80-90 during sheds they will be fine. Mine eats like a garbage disposal and is growing like a weed and has never once struck at me, she’s a great pet. Oh and another thing is she absolutely hates water. If any part of her body touches water she immediately tries to get away from it and does not like to be put in a water container to soak. So that’s kinda funny lol

I started with beardies and a cornsnake. Years later, no more beardies nor snakes. I've been wanting a tegu for over 10 years, and a bluetongueskink for over 4 years. A year ago i bought my first giant bluetongueskink, she's the best ❤️, and june 22th i finally bought my red tegu, he's a dream come true 😍

My first reptile was a bearded dragon. But I spent months talking with the breeder before I got one. Colorado has relatively low humidity. So I think that helped make things easier. Oh and on average 300 days of sunshine. Summers in CO are perfect for bearded dragons.

Hey brother, just gotta tell ya... I got my first reptile at the age of 34 and I have to say that this dude wouldn't have stood a chance without me watching your videos. As an Arizona resident I can say you can't just leave a tortoise outside either you need to create a safe space for it I unfortunately had a friend who lost his young tortoise to a feral cat attack and even in Phoenix you still have coyotes to deal with as well. So if you are going to get a tortoise even if you're going to keep it outside it still needs an enclosure of some sort or somewhere that it can be kept safe.

I got a veiled chameleon as a beginner pet, and can assure you that getting a chameleons environment right is SO hard. They’re super picky when it comes to water, and keeping a stable environment with a mesh cage is very difficult.

Also snapping turtles! My local Petstore sells snapping turtles to whomever has the money. I have a snapping turtle but I did over a year worth of research before I got her, I also plan on getting a pond built when shes big enough (shes currently 5-6 inches). Thank you for mentioning sulcatas! I have one I purchased and 2 I rescued because "they got too big" smh

I disagree about the BRB's. I'm a first time reptile owner and brought home two BRB's. They are thriving and doing wonderful. My humidity is 100% per hygrometer (well actually 99%, it doesn't register high enough for the 3 digits on the screen). They are babies so they are in a sterilite gasket 37qt bin and with those its very easy to maintain high humidity. Once they are big enough to go into their 4x2x2 enclosures I already have a mistking ready to go. I went out of town for a week over Christmas and didn't have my roommate bother the BRBs, when I came home humidity was still 100% and they both had perfect sheds when I got back. Of course I tested this out before I left where I didn't mist for a whole week and monitored humidity levels the whole time and it never dropped. Keeping them on Reptibark coco and Eco Earth. They have always had perfect sheds with me, fully intact, eye caps and all, eating great, pooping great, which tells me my husbandry is spot on. This is all possible because I did my homework before I got them. I went to youtube school with trusted, very experienced keepers, to learn about reptiles and husbandry. Oh and did I mention I live in Phoenix AZ where its incredibly dry??? yet I'm still keeping the humidity levels perfect. It can be done. Its not impossible. Now if you are a shitty pet owner it may be difficult..

My parents bought a baby panther chameleon as their first reptile, they kept her in a glass enclosure and they insisted she could drink from a small water bowl. They handled her almost everyday she stopped eating and refused to open her eyes, I tried to help her by syringe feeding and watering her and giving her vitamins, but she just threw it back up she sadly didn’t make it.

So excited about your channel growth! A note about chameleons. Once you get them set up- and you get things automated, (timed lights, and a good ,GOOD misting system) They're a lot easier. If you put in the money first, you're life will be much easier and they are a delight! But they are fragile ....they can just up and get sick and die on you even if you do everything right. Get a good one from a good breeder.

Chameleon’s vary by species in difficulty, they all unfortunately don’t live that long. The two I’ve owned both around 5 years. Jackson’s is definitely the easiest of the group, they require mostly normal room humidity and temperature, with a day time basking spot and UVB light. They all require a drip system, which is cheap and easy. I’ve also own a Carpet which is an amazing Chameleon but not for beginners with misting systems and glass enclosure with lush vegetation needs. Carpet is the only chameleon that can live in glass enclosures, they are also small and mostly friendly, Jackson’s are typically friendly also just much hardier, easier to keep and more standard chameleon size. My brother tried a veiled chameleon it was very difficult and not friendly at all. It didn’t eat out of a feeder cup like my two and required higher humidity with a screen enclosure, which was very difficult. His only lived a little over 3 years.

What are your thoughts on beginners owning say, intermediate reptiles if they've put in a ton of time and effort to learning all the regular things you need to know for reptiles already? I suppose it worked out with you and your beardie.

Agree with everything you said on the topic of big reptiles. It doesn’t mean a beginner can’t have one (they’d have to do a fucking lot of research but it’s still possible with effort and dedication), but even some non beginners need to take these things into consideration.

OK ....... I had an Iguana and it wasn't bad at all. One thing is I did have a lot of woodworking tools so I build him a big enclosure and put the lights it myself. After that, he was low maintenance. I fed him monkey chow soaked in water, some veggies and the special power that you get for reptiles. I never had to buy crickets, worms and stuff which was the main reason I bought him. I am also FAR from an expert. This was my first and only lizard ever. I kept him for a few years and then donated him to a school. IMHO most of the work is up front. However maybe I just got lucky.

I got a my first snake, a BRB about a year ago, after a LOT of research. I must disagree with you about this spicies being in this list. The secret of maintaining high humidity levels is pretty simple- just block the terrarium ceiling because the humidity goes out vertically (water just evaporates through) and most of the side air nets- to a kind of minimal air flow rates. They dont really need high airflow. With those conditions i can spray the surface two or three times a week.

Nice video with good information! I hope some newcomers to the reptile hobby get the chance to see it. You probably folded these into your 'big stuff' category, but it makes me crazy to see how commonly available baby Nile Monitors are, and how cheap they are. The babies are also cute, so all of that is a bad combination for an animal that is a terrible candidate for a beginner pet. It might be interesting to do a video on how you can't always trust online information. Beginners get told to "do your research" but there's a ton of contradictory and just plain bad info out there. Anyway, thanks again. I've subscribed and have been enjoying your content so far.

I rescued a bearded dragon from severe neglect. So she managed to keep it alive on pellets and occasional crickets. Anyways this girl moved out & left the animal in this party house and I was at the party seen the poor guy noticed his enclosure was way to small (10 gallon) and he was skinny no water so the next day called my friend and she loves animals this was her roomates animal so I convinced her that even if she came back the animal was being neglected. So I brought this guy home did a TON of research and I was horrified when I learned how much he was denied. I was shocked to know he was still alive. So first thing went to Walmart bought the biggest plastic long bin I could find my dad made the screen top out of wood and chicken wire. Got him a lamp fresh veggies and an assortment of grubs new bedding things to climb on big water dish basking rocks. I mean this guy did a 180 in a few months. I loved his personality to it was so spunky well my mother didn’t want me to have any reptiles sadly so I sold him on Craigslist for $40 I made sure to give them a detailed care guide I also detailed in the ad as well. The family that bought him really wanted a bearded dragon but couldn’t afford to buy one at petsmart and the whole set up (it can be $100+) so they where thrilled to get the entire setup and the animal for $40. Long story short bearded dragons are a lot of work. You got give them fresh veggies everyday grub once or twice a week and there is a lot more and petsmart try’s to make it as simple as pellets and crickets and a $100 tank set up which you could easily save money buying your setup anywhere but at petsmart

I think the Savannah monitor should have been on here, because they have the same issues as the iguana. They're sold really small, really cheap and a beginner probably won't know how big or aggressive they tend to be
