The wonderful big bell is announcing the solemn entrance into the time of Lent, which marks penance and conversion. The chimes ring out during the passage between Tuesday and Wednesday, passing midnight to mark the end of carnival. The solemn chimes mark a very ancient tradition spread throughout Christendom, born in the Middle Ages during the period of maximum cultural and artistic expansion.

The first important church in Monza was built in 595 by Queen Teodolinda, used as the palatine chapel of the royal palace, the summer residence of the Lombard court. Rebuilt in the 14th century, the central church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist was transformed from Romanesque to Gothic, becoming one of the most beautiful and richest churches in the world. The new bell tower was built between 1592 and 1606, when it reached its current height of eighty metres. Five bells were placed inside the belfry, blessed by Archbishop Federico Borromeo in 1628. The seventeenth-century bells were destroyed in the devastating fire of 1740 and were replaced in 1741 with a new concert of eight bells, considered among the most beautiful in Italy. The concert is pitched in the scale of A major, with a total weight of 112 quintals of bronze.
Over the centuries, the basilica was endowed with gold and silver ornaments, chosen for the baptism of heirs to the throne and used for the coronation of Roman emperors. The 15th century Chapel of Theodolinda is an incredible masterpiece, visited by the whole world because it houses the famous Iron Crown, which contains one of the nails with which Jesus Christ was crucified.
