Its baffling to see how his forehand has changed. Nowadays he does not produce any damage with his former best weapon. I remember him playinh against Djokovic and Nadal dominanting with the forehand. It seems to me he is scared of getting injured again on the wrist, and that is why he is not confident. The wrist is very delicate and he used to twist it a lot on his strokes. A critical injury for a tennis player.
@davidyakubovitz2076
Жыл бұрын
the issue is his forehand technique was always basic. what elevated it to world class was his insane racket speed and ability to red line his power for an entire match. it could be the wrist, but I just think hes past his prime. his style was so physically demanding and I think he just can no longer physically get to that level. ive watched a lot of thiem matches this year and he literally can't hit 2-3 rally forehands in a row without making an error. he can't hit basic forehands now its really sad. what frustrates me is what is he working on? its the same story match after match and I see zero change. he needs to fundamentally change his forehand or somehow regain his insane physicality and racket speed/power. when I watch him now he just massages the ball off the forehand and tries to hit it solid, and that will never work.
@ManagerMia

@@davidyakubovitz2076 it's the wrist, you see go for it sometimes like he use to, and the ball would sail long, miles long.....just not got that racket head speed to whip the ball back down with the RPMS.......however I have seen shades of it coming on some forehands, so it's not yet a foregone conclusion, but the forehand of 2017 (check the nadal semi final, OMG the power and pace of that thiem forehand) and that era is gone forever. People gush on about Carlos forehand now, but Thiem rocking that forehand now would be right up there also....

His wrist might not be as strong as it was before and/or it could be susceptible to re-injury. I popped a tendon in my wrist while serving in a tournament back in my college days. My wrist still clicks in the spot where I popped that tendon and I'm in my late 50s. Over the years, I had to be careful not to re-injure it in the same place.

Dominic Thiem got something he didn't really deserve - the US Open 2020. That trophy belonged to Djokovic, but it was stolen from him because of the Hollywood acting skills of the line judge, a Federer fan. The judge, whose duty is to watch where the balls are flying, did not see one slow ball that hit her inadvertently, and then acted "great pain" so that Novak would be disqualified (and would hopefully stay behind Federer with the number of GS, thought the line judge). Novak was in great shape and would have won the tournament. Since US Open 2020, the curse has followed Thiem.

Pretty easy to answer, his forehand isn’t as big anymore due to the wrist injury. Combine that with him still playing super deep in the court. He simply can’t hit through anybody like he used too. He either needs to get his ball speed back or play closer to the baseline and take time away. His confidence is also shot from all the losing. He should pull an Agassi circa 1997 and go down to the challenger level for awhile and get some wins and work on things.

Thiem just sacked Massu as coach. In the past 2 years he literally changed everything in his team to get back to his old form, but without success. IMO the problem is he himself. He always talks about how important his family and friends are and the ones who are with him though he's turning his back towards them. One of his former mental coaches did an interview recently where he directly blamed Thiem for being to passive, accepting his faith instead of fighting back and changing his surroundings on purpose to force a change when probably all he needs to do is step back and start from the ground up again with the help of those that helped him before. His relation to Lili Paul-Roncalli also does not seem to be that fruitful. He can be seen regularly at events off the court like F1 races, soccer matches or what not. Sure, dropping out in R1 means he has a lot more time now though IMO his focus is now split among various things and tennis does not seem to be his #1 priority. And he's not getting younger. Now there are plenty more young and aspiring talents on the tour that can put up the same if not already more force in the ball than Thiem could in his best years. The funny thing is, I remember the discussion Nole once started to distribute the price money a bit more "fair" so that challengers and first round players get a bit more and Thiem was the one stating that all those not in the Top 40 are basically just to lazy. Now that Thiem has to hope for wildcards for most of the tournaments he wants to participate in I wonder if his view is still the same. While it hurts to watch him play like this, he's the only one to blame here and he's the only one who can drag him out of his misery and liturgy. At times it now seems he's blaming everyone and everything but himself. And I don't expect him to enter any major or ATP 500/1000 soonish without any wildcard for the foreseeable future

Did the wrist ever heal completely, was there a re-injury. It could be due to the wrist that he is struggling, not that he has difficulty developing confidence. He simply is not able to go for the shots like he used to pre-injury. It seems that he is playing conservatively now. If he is not able to produce those explosive shots, then he can't replicate his "US Open grand slam win" level play. His game was always based on groundstroke power and explosiveness. Unfortunately he copped a terrible injury. Also, if he fears reinjuring the wrist, then that is psychological, and that means he may never get back to that elite level again.

