The lady from the Pru told me when I was 20 that I should aim to retire by 55. I was astounded to say the least. Then she showed me a chart produced by their actuaries of male average age of death related to their retirement age and it was shocking. I am now 71 and( I think) in fine active fettle. I did finish at 55 and was berated by 2 colleagues for finishing so young. One died 6 months after I finished at 60 and the other passed last year at 86 too tired to do anything but watch television all day when he retired at 74 earning £50K a year from his enormous pension fund which the Government will now benefit from. I mourn them both deeply.Early retirement would have changed their happiness and prospects so much. NOW is the only time you own!

Congratulations, but every situation is different. Nobody should be listening to these blanket size approaches.

Retired at 49 because I could afford to . Most will leave it to late they carnt buy time back with big pensions .They will run out of time before they run out of money.

That's all well and good, but how do you _know_ you have enough money for the rest of your life?

You don't...But nothing in life is a certainty. Calculate your net worth including your house. Calculate your outgoings. Factor in a reasonable age of death based on your parents and lifestyle. It is not an exact science. Running out of cash is far less painful than running out of life!

That can be a worry. Talk to a financial planner.

die with Zero. that is the goal. I won't have a big pension. Only SS and whatever I can get working part time or gig work when I need extra. I have worked 40 years. I am tired of the game. I turn 62 in a year and I am going to quit.
