I support Australia having its own flag however the colours clash on this design and it suffers from the problem of dividing Australians into 3 groups. Even according to the explanation given in this video, the background colours represent different groups of people. So it is a divisive design. No divisive flag can suitably represent any nation which is supposed to be united.

Fun facts: The only British Overseas Territory flag that doesn't have the Union flag is Gibraltar! The flag was adopted in November 1982 and is based on Gibraltar's coat of arms, granted by Royal Warrant from Queen Isabella I of Castile in July 1502! The castle represents its status as a strategic fortress, while the key represents Gibraltar being the key to the Mediterranean. And while Anguilla's flag has the Union flag, the shield on the flag is based off the Three Dolphins Flag during the brief time that Anguilla was its own country called the Republic of Anguilla in the 1960s (basically Anguilla kicked out St Kitts police and voted to leave St Kitts to be their own colony, then voted to become a republic, and finally the UK sent 300 troops). I definitely agree that the Seychelles flag stands out. That, Kiribati, Bhutan, Kazakhstan, and Barbados are my top five favorite country flags. The oblique bands of the Seychelles flag symbolize a dynamic new country moving into the future. Blue depicts the sky and the sea that surrounds the islands, yellow symbolizes the sun, red symbolizes the people and their determination to work for the future in unity and love, white symbolizes social justice and harmony, and finally the green depicts the land and natural environment that makes the Seychelles famous.

Great thought went into the flag and we like how the design can be changed around for the shield idea and other official flags. But we also think there are a number of issues. 1. The black and blue have very poor contrast. 2. Changing the Commonwealth Star to 8 points means the flag has three different star designs (5, 7 and 8 pointed stars) and this makes the flag more complicated and confusing. 3. The stolen land symbolism is highly divisive. 4. It doesn't have a canton but the upper hoist is still the most prominent part of the flag and therefore the Aboriginal placement still gives them superiority over the other two groups.
@tripleunionflag
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words and thoughtful feedback on this flag design. We very much appreciate it. We would like to take this opportunity to address the concerns that you have raised about the design of the Triple Union Flag: 1. The decision to place black and blue fields next to each other is a compromise between ideal flag design, simplicity and recognisability. While it is not ideal to place these colours next to each other due to their tendency to appear too similar to the human eye, separating these three sectors with more design elements would overcomplicate the design. Alternatively, choosing different colours for the flag (such as a lighter blue) would undermine the clear connection between the Triple Union Flag and existing Australian flag designs. The chosen blue for this flag is Pantone 286C which is the brightest and most saturated blue colour of the standardised colour system. Provided manufacturing and printing protocols recognise the need for appropriate contrast between black and blue, and are tailored to achieve this, the choice of colours in this flag should not be a major concern. Indeed, several other official flags, such as the flag of South Sudan and the Torres Strait Islander Flag, are designed with blue and black fields placed next to each other. As a proof of concept, the Triple Union Flag has been manufactured with accurate reproduction of its colours. You can view images of this flag on our Instagram account: instagram.com/tripleunionflag/ 2. The design of the Triple Union Flag divides the Australian Flag into three distinct sectors to represent three different groups of people. Changing the number of points of the stars in this design, so that each sector contains unique stars, is a deliberate design choice to achieve this effect. There is only one difference between the stars of the current Australian Flag and the Triple Union Flag - a single point added to the largest star. This simple change can hardly be considered to be overcomplicating the design, especially given that the Union Jack, arguably more complicated on its own than any part of the design of the Triple Union Flag, is not a feature of this alternative Australian Flag design. 3. It should be noted that the symbolism of stolen Indigenous land is only one aspect and possible interpretation of the design of the Triple Union Flag. Nevertheless, this symbolism does not represent a controversial ideology but rather a historical fact. This is in contrast to the Union Jack in the canton of the current Australian Flag which is an intentionally designed symbol of the superior might of the British Empire. The oppression of First Nations people, and the dispossession of their lands, directly informs the reality of present-day Australia. The fact that acknowledgement of this reality is seen as divisive, while representations of colonial and post-colonial history remain unchallenged, suggests that it is an inadequate comprehension of Australian history, rather than the design of this flag, that is to blame for this divisiveness. 4. The design of the Triple Union Flag seeks to disrupt the form of the current Australian Flag which implies superiority of that which is contained in the canton on the upper hoist side of the flag. It is this flag design element, and not simply the placement of symbols in the upper hoist side of the flag, which has this specific connotation of superiority. As First Nations people are the descendants of the first Australians, the placement of the sector that represents them in the upper hoist side of the flag rightly grants them special recognition. However, it does not imply superiority - certainly not, at the very least, in the same way as the canton does in the current Australian Flag. The Triple Union Flag is a symbol of unity that is based on the convergence of three sectors at equal angles. Unlike the canton in the current Australian Flag, which can be easily replaced with another flag or symbol, the sectors of the Triple Union Flag are distinct yet related elements of a larger whole that only make sense within the form they create when combined together. No one sector in the Triple Union Flag can be considered to be superior to another.