Without being a tennis player you wouldn’t understand what happened to Dominic. Thiem’s one handed backhand is the reason he’s not doing so well. Dominic over extended himself on the backhand wearing out his body. One handed backhands are already more difficult to hit due to one handedness but it takes developing the off hand like the actor in M. Night Shyamalan’s film the lady in the water who had a bulging arm from carrying a weight around all the time. Dom could use a bulging left arm and developed left side to pull his spine back into alignment with his developed right side.

Yes, sounds VERY scientific and grounded in reality. Also doesn't explain why someone like Wawrinka and other 1HBH players aren't dealing with the same issue. Or why Nadal's massive left arm isn't magically causing this spine misalignment.

Thiem should make a step back to ITF and smaller Tournaments. He lost in South America in the first rounds on Clay.

Sadly, Theim's lost his Tennis IQ & Game Sense as well. A player who lost both of these can never overcome from the dip.

Dominic Thiem is the perfect talent example of not “having the right support partner” to strengthen his career and tennis endeavor. He’s a talent that should of, at least, have had 5 grand slams or so? But his choice in coupling with a super model may have robbed him of 50 million dollars or so in endorsements and winnings? Should he have stayed in practice when someone said: “Would you please take me to Hawaii on vacation, dear?” Dominic: “But baby, I have the Wimbledon tournament coming up in a month?” Girlfriend: “We’ll only be gone for 12 days total. 18 days of practice is more than sufficient for a pro like you” Dominic: “Okay dear, let me see what flights I may book?”

His fitness and focus are the most overrated qualities. The guy never beat the best of the best at their best and had too many losses against much weaker players. Hell, in grand slams, even when they didn't play their best on clay and hard courts, Djokovic and Nadal would beat him. He also doesn't play well on grass. The only two reasons why he won the US Open in 2020 were because Djokovic got disqualified and Zverev feared victory even more than Thiem himself. It was an awfully boring, tiring match, unworthy of a final. They were stiff from the beginning till the end. I remember when he broke up with his girlfriend, Kristina Mladenovic. Supposedly it was about focusing even more on his career and winning big titles. It's funny how after the split everything fell apart and he is no longer considered a big name to beat by any other player. I'd like to see him recover, but it seems unlikely. I miss Nishikori too, great guy.

Just makes Fed, Nadal, Djokovic run that much more special. They've faced injuries, but have managed to put it back together. They've been there 15+ years. The rest of the gen, was in and out or done. I guess Dom is that for the next gen, and with Carlito and the rest of these young guys coming in hot I don't see him coming anywhere close to top 20 at the age of 29.

A wrist injury can do a lot of damage to a great players career. Who knows what Delpotro could have done if he hadn't injured his. That being said, having watched Thiem since a junior, you cannot ignore the coach he parted ways with. Had an ugly falling out with his long time coach the end of 2020, Mid 2021 the serious wrist injury. 2022,the ranking starts to slide. What many don't realize is a great coach cannot only help you when you're healthy, rising and confident. An exceptional coach knows your game inside out. He/She can see and fix the technical flaws that can be hampered from an injury. You don't let a good coach go when you're at the top of your career. I personally think a Cahill or Lendl could turn this ship around, certainly Bresnik could . Good luck to him, he's an amazing talent and one of the most enjoyable to watch.

Injuries have destroyed the careers of many great athletes. Thiem was set to become a dominant superstar. All the ability in the world. I doubt he'll ever be the same but I hope I'm wrong. The really young guys on the tour seem to have elevated the game from the days of Djokovic, Nadal and Federer. Hard to believe but here we are.

I feel sad for Domi, such an incredible talent cut short. But I wouldn't call his life a tragedy. I get it, it's click bait. But, ya know, kids being orphaned during a war and starving is a tragedy. Domi won a slam and still enjoys playing tennis and does it on the pro tour. There's life outside of tennis.

Until he strengthens his wrist he will not win. That healing is what separated himself from the pack. He needs to find a good sports medicine doctor. If it takes a full year then take it. He’s the most attractive tennis player in every way I hope he makes a come back

His biggest downfall was his wrist rehab, using HOT CANDLEWAX on the skin that's supposedly speeds up recovery... NO. Hot = inflammation! Cold = GOOD. He needs to SUE THAT DOCTOR who told him to use hot candlewax. He should've iced that wrist again and again and again.
