33 years ago today!!! What a time this was in Charleston, SC circa 1989! I was 5 and remember sleeping through the storm, waking up and seeing several trees down around my Aunt's house we evacuated to in Jedburg,SC...WELL inland! The eye passed over us it was so damn big! It was a Catergory 1 hurricane still when it went over Charlotte! Bad Ass Hugo!!

That storm is famous in Charlotte NC. It was the first time they had hurricane force winds. Apparently only very strong hurricanes can make it there and only if they take the exact path inland through SC that Hugo took. Also, after it left everything smelled like the sea. That’s crazy considering Charlotte is 235 miles in straight line distance from the Atlantic Ocean. Charlotte is generally considered one of the safest cities in the US from natural disasters including hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes.

Hurricane Hugo devastated my area in NC and the Blue Ridge Mountains. When we bought our vacation place in Hillsville, VA about 10 years ago, I vividly remember my dad replacing the flooring and there being silt and dirt underneath it from the river flooding. You might think “that’s not too bad”, but that same silt was behind all the light switch covers, too. My grandparents owned a condo/apartment in Cherry Grove, North Myrtle Beach for a long time (they sold it this past February) and I remember them telling me that Hugo pulled the entire condominium building off it’s foundation, and the community swimming pool was ripped out of the ground and washed out into the surf. Like it was literally on the beach after the storm passed.

@Andhika Bagas Wirasatya Yeah, most of them pales in comparison in terms of impact though, which is why only Iniki, Pauline, and Patricia got in the list. Would've put Kenna (2002), Manuel (2013), and Odile (2014) if there aren't that many damaging atlantic hurricanes.

I was 20 miles south of Charlotte, the eye passed right over us, I remember going outside during the eye looking at all the downed trees and tool sheds from neighbors in our yard.. I also remember my Dad telling us that was only the first half. I was only 9 and 33 years later that's still the scariest storm I've ever experienced. We did not prepare because we were 165 miles inland, we had no power for 5 days and neighbors got water from our pool to flush toilets. It destroyed our favorite vacation spot Garden City, we rode down a week after the storm and it was a sight beyond imagination, houses in the middle of the road, the water line from the storm surge almost to the 2nd floor at Sam's Corner. Poor Garden City got it pretty bad from Ian now.

Hugo was a phenomenon. Usually these things go through florida first, move up along through it and georgia and gets broken up and dampered by the Blue Ridge Mountains, but since it skirted Florida and Georgia, it was able to remain fed up the coast and went straight into the carolinas from the shoreline
