@@commentsectionsexsymbol6011 you have no idea what you’re talking about. I also already covered the point you just made. Marc died in an avalanche, that has nothing to do with skill. He wasn’t even free solo’ing when he died. That’s just the nature of the mountains. Alex has never even attempted the stuff Marc was doing at 20 years old. And no , torre eggar was 3 el caps , Marc also did his ascent in winter , which had never been done before. Alex doesn’t climb in winter. He climbs one fucking mountain in the US over and over.

That may be, but the nose that he has soloed many times and is a signature climb for him is 5.9 C2 The corckscrew is 5.10d A1. The latter is literally a whole other level. Now those grades don't mean much in solo style, for instance the d is the horror factor when rope protected, doesn't really apply. We don't know if either did tons of harder moves just to speed themselves along, or to avoid potentially manky aid moves where a solid hand jam existed... Patagonia is orders of magnatude worse in just about every way as far as weather, remoteness, impossibility of rescue, quality of medical aid, familiarity, etc... etc... Yosemite is probably the best rock climbing venue in the word for easy of access, short approaches, long spells of great weather, normally not much ice or snow even in the winter, etc... etc... In the day Yosemite was where people went to train for Cerro Torre, and they often didn't succeed.

what's the difference between 5.9 and 5.10? On the vids I've seen, Honnold looks about 1000 feet up on a vertical cliff face with hardly anything to grab onto. I can't imagine it getting much harder. its mind blowing.
@laronlemon2723

Think of it like going through school. Most people get a High School Diploma(5.10 to 5.12). Alex Honnold has a bachelors degree(5.13), and most elite climbers have a masters (5.14)or PHD (5.15).
@Foxfool228
7 жыл бұрын
Perhaps I'm a bit late with this response, but the "d" in 5.10d is more of a nuanced way of marking difficulty. Easier than 5.11a but harder than 5.10c. The difference between C2 and A1 is more of a matter of the style of aid climbing. "C" stands for clean aid, where the protective gear doesn't typically damage the rock, whereas "A" may indicate a need for pitons which can leave scars in the rock. Additionally, the Nose is only 5.9 if the hardest pitches are aid climbed. It's 5.14a/b (Changing Corners pitch) otherwise. No one has ever free solo'd the Nose, but there are rope solos! Spot on with Patagonia being worse on all of those other factors though! Cheers.

Ah, no. Down climbing the same route is exceedingly rare: walk down the easy side where possible, as it probably isn't on sea stacks and Cerro Torre. Rappel down, which is anchoring your rope and using simple mechanical brakes to slide down it. On very technical ground rappelling which is technically undemanding as far as the sliding down the rope part is concerned is a real bear in other respects. A lot of the time descents are where people get killed. They are tired; the weather closes in; the descents are often tricky as far as route finding; occur at night; they didn't spend as much time preparing for the descent as they did the climb. A classic on British crag climbs is to slide off the top of the cliff on grass.