It’s getting criticism because it’s an absolute disgrace of a design. It’s probably the only proposed Australian flag that somehow manages to piss off *every* ethnic group on the continent. @joseenriquejoson1994

@@KasabianFan44 Bro, that is misinterpretation of the flag, man. The flag tells the story of Australia's diverse people and how they came to be to form what is Australia today. Let's do a little experiment, alright? Try to draw a circle with its center in the intersection of the three sectors of the said flag, which would now become a pie, and each one of those sectors/slices represent one of the key chapters in Australia's history. Now, you try to take out one to two slices out of the graphical pie, you will then have the remaining slices not forming a complete circle at all, meaning to say, taking out any of the slices can mean that you don't sincerely acknowledge the key part of Australia's history
@KasabianFan44
Жыл бұрын
@@joseenriquejoson1994 Your “experiment” is the lamest analogy I have ever read mate. Do you even know what an _experiment_ is? You’re basically saying “the three *separate* slices of the history pie represent unity” - essentially repeating what the video said (thanks mate, but I was able to watch the video all by myself), but not providing any concrete explanation of how this unity is represented on the flag. They are just three random events, and you could argue that history itself is what brings them together - but this flag most certainly doesn’t. As for the “white border” thing - this doesn’t even make any sense. Three separate pieces are three separate pieces, whether they have a white line between them or not. This is nothing but your personal interpretation of what counts as “divisions”, and trying to pass off your opinion as a fact. Nice try bud. I sure hope you never become a journalist, because that’s just not how facts work. And to answer your question about the golden wattle flag - yes, it’s miles better compared to this abomination. It’s definitely not my favourite, but I’d still much rather have that as my flag. Hell, I would even rather keep the current flag than switch to this thing. Oh and the comment about “me being the only pissed one” is a hilarious lack of self-awareness. I’m pretty calm here, just expressing my personal opinion. My thoughts are that this flag is much too busy and complicated. The colours jar. I believe we need to follow the Canadian (and other modern) examples, which simply present one stylised symbol of the country. This symbol should bring no historical garbage with it, and be something new that all Australians can adopt and rally around. I also find it interesting that the conservatives among us who want to preserve “the flag our soldiers fought under” are in error. The yellow on the Timor-Leste flag (by the way: Timor comes from timur which means east in Malay and Leste means east in Portuguese, so its name is literally East East) not only represents the independence struggle but also the traces of colonialism in the nation's history, as in the yellow found on the Portuguese flag. And the Mauritanian flag originally didn't include red! Between 2011 and 2017, Mauritania and Jamaica were the only two country flags without red, white, or blue. But under a referendum which also abolished the Mauritanian senate, both the flag and the anthem were changed. The anthem was changed to...Diet 20th Century Fox. Libya also once had a flag without red, white, or blue but that changed in 2011. So it's just Jamaica now. Another iconic flag is the DPRK flag! The red of the flag symbolizes the bloodshed by the Korean patriots and the invincible might of the people firmly united to support the Republic. The white symbolizes one land, one language, one culture of a monoethnic country, which has lived in purity. And blue stands for the gallant visage of the people and symbolizes the spirit of the Korean people fighting for world peace and progress.

I admire the thought which has gone into this, but the most important thing that a flag must do is inspire a sense of patriotism, and I get no such feeling looking at this, it just looks like a bunch of different flags thrown together. Yes, the southern cross is absolutely required on any new flag for Australia, and yes, aboriginal representation must equally be a part of it. But the Australian Colours are green and gold, and a new flag must represent that. There are many ways that the aboriginal peoples can be represented without just sticking the aboriginal flag on the design, which is effectively what this does, despite the claiming that the red represents the red ensign. A new flag needs to harmonise the aboriginal people with the later settlers, and be something that everyone can stand behind. I think this keeps the divide between the peoples, just says they are both represented, which hardly seems much better.

It's honestly quite ingenious. Perhaps it could be reversed, with the star layout flipped so it's not a mirror image, with the Blue half along the mast shaft and the other quater's on the other side. This would prioritise the present and future of all Australians while keeping the intent of the design in place. The current flag should remain and be honoured until such time as there is a vote for Australia to become a Republic. The design is typical of the national flag of third world countries. The flag should not perpetuate the racial division of our population, we are one nation. The design should reflect the states and territories of Australia and include the Southern Cross.

