My friend won a significant amount in a lottery and in the 5 years since he has doubled the value of that prize. He spent carefully like he did before he won the lottery and used a very trusted and excellent financial advisor who paid him a "salary" from the interest earned--he never touched the original lottery winnings. And most importantly he learned how to say NO to family members/charities etc. He had a simple speech for charities: "I have given to 2 charities most of my life...and unfortunately you are NOT one of them and that isn't going to change" If they asked who those charities were he told them it wasn't any of their business--and stopped the requests quite quickly

His cars not only depreciated, but had to be insured, registered, maintained... cha-ching! 13. He could never have “enough.” 14. He had no impulse control; thus he could not master his money because he had no discipline over himself. 15. He chose the wrong partner, twice. Divorce and spouses with bottomless purses are twin devourers of wealth. 16. His attempts to invest carried too much risk; since he didn’t know what he was doing, he should’ve tucked his funds away in some simple, S&P 500 funds. Plain, boring, and would have yielded about $190,000 a month, for LIFE. 17. Most people don’t make that in a YEAR. He could’ve covered basic bills, maintenance on a nice but more modest home, and had enough left over for fancy dinners and a monthly international trip. LET ME SAY THAT AGAIN Basic bills, like phone, car, electricity, gym membership? COVERED. Home maintenance? COVERED. Fees for his lawyer/advisor? COVERED. Let’s be generous and say all that would take 10k of his monthly allowance. It wouldn’t, but let’s say it did. That’s still 75k left. He could fly first class to anywhere on the planet and stay in a nice hotel for a week, and STILL have money left over at the end of the month that he could use to give food to a local shelter or something. He had the dream life right there, but his absolute lack of impulse control and his drug addiction tanked it.

Most lottery winners stay true to the type of people they have always been. Had a friend win Missouri lottery and all he wanted was a really nice truck which he bought. His house is a total dump in a bad hood. I've always been good with what little money I've had. I'll never change. This guy made bad decisions before winning so he's going to make them with winnings too.

I knew this guy personally. I actually worked for world solutions....the communications company he bought (and ran into the ground). It was sad watching him blow it all. He would fly up to the office, brag about his Versace suit, and always have an entourage. At the peak of his habit, he was blowing over $5000 a day, just on HIS drugs. That's not counting what his wife snorted up her nose or ran up her arm. It was your classic tale of poor man strikes it rich, goes broke, and dies a lonely addict. I will always believe his wife, Shawna, was the reason for his relapse and downfall. She bled him dry. She was the most sorry excuse for a human being I've ever seen. So take heed to such a story and just know, disaster and failure are always waiting just around the corner.....So always be vigilant. And handle your business. Oh, and I almost forgot: NEVER live above your raisings.

He would also show me his cars, one of which was a Shelby Series 1. This documentary is very accurate with the facts. After driving the Hummer golf cart of the gold course the HOA banned it from the community. He also had too many cars, and would constantly get citations for parking them on the street. His driveway was cluttered with cars. After his home was foreclosed we did a walk through and oh my God! The home was trashed! His mattress had blood stains, needless all over the house, holes in the wall; it was deplorable. It's sad the way things went for him, he was a nice guy.

He was. His daughter, Tiffany Edwards, said in an interview that her father wasn't sad about going broke because his motto was that you only live once, so he believed in enjoying his life. And although I don't entirely disagree, this belief is typically held in people who are the most reckless and least responsible. Had he listened to his advisors and didn't spend so lavishly reckless, then he would not had ended up homeless and would have had money to pay for his medical expenses. $85,000 A MONTH FOR LIFE?!? Who couldn't live off of that? I sort of felt bad for the guy, but he unfortunately bought ill misfortune onto himself because he didn't want to listen to a financial advisor who knew how to maintain his wealth.
