Sure, from Doss perspective, and viewers (which is still watching it from Doss perspective most of the time), it's easy to just say "Yeah, that Sergeant was a prick", but from general point of view imo he did a good job. He did what he was meant to do. Filter the weak. That was the first time he figured that Doss wasn't weak and gave him a chance. Let's assume that Doss isn't Doss, but someone other with the same conviction, but without such massive balls. It would hurt the unit (probably). The only people who did something bad during training were those who attacked him at night and those who were responsible for putting Doss to trial. What I don't understand is, he's wanting to be a medic for his company, and they don't understand that they need a medic for when they are in combat!! In my company when I was in we had 12 medics!!

well there you go, first time in history the US military started giving preferential treatment to individuals on the basis of their religious beliefs. End of the day, it wasn't that big of a deal, dude wants to be a medic and be unarmed, then why the hell not.. I guess people were a lot more conservative in the 40's

It's very accurate. In fact they even left out some of his achievements from the movie to make the story more believable.

I would hate to be in the army... I mean it could happen though. I've dabbled so much in HAM radio and signals. As a base station it's nice, you operate in a secure base and have massive amounts of power and equipment, but as a walking portable radio, you aren't too good for fighting. You're basically a walking cell phone and it's kinda funny. I have a feeling things would be hell for me though. Weighing only 105lbs at 5'6", I'm tiny and small, and could probably keep up in boot camp, but my issue is the bullying. I don't fear the hard work or shouting, or the bootcamp/training, those are more adventurous and I've always had more energy than I could contain. But the fact I'm this skinny, balding nerd with crooked teeth and wrists thinner than paper. People play off those insecurities in the army or navy, and I'm not the manliest nor the strongest mentally, however I am pretty geeky/nerdy. I hope if ever the time comes and I need to serve for my country, I hope that I can at least be accepted by those I work with, or at least classed and grouped with the nerds... B)

3:47 3:56 The surprise on all their faces just shows how much their hatred for him turned into genuine respect. Amazing display of character. I don't think I can ever do with he did if I were in his position. A heart of gold. All I pray God leads to this path ❤

That look he gave him at @2:12 is a death stare. People can really be stingy and ugly, yet some like Desmond prevail and stay true regardless of the punishment because he wants to serve his country. Truly a great warrior that didn't need a weapon. Tough love comes from Drill Sergeants and Drill Instructors, but you would rarely hear any soldier, Marine, Sailor, Airman say they wouldn't stand up for them in the end.

Funniest line in this movie was Sarge yelling in Smitty's face: "You got some shit on your mind?" Funny lines needed because this movie was so moving and grim so much.

Something those soldiers don't realize, is that the medic would only be shooting until someone gets shot. And in the pacific theater that might be 10 seconds into a firefight. And that medic is going to put down his gun to treat that guy which could take hours to do properly, and minute after minute more men will be getting hurt. Long story short, if the medic ain't willing to shoot, it's not hurting the squad much because that medic will only be a rifleman for thebfirst minute of a days worth of battle.

the main issue is that medics carry guns in self defence and the defence of those they are saving. without a gun, they can just be shot.