As an Australian with indigenous blood, my father being Aboriginal, we Wiradjuri mob... I must say, this 'Triple union flag' is awful... I, myself as an Aboriginal man, I don't have an issue with the current flag, nor do anyone in my family, I feel, in my own opinion, changing the flag just leads to further segregation and division. But if this will help bring us ALL together so be it. You spent almost 10 mins in the video slagging off the meaning of having the UK in the canton and following old colonial traditions... But then you've kept the colours & put the sun and black up in the canton, no sense has been made... If you're going to get rid of the Union Jack all together you're going to have to get rid of the blue too. The blue isn't Australia's colour. Neither the blacks or the whites, it was a background expenditure of the Scottish St. Andrew Satire. The southern cross isn't unique to us either, I'd drop that too.. The only people the new flag needs to incorporate, is Aboriginal People of this Great Southern land and Australians, that's it. I'm not being racist but why would we need a flag to represent the world or immigrants? No one does it for us. Immigrants that come to Australia become Australians anyway through citizenship, the flag will be theirs once they become Australian. And, if they're born here to immigrant parents, then they're Australian by birth anyway... I'd propose a horizontal tricolour flag of 'Green, white and gold with a red sun and black beams in the centre', representing the indigenous peoples gathered around the sun at a meeting place. Any idea is an idea. Australia's colours are Green and Gold.... Green on top, Gold on the bottom, Separate them by white (white is a colour of Peace.. Peace between the two) Aboriginal colours are Black, Red & Yellow... Red & black sun in the centre of the flag ontop of the white background... Yellow and Gold are fairly similar the gold could represent both nationalities. Seeing as we are still a constitutional monarchy we keep the original Australian flag as a Royal flag only. Basically what Canada has done. Again, this is just my idea. No matter what change is done, you're not going to please everyone. Unless we all work together there is going to be division and segregation in this country and for and we can't keep blaming colonisation, something that happened over 200 years ago. We aren't a colony anymore, the whites here today aren't the ones that colonised and the blacks here today aren't the nomad wanderers the colonisers thought we were. It's upto us, today to start unifying as ONE. If you took the time to read this, thank you for reading and understanding.

Interesting proposal! My only problem with tricolours, whether vertical or horizontal, is that they've pretty much been done to death, and feel like pretty much the most common design a flag could possibly go for, AKA France, Germany, Ireland, Peru, Nigeria, Bolivia, the Netherlands, Russia, Belgium, Argentina, India, Italy, etc, etc, etc. That's why I personally like the Triple-Union Flag, it's more than just a couple of colourful rectangles with an emblem on it, but I admit the symbolism in your proposed design does indeed hold weight!

You might be missing the point of the video.

@@abarette_ Okay none of your points rectify any issues though... First point, the southern cross is on the flag of Canberra & I am more than aware of the meaning for it. I've stated that the southern cross is not unique to Australia... It is seen all over the southern hemisphere, it is even on the flag of Brazil, a world away. Next. Second point... By immigrants I'm not referring to Australians, if you read by comment properly, I'm not being rude in any way, or I'm not trying to be rude, but you trying to nitpick what I've stated and trying to pull it apart and then you're trying to make your own points with things I didn't state... Immigrants is referring to people coming here not people born here as Australians... I shall recap what I wrote seeing as you must have misread [3rd paragraph ". Immigrants that come to Australia become Australians anyway through citizenship, the flag will be theirs once they become Australian. And, if they're born here to immigrant parents, then they're Australian by birth anyway..."] Immigrants become Australian through citizenship, you move to a country you adopt that country, it's culture, it's flag why would you move to a country and expect that country to incorporate YOUR foreign culture or identity on it? No.. Next My idea was for a new flag not a recreation of the Aboriginal flag... Please again, reread what I wrote... Green and Gold are the colours of AUSTRALIA, not the Aboriginals.. So I suggested a flag using Australia's national colours including Red and Black used for the Aboriginals to create a new flag meshed with the TWO nationalities... Please, I didn't miss the point of the video, you just have a hard time reading and understanding... As my point is for Aboriginals and Australians. Within my text "Australians" doesn't just mean white people, it means any one born here as an Australian, I am not sorry about non Australian born individuals moving here as they can BECOME Australian through citizenship anyway, so why make a flag for them when they can adapt? I urge and encourage people to please read and understand peoples points and arguments before trying to reply with your own irrelevant remarks accusing the OC of not understanding... I would also like to add to the note that ANY form in which an Aboriginal even considers merging with Australians at all is one massive step towards a better Australia, you're lucky me, an Aboriginal Australian is even on board trying to reconcile a very horrific and tragic past... Thank you

