I can't help feeling that a miss is being applied in situations where there is no reasonable expectation that the ball on will be hit other than by luck, even for players at this level. To my mind, it's not a miss just because hitting the ball on is not impossible.

If, in the ref's opinion, the player did not make "the best possible attempt," then a miss will be called. Peoples opinions often differ.
@doctormarazanvose4373

the rule was brought in originally because players took advantage by fouling in a way that left their opponent with no opening shot on returning to the table. The miss rule is cast in stone so as to not be subjective. If players had been honest and tried their best at all times the rule would never have been created but that's humans for you.

Yeah, he seems to be trying too hard to make it with “inch purrfect” placement rather than just making contact. Seems like a pretty straight forward shot. Down by enough points that several misses leave him in a spot with snookers required. He failed game theory because instead of forcing opponent to miss, he lost on his own.

I think the Wilson Dunn snooker is possible, albeit just barely so. It's impossible to judge it perfectly, but the one cushion escape, just missing the brown before hitting the rail, should be able to hit the red.

@vez3834

Follow the shadow of the red ball. The ball doesn't follow the edge, you can see the shadow keep going further into the wall. The phenomenon is interesting though. I think it has at least three parts: Angle of the camera, shape of the camera lens and finally the shape of walls. Angle makes it quite difficult to follow the straight lines. It's both low and close to the same direction as where the red goes at first. The curvature of the lens might be causing some distortion. Look up "fish-eye lens" online. And finally the shape of the walls. The ball's top half is where the touch happens. (I assume the shape of the wall is so that the force vector after collision points down. This is so that the balls wouldn't fly off the table)
@X22GJP

1:38 I think you'll find that it is perfectly possible. Loads of room between cushion and brown, just need to get the correct spin and angle. Difficult, yes, but not impossible.

I believe one of the standard rules of snooker is that, if it's deemed impossible to make a legal shot, a rerack is required. I've never seen a ref enforce this even though I've seen quite a few snookers that are impossible to escape.
@WarpRulez
Жыл бұрын
I never understood why the referees judge "foul and miss" on near-impossible snookers. If I understand correctly, a "foul and a miss" (as opposed to just a "foul") is judged when the referee estimates that the player could have made the shot but didn't do a best possible attempt. Quite clearly all these players do their absolute best to get out of the snooker. How can the referee judge that they didn't?
@juicedgoose

The miss rule forces the players to make the best possible attempt, rather than just fouling and leaving their opponent in a bad situation. If you can't see why the rule was implemented, you haven't played much snooker.

@@castleanthrax1833 I should have been clearer. I'm talking about the miss rule non-application when a player requires a snooker or when it's an impossible snooker. I believe that if you do get unbeatable snooker then you should be considered to have won the frame. That's the whole point of the game. Not calling a miss on certain snookers is mind boggling and lowering the value of snookers.
