Looks great and really agree with being able to split lanes in a car as its 'killer app'. In heavy traffic, in terms of speed to your destination, a Smart and a Range Rover are essentially the same. It's the reason why I chose a scooter years ago when I would have preferred a Twizzy. The one problem I do wonder about is how easy in reality it will be to go into folded mode when you really need to. In my experience, the 'oh nuts, I need to squeeze through' moment usually happens when stationary, and then I doubt that I would have enough space to get to 6mph and spend the 2 seconds to fold in before getting to the gap. I haven't done the sums, but suspect the gap will be well into 'what is this muppet doing, I'm going to lay on the horn and call him lots of names' territory.

I find the notion of filtering in this vehicle an interesting topic - legality aside, certainly here in the UK, I feel motorbikes are happily accepted by car drivers when they filter through in busy traffic, or jump to the front of a queue at the lights, because of perceived difference in transport types and simply that us poor motorcyclists have to cope with being exposed to the elements. Ultimately I don’t think anyone really cares. But if a micro car driver was suddenly able to jump queues, or filter, then I strongly suspect there would be quite a lot of anger from fellow car drivers.
@jonathankeenan5163

I really hope this one works out. Basically I'll take anything that's a modern one or two seater car no bigger than the Smart. 111 miles with regen braking and DC fast charging sounds like a great road trip vehicle (assuming we're allowed to drive them on the M4 etc). If they could really do it for €16,000 and it actually comes to the UK that'd be great. I had a petrol Smart and miss it terribly, but the current electric one is way too expensive given the fact it has ancient tech in it (and thus lower range than Chinese counterparts). I'm really not interested in big cars, so I keep hoping this or a new Smart or the Microlino will make it to volume production. Since Lightyear and Arcimoto are both going the way of the dodo it looks like, I'll believe it when I see them on the roads. Fingers crossed and all that.

I was hoping Smart would keep making city cars and come back to the US but unfortunately it looks like they are now going to make cars that look like everyone else's with four doors and a larger footprint. I still hope they come back as I think it'll be easier to get parts/service but I don't think I'd buy one of the new designs because I am also not interested in big cars haha
@jonevansauthor
Жыл бұрын
@@CraigMayhem the new owners of the brand have vaguely said they might possibly maybe just about do a new 2 seater but given how far they've departed from the original concept I'll believe that when I'm sitting in mine. I say the tech is bad partly because the UI for the console has been reported as being a touch low end/out of date/rubbish. But mostly because the Chinese same size cars with the same form factor have better ranges which implies Mercedes don't know what they're doing considering they charged a lot more. I do think it's sufficient but the price is a problem at least in the UK. It should have been cheaper, or have better range for that price. I'd still take one if it were financially viable - my next best option that actually exists unlike the CityTransformer - is the Fiat 500 and that has two junk seats in the boot for no reason and is much longer. I haven't found anything else close in size that's being manufactured that is.

The micro car class (L6 and L7 in the EU) could really use some lobbying, as Jack said. Not just for financial incentives, but for parking spaces too. In bigger cities street parking will get more and more restricted as the street space is released for pedestrian use (which is a good thing). This dilutes the main benefit of this class, parallel parking. You don't need to park parallel in parking garages and you end up taking exactly the same space with a microcar as a regular car takes, with the same cost obviously. The layout should be designed with microcars in mind as well, letting them take advantage of their small size. Motorcycles are often neglected too in this regard.

I think back to the first gen RAV4 EV (1997 era), you didnt have an EV network. It would until post 2010 when more and more public chargers became a thing (first EV adopters had to plan. Even 20 years later, I get questions how much money its going to be to charge, like I’m stealing 10s of dollars of electricity with each charge). Like locally I'm fighting a city to turn over their very own public charging infrastructure to be charging for the electricity that you use than some luxury parking spot of a fix dollar amount per hour. Thinking forward, this kind of micro car will become increasingly more valuable as rules, manufacturing/buying incentives and transit infrastructure permits. When half of the ground floor a multi floor carpark has dedicated ebike and micro car parking, is a day the hummers, SUVs, pickup trucks, etc all need to do more socially to even park. as a cyclist, the idea of a 1m wide 400kg vehicle cruising at 50kmh down a cycle path sounds terrible. especially since cycle paths in many places in the US & Canada are where people go when they are not comfortable in bike lanes or streets - so lots of kids and inexperienced (and slower) riders. Just watching him drive into the bike lane got my dander up. It's like these things are designed specifically to take advantage of bike lanes, since a lot of highly congested urban streets are not wide enough that there will be a meter between slow moving vehicles. I don't have a solution though - Id rather see lots more of these than lots more of full size EVs.