In your mission to create a flag that ‘unites’ Australians, you have ironically done the complete opposite. The mere visual compartmentalisation of the groups represented on your design, is an immediate undeniable visual message of disunity, not to mention that your symbolism and overall design are unnecessarily complex. The doctrine that every group of people must be directly represented on a national flag or else the flag is invalid, is a fundamentally misguided thought. A national flag, particularly one belonging to a country as diverse and as vast as Australia, must use the most absolute abstract symbolism possible and must never incorporate the standards associated with specific sub-populations. A notable example of a flag done right is the national flag of India, which represents over 1.3 billion people, 700+ unique ethnicities, and over 100 recognised languages. The Indian flag is composed of only a tricolour of green, orange, and white with a blue wheel in the middle, yet it is an iconic and memorable design 🇮🇳. Another notable flag is that of China, which represents a population of over 1.4 billion people composed of many different unique ethnicities and languages, using only a field of red and 5 gold stars in the canton 🇨🇳. Perhaps the most notable is the flag of Russia, which represents 18% of the entire world’s landmass, over 110 million people, and 23 autonomous republics with only a tricolour of blue, white and red 🇷🇺.

Lol, this flag looks like pac-man is trying to eat the Australian flag. Doing a bit of colour swapping with the Greenlandic flag I came around to something like a black/blue flag with a yellow/red sphere, still feel like the colours contrast badly, but perhaps something like that would work, lob in the souther cross if you will.

@@Shadoww844Why? Hawaii has a union jack in their flag & they love it. Also, there are 3 other countries with a union jack: New Zealand, Fiji, and Tuvalu. Tuvalu tried changing their flag before, but it got backlash, so they changed it back. The only reason Hawaii isn't a country is because of the USA. Also, no creativity? This is actually the most creative flag that has the Union Jack. Even more unique than Fiji.

Recognition of history is all well and good, but as others have pointed out, even creating a national symbol it’s best to not create one that flagellates one group while begging for an apology from the other. One might say “do it on your own time, not on the flag”. An alteration to the design that I, and probably many others, thought of would be to set the sun in the center of the black and red fields and to have the eight pointed star set inside of it fully with its color split in half as the opposite of the fields they overlap (top half of the start inside the circle is red and the lower half is black). A reflection that though crimes of the past happened, not everyone even in the past committed them and that none today should ever commit them.

Yet, the US replaced the Union Jack with stars symbolizing the US states when it gained independent. The Union Jack represents ownership. By having a Union Jack in the canton, Australia, New Zealand, other former colonies and current British territories show that they are still the property of the UK 🇦🇺🇳🇿🇫🇰🇫🇯
@mirfjc

@@_blank-_ Very silly comment and obviously not true. It represents a historical connection. Even the US initially fought under a flag with the Union Jack in the canton. They were just butt hurt by the war and gave the finger by substituting for the stars and stealing a few "u"s from the language - but they still kept the British red, white, and blue. And they feel much better now. On a more serious note, it is amazing to me the rabid anglophobic bigotry given the supposedly "clawing" "British" so happily and peacefully transferred governance - for Australia in 1901. We should all think on Mel Gibson and remember how anglophobic bigotry is so often a leading indicator of mental illness.

i loved everything you said (and fantastic video presentation. stunning.), and I 100% agree with your reasons for changing the flag. I really reeeeeally wanted to like the design. But in my lay opinion, I must confess that I did not... it just looks too design-by-committee.. that there are too many ideas (visually and what they represent) on one flag, and the effect of each idea is diminished. I suspect to win over a population, it will need to be instantly striking, likeable, and easy to understand (even if there are multiple layers of meaning), and possibly something that people are already familiar and comfortable with. Kangaroos and green-and-gold are obvious examples, but I also somewhat agree with your reasons for dismissing them as not representing Australian people / history. Anyway, I wish I could be of more help, other than saying that I truly hope that this movement gathers momentum, I'll always vote for a new flag over the existing one.

Litterally no one in Ireland or even any of the overseas diaspora want anything to do with the st. patrick’s cross, it‘s something the brits came up with in the late 18th century in order to fit their flag for the 1800 act of union. It is personally sth. completely outlandish and has nothing to do with being or feeling irish in a sense as many coin it: “a british invention for a people who never used it”. I don't think it's the most "beautiful" flag, but it's so meaningful and (given the Kiwi referendum) makes sense as not extremely divergent in symbolism while being distinct. It seems to me the reason for the NZ flag staying the same was the fern didn't have great symbolism so keeping the flag as is was seen as no worse than an uninspired design. I think the K shape of the left devices is extremely underrated and I think you do a wonderful job explaining its significance. After the Minnesota state flag there's a precedent for this lovely 'inverted' triangle. Some have said the canton still feels like it exists, and I agree but that just points to the meaning that the aboriginal people are the stewards of the land and should receive more rights to that end. Regardless, the juxtaposition of so much history in a complex but not overwhelming flag is extremely admirable; if I can teach a country's whole history from their flag that's pretty amazing!
