I was stuck in area with no loads expect for this one that was paying like 1.30$ a mile. It was getting close to the end of the day going into the weekend and I was really not trying to sit for 2 more days. I called on that load and the broker was telling me that’s all he’s got in on that load and that he’s gonna lose money for any more than that. I told him give me a few minutes to think about it. I got lucky and a 2$ a mile load pops up so I booked that instead . The first broker called me back I told him I found something else and he instantly tells me he can do 2$ a mile when couple minutes ago he was crying that he was going to be losing money if he payed any more than 1.30$. They really out finnesing drivers. I don’t think all brokers are bad but don’t believe their whining.

Wow, the issue with the industry is that there is too much sale tactics-manipulation, and very little transparency and honor. Survival of the fittest. But every pendulum going one way will always come back the opposite direction with the same fierce cutting power. I don’t want the freight industry to complaint when more and more drivers exit trucking and when future potential drives stay away from this predatory industry.

@@broyaradmykaal4557 depending on what you’re pulling and the price of fuel it’s close to .78 to .99 a mile just for fuel, insurance will run .12-.20 cents a mile, then you have tires .04 a mile, maintenance oil changes and air filters .03 a mile, brakes last around 40,000 miles so that costs roughly .01 a mile. Even without overhead your cost per mile is $1.27 minimum. Then you got food cost runs .12 a mile. So you’re at $1.40 a mile, then you got 10% to put away for maintenance that’s .20 a mile so you’re at $1.60 a mile now. You put away 30% for taxes so you’re at $2.20 a mile now. You will slowly be going out of business. This is why they say most hotshots don’t make it 6 months. I’m just saying I have a successful hotshot company with 3 trucks and 2 semi trucks. You guys need to stop taking cheap freight they have a lot more on the load then you know. Negotiate hard and fill your trailer with partials be strategic with it and you can succeed. Keep in mind these numbers are based on you owning all of your equipment and doesn’t even include maintenance on the trailer. Your part of the reason I started my box truck company bro. Was running strong for 4 months with my own authority n everything. Crooks at repair shops took me out of business. Imagine paying 15k in repairs and your truck still not being able to run. 15K in they said that they think its an electrical problem that I need to bring it else were. Truck sat for 4 months while still paying 1900 dollar insurance. Took it to another shop and they charged me 8k to fix it(was not an electrical problem) .28K spent just because I have to rely on people to do right, I couldnt even sleep at night.I was emotionally distraught. I just wanted my truck back so i could run. If trucking was my only income at that time I would be on the streets. It’s like nobody treats you like a human in this industry , your literally a walking atm machine. Its Straight cut throat!!! Between the repair shops and being disrespected by the brokers who treat us like shit . I just realize this is not the industry for me. I would rather be a dispatcher, or anything else that doesn’t require owning a truck. It felt like a dark cloud with the trucking business. Everybody gets a piece of your pie while you get all the left over crumbs and deal with all the extra headaches while working the hardest.Being away for weeks, time spent from ya family, driving on them dangerous streets just didnt make sense for me. I ended up selling the truck when prices for them were insane and ended up breaking even. Thank god! I just want to salute you for still doing your thing bro. I'll add on to this even though it's an old post. Two facts of reality everyone needs to realize.... 1) In every commercial industry, be it road, rail, or air, it's an economic race to the bottom...and 2) Too many operators in any industry only makes the race to the bottom that much faster. This imbalance sets up the dog-eat-dog and the "I'll do it for nothing" mentality. And all of the "make six-figures in trucking" youtube videos over the last 2 years didn't help matters either. My industry is aviation and the trucks I drive have wings on them and it's the same thing....too many pilots for too few high paying airline jobs available means a lot of lower paying flying jobs at the lower tier companies. Fortunately, I fly for one of the highest paying companies, but on the journey to get there, there were too many sh!!^ty low paying flying jobs I had to endure to get there.

One of them I got a UCR and I'm not sure what to hell that is. They hurry up, bend you over, sign your ass up, and start talking to you like you are their employee. You know everyone says the rates are bad and this and that. But we all know the brokers have way more than they are saying. So I tried an experiment which you should try to and it will boggle your mind. I called quite a few brokers posing as a shipper needing loads moved that I’ve done before so I could compare the rates. The amount they quoted me for anything from hotshots to 53’ was around $7-$10 a mile. I was like wow why so much all I hear from truckers is the rates are too low to run. He says well you have the cost of diesel is at an all time high right now, deadhead costs because of the bad freight area, loading and unloading time, line haul rate, fuel surcharge, and tarping costs. It’s funny how this is all the stuff we try to argue with brokers about every day when we negotiate loads. I’m glad I don’t have to deal with them I’ve gained enough direct customers to keep me moving 24/7. But yeah try to call multiple brokers it’ll boggle your mind what they quote shippers compared to what they give us owner operators! The numbers comes out to them actually making more than us on a load which will piss you right off since we are the ones out there spending money on fuel hauling loads being away from our families and all they doing is sitting at a computer!!

