I use to work on gwazi back in 2003-2005. It was definitely a high maintenance ride. Each side had three trains ,6 cars on each train, 1 ton per car. Two upstairs ,one downstairs being torn apart, clean, lots of grease in those wheels , ( three wheels per corner) inspected of the frame, painted, reassembled. Then crane lifted to maintenance track. Each morning 4am one crew would inspect the 4 trains, the other guys would inspect the brake run, Q line, the motor room for the lift motor. The room under the platform for any air leaks. Once the sun came up it was our morning walk on the tracks for loose boards, handrails, and the big lift gear at the top, we also look for what we called blow outs ( crushed wood under the steel tracks) 7 layers of grade 1 PT wood. Nailed and bolted together. Yet Floating on the uprights. Then, after that , we had to ride the train Each morning before park open. The rest of the day was spend working on the train downstairs and any issues during the day. 20 years in the Airlines, but this was the hardest job I had . Well now I'm about to ride iron gwazi ,once its back in service. Somethings never change.

OG Gwazi was good at first, and totally innovative when it comes to wooden coasters. I loved the dueling elements. But it got so rough over the years. Re-tracking and the Millennium Flyer trains helped a bit, but it was still a teeth-rattler. It got to the point I couldn't ride anymore because it was so rough, it caused me to get really bad migraines. Iron Gwazi though, is a whole 'nother ballgame.

I remember following the construction of the ride back in 1999 - I still have some of the photos I took with my whopping one-megapixel camera, and begged my parents to take me to the passholder preview day. It was definitely a fun ride (and my first ever woodie), but being Florida, it rained for a good portion of the day, so the passholder ERT was cut short and with the slow dispatches, I only got 1-2 rides in. The next year when Kraken opened, they also had a passholder day, but that was quite different - smaller crowds with a high-throughput B&M meant that the only wait was for the front row.

That would be amazing to have a hotel with a giant glass wall facing the Serengeti. Though Gwazi is in center/backstage of park not the top/right side where the animals are. Always thought that would be cool. Wake up to grazing giraffes with your coffee in a bird dome. Awesome. This was one of my favorite coasters as a teenager. It wasn't rough beyond what you'd expect from what I remember. In it's latter years though; it was brutal the one ride I remember doing and saying never again. To anyone who has ever wondered why they're called Anheuser-Busch, the company was created by George Schneider but was nearly bankrupt by the 1850's (yeah, this company is really damn old) but was originally called the Scneider Brewery Corporation. They ran into too much competition only to be saved by Eberhard Anheuser who operated it as then the E. Anheuser Company's Brewing Association. In 1869, Anheuser's son in law Aldolphyus Busch bought it from him and then merged both companies together to form the E. Anheuser-Busch Brewing Association. The company's name is now Anheuser-Busch LLC which is a subsidiary of the enormous Belgian company AB InBev with the AB being Anheuser-Busch and the InBEV being a company they merged with. They also own Budweiser but the whole company is still primarily owned and run by the Busch family.

I only got to ride 4 times, last time was in 2008 and I really liked it. Summer 2008 I arrived on on stormy day and the ride was closed for a passing storm. They let me in the queue anyway and I waited in the station(Lion) for the storm to pass. for about 30 mins or so. They let those of us waiting in station depart. We got halfway up the lift hill back row and it started to rain hard and the storm was back, lots of thunder and lightening that felt on top of us. My friend asked if they will get us off and I just smiled and said its quicker and safer for us to go but they better hold on tight as this is about to be painful. They were not a enthusiast. It was so fast, rough, screams, thunder, flashes and add Gwazi pain on top when we hit that break run soaking wet, blind and dazed was one of the most intense ride I have ever done, As a enthusiast you wait for moments like that and you never forget it. Would pay extra to do it again. As for my friend well they went from novice to master in about 3 mins even with the scars.

I know these guys all to well from my visits to IAAPA Expo's. Yes! Those Millennium Fliers are the BEST! The sad thing about racing coasters is that...they MUST race. Load issues are always a problem. They most certainly get relegated to single run (non race mode) It's kinda like a 4 engine 747. More parts to run when 2 will do. In the coasters case, one will do. Busch does a great job as does Disney with nods to the past. To repurpose that lumber was a classy move. Love your in depth look into history of your rides. Funny thing about wood, it expands & contracts like steel, but yo hear more creaks & groins just like your house as the sun sets. You brighten my Sundays!

Yeah. This has been my home park for the past 25 years and Gwazi was a lot of fun the first few years it opened. Remember, that technically, these were 2 separate coasters, each having distinct, unique ride experiences. So: 2 credits! The Tiger coaster was better than the Lion one though. Unfortunately, over the years, both were becoming more and more uncomfortable, add to the fact of them not dispatching the trains at the same time, then only running the one side altogether... it just wasn't much fun anymore. I was lucky to get one last ride about a month before it closed for good. And I hated seeing that hulking monster just sitting there for years doing nothing. I haven't ridden the new incarnation yet, but plan to get over there once I lose another 10 to 15 pounds. I'm told that the RMC seats are unforgiving to us burly guys. Hell, I still haven't ridden Cheetah Hunt or Cobra's Curse for the same reasons!

I don't know if it's just his shirt catching the wind weird or what, but the guy in the front seat of the off-ride clip that starts at 15:46 almost looks like he's trying to stand up and almost gets launched out when the ride hits the negative G point at 15:52. Re-watched it several times and I can't quite figure out what's going on, but it is amusing/terrifying. Another great video, as always! Only knew of this coaster from it's recent rebirth, had no idea it started as a dueling coaster. The way people were talking about the old ride's roughness near it's end was really similar to what I usually heard from people about Psyclone at Magic Mountain too. I personally really enjoyed it, but holy hell was it a rough ride the last time I went on it in the mid-2000s.

I remember i wanted to ride it because it didn't go upside down like the other coasters did and I thought it would be a tame ride. Ohhhh boy was I wrong, there was no head padding, just the lap bar, it was a wild ride for a 10ish year old. Smooth though, I was surprised at how smooth and fast it flew. I walked away scared of coasters 😆. 20 years later I conquered my fears and im waiting for the hype to die a bit before I go and reride my very first coaster again

Fitting with that last remark since Crocs and dinosaurs are distantly related and coexisted with each other. With some crocs being big enough to eat dinosaurs.

I’ve suffered from kidney stones from time to time…I’d always ride Gwazi to rattle them loose! The new Gwazi looks to be fantastic though…can’t wait!

It was the worst coaster I ever rode! My daughter and I both got concussions from one ride on it but it was near the end before they closed it. It was so rough and head slamming our entire day was ruined because of our concussion headaches. I personally am glad it's gone because it was an accident waiting to happen. I haven't ridden the iron one yet but I hope it's nothing like the original. My favorite Busch Gardens coaster is Montu I would ride it and go get back in line lol

Hershey announced they're closing Wildcat July 31. Many believe it's going to become an RMC coaster.

Hey! What can you dig up on Riverview Park that existed in Chicago? (1904-1967) It was a pretty big operation that existed for more than 60 years, and had a few rollercoasters and thrill rides...
