Presented By: Eamonn Connolly, James McHugh Construction Co.
Description: Tall concrete buildings bring unique problems and challenges with issues related to creep effects. Engineers and contractors attempt to control these column shortening issues with a technique known as column cambering. Constructing columns at an elevation above the theorical floor elevation in anticipation of future column shortening requires significant material testing, analysis, planning, communication, coordination, and monitoring. This presentation shares recent project experience and the importance of the communication of anticipated column shortening, slab deflection and construction tolerances between all project team members. Construction methodologies and monitoring programs are also presented.