I met a new non cdl hotshot driver at a pickup who was so so excited to be getting a load for $1.50 a mile, and it was a full load for his trailer with no room to double up. I tried to give him advice that a $1.50 is not enough to make it in this industry especially with these diesel prices and to not accept loads like that and tell the broker you need more. So many drivers go out of business 6 months before they even realize it because they aren't planning for the future. The industry is on the verge of crashing and so many drivers are going to go out of business. I'm just hanging on putting as few miles on ny rig as possible while trying to only haul direct with the hope things will turn around if politics change, the economy gets better, and diesel prices go down. I project in 2-3 years there will be such a shortage of drivers that the industry will boom and I can hustle hard for a couple years, pay off my accents, and invest my money into other businesses and get the F out of the industry.

The semi truckers and non cdl trucker/hotshot trucker is target low rates to $1.50 - $2.50 cpm. The broker/shippers may low pay and made profits themselves. All trucker get United and ban low rate/broker. The low rate loads shelf/park get rotten or rust.

This is why I enjoy watching your videos, you keep it real. I'm like the other guy though and feel like I'm on a rollercoaster ride, do I do it or don't I, do I or don't I. I've dealt with brokers before and actually had one hang up on me when I had one answer the same way as you described and I asked him what his problem was. My thought was if this guy didn't want to be bothered with calls about the load, why the f*** did he post it. Stay safe and keep it real 💯. BTW, nice K whopper that passed y'all.

You addressed some very important topics in this video. I was nearly compelled to start a campaign to have your name added to next years' ballot! My only apprehension was my dislike for politics, so I let it ride! 😀 In all seriousness, I don't know the hot shot space well, but I wanted to elaborate on a few of your many excellent points. 1) Anyone in the trucking industry should know their numbers. Math doesn't lie! If the math says it's not profitable, it's not profitable. Move on! 2) Put boots on the ground and go visit shippers. Let them see and get to know you! You may get 90 "No" responses and 10 "Yes" responses, but those 10 can sustain you until #11 comes around. Remember although you're approaching an entity, it's run by people. Learn the shipper needs and their business footprint. Be professional, be prompt, be perceptive and be personal! Your first load is the gateway to the next. 3) To your point in the video regarding alleviating brokers, one has to be mindful of what's good for their business in order to truly value it. By that I mean, you are your company's best advocate. How can you accept someone with no affiliation to your business have so much control over its success or failure. Brokers are opportunists that feed on the vulnerable. Everyone has to provide for themselves or their families, but broker dependency is an equation for collapse.

Should be keeping a journal or binder for brokers. Labeling them good or bad. "Not taking trucks" But taking calls... Guess hes waiting for the best offers. If he blocks you so easily, he gonna block others that easily. Put this on his binder file- "Easily blocks" If he does call you to pickup a load in the future- it will be a tell that he really needs you, because he has to unblock you to call you/overlook that hes blocked you, THEN you can run up the price. -also, you can calmly tell him in the moment "im marking it down" that you are blocked and beat him to the hang up.

Exactly. People always faulting a broker. We have to call 100 plus shippers daily plus make trips to different warehouses just to land a load. Most brokers at least the good ones only take 10 to 12 percent a load. How are we wrong ppl if we get a price from these shippers

You said something so important that could fix how things work. It’s how you talk to people and how they accept it. Yada yada yada Enough of if my skin gets hurt guys….because it’s not about that when you can’t make your payment next time to some person who has no idea what you’ve been through just in the bathroom today

You got too many people out there just for themselves. And as far as rude brokers go, I think that might be a good reason to have a dispatcher. Sure, the dispatcher costs, but at least you don't have to put up with the broker's attitude when you are paying someone else to do that for you.
@redjeb5833

Giving 5-10% margin when your profit margin is thin isn't good. If you're a one truck operation dispatch yourself. Most brokers aren't rude and the ones that are, just black list them, as soon as the rudeness starts, just hang up.
@j.m.6048

@@redjeb5833 I feel ya on the thin profit margin thing. The funny thing about dispatcher pay is it's based on your revenue, and not your profit. If it were based on profit, probably a lot of dispatchers would be going out of business too.

Great vid bro, got my sub. The brokers got to be reined in. Double brokering is a real thing and imo is theft. Until truckers hit rock bottom and figure out the only way to truly be treated respectfully is to unite/unionize or whatever you want to call it. Taking into account inflation truck drivers are making less money than they did 40 yrs ago. Why? Whose fault? TRUCKERS. its our fault for not sticking together and remembering this should be a brotherhood.

You are 100% right about the dishonesty and the manipulation from these brokers. They have no idea what they’re talking about sometimes. And if you challenge them on something they get an attitude thinking they can talk to you any kind of way. I don’t tolerate that type of shit. There’s a couple brokers that I made a verbal agreement with to never work with again after the first sign of disrespect. And they still call my dispatcher and offer me stuff 😂. It’s a NO every time.