@@dreid477 Just an idea… if you want to use the bike lane, you must move like one. E.g. limit the speed to 20 km/h

I have a small family and an MG5 estate. We now need a second car and had I not vowed to never buy another ICE car, we'd be getting a cheap old banger for one of use to nip to work ona daily basis. But with a commitment to EVs, that second car is unaffordable. We're thinking about leasing an a citreon ami. And that's where I think these micro cars will have an advantage, in forfilling that second car run around. Can't wait to pick up a second hand one in the future!

It would be even more cool if the whole body got wider with sliding floor and roof panels. This might allow you more comfort, or to actually get a second person in the back, when you need that more than you need the ability to scoot through narrow places.

The last time I was thrilled about a car was the smart (and then the smart Roadster). Now again - how genius this is. 😃 And a proof that a micro car can look really cool, after the Twizzy (never an option because of the doors). Apropos doors: This one doesn‘t need ultimatively scissor doors, as you don‘t want to park that narrow next to other cars like you did, because they will bump your car when they try to leave their parking position.

Front door on the car would be brilliant. Imagine standing up and walking out. The front of the car sliding up and over the roof

Definitely microcars should play a part in the future in cities. I worry about safety crash tests on these micro cars, and maybe their regulations should state. If not already, it should only be driven in cities, not on a road be rude or motorways due to speed and safety concerns.

Well, people are allowed on motorways with MCs (but it's absolutely way more dangreous to ride one).

One negative to have it always parked slimmed down is that if there are strong winds it will be a lot easier to flip over

If you make it able to transform into a lawn mower, it would absolutely smash sales records in the USA.

I have to agree with you about creature comforts. I considered a Renault Twizzy, but I want proper doors and heating. It's okay for a hot dry country, but that's not the UK for half the year.

The solution for traffic is to redesign the cities without cars and with simple rail tubes and subways and instead of all of those wasted spaces as roads using those areas for leisure and recreation.

Difference between 1 meter and 1.4 is not what will sell this car. But difference between $30K adn $16K might.

Portsmouth where I live was designed around push bikes and it shows in the lack of parking in nearly every road.

So, what's the kerb weight (which I see they do *not* give on their website)? The L7 classification limit of 400kg excludes the battery, so with a 110 mile range I guess it's closer to a car in weight than a motorbike, still less a bicycle or e-bike or mobility carriage. With that said, good to see more micro-cars coming onto the market.

Having asked City Transporter over e-mail, the kerb weight with battery is about 590 kg, so about: * 3/4 the kerb weight of the Smart fortwo (W451, at 770 kg). * 2.6x the weight of the heaviest enclosed mobility scooter I could find (the SCOOTERPAC Cabin Car MK 2 PLUS, at 222 kg).

With scissor doors, 50% more range, and at 50% of the price, and it will sell well. I'd also forgo some of those 'premium' features, with no qualms. The halving of the price can be achieved by means of a government incentive grant. The claimed range is too small for comfort, especially if it's really only 50 or 60 miles in cold weather.

Now I’m just imagining if it had auto parking and auto _unparking_ that way in a parking lot (not so much a highway) you could just get the car to pull out while you get in and go, and park even closer together as a result. We actually park right next to each other in our movers at the the end of the day at work because there is no doors so even if you aren’t at the end or beginning of the parking line you can just walk through the standing ( ‘seating’) areas of the movers beside you to get out.

A micro car with genuine 100 mile range would definitely suit us in the Lake District, as long as it could take two adults and our backpacks. The shape shift feature is clever for urban parking I think, but I suspect that nipping to the front of a queue of cars in (say) London or Paris would soon result in serious bovver ... so not convinced that is its key selling point.

Hope they can bring this to India.. ! best in City traffic. Tata Tiago the cheapest popular EV model as of now 4/5 seater. costs around 12000 euro in India.
