Another great video! You two never disappoint. I admire you for budgeting and getting rid of your debt. There are many people that could do that but they’re too worried about name brands and the appearance of being richer than they are. It’s rare to see young people that have the discipline it takes to do what you did. I’m 60 y/o and debt free also. It’s a wonderful feeling and I wish I had done it at your age. Well done!!

Being debt free is really crucial in our humble opinions to make this work (and we are retired) but I think striving for simplicity and financial independence no matter your path in life is one of the pillars to being content. Thanks for sharing your particulars, I know you have helped and encouraged a lot of folks. I think a washer and dryer is more of a convince, and not so much a return on investment. People pay $4000 to $6000 in residential units because of convenience, and don’t have the advantage of free water and electricity like we do. We, and when I say we, I mean my wife, loves our washer and dryer. Believe me, if you get one, you won’t regret it. Now that you’re staying in places a month at a time, does that mean there’s a chance you’ll come hang with us in Galveston this winter? Keep um coming!

I think the washer and dryer is more necessary for people with kids. The amount of laundry is just exponentially more. For some the time and energy saved may be worth the investment. It also means less clothes to carry around. I saw one video where they had a machine that both washed and dried in the same "bucket," no need to rotate laundry and takes up less space.

We actually only do a load every 2 weeks. We do everything in bulk at laundromats (much bigger washer and dryers compared to RV parks). Also the amount of detergent we use is way more frugal than most people would be. Hope this helps!

I was also wondering this. We do laundry about once every 1-2 weeks and it’s $3 a load for wash and dry at our current park which is pretty cheap compared to what we usually pay at at a park or a campground. We’re spending a minimum of $30/month on laundry. And that’s not including soap

The reason National Parks and other campgrounds lower prices in the winter is that water or other services are shut down, reducing their maintenance cost. Typically you are not paying for garbage pickup, cleaning out fire pits, mowing, water pumping, septic pumping, etc. during the winter. We boondock on Forest Service land all the time for free, they call it "Dispersed Camping".

I really enjoy everything you two talk about. You mentioned portable washers. My little portable spin dry washer, that I put in my bathtub on a plastic crate when I use it, cost just under $100 on Ebay and I wouldn't part with it. They do a very nice job if you use and treat them properly. You don't stuff them full, you don't stop the spin before it's finished, etc. I think I've had it about 3 years and I'm still impressed with the good job it does for such a little washer.

@@HappilyEverHanks We don't own an RV but are seriously considering getting one to get away from our cold winter weather. Our biggest concern is can we handle it since we are in our 70s. My husband is a retired truck driver so the driving part isn't a concern, he's still good there. We're just wondering about everything else. We would prefer boondocking and wonder if there are others in our age bracket doing it. We own rural acreage and would come back here for the summer.

@@HappilyEverHanks The portable washer is pretty good also in that you can save water by washing perhaps some delicate things or whatever hardly gets dirty, then squeeze the water out of them, pop them in the spin side and wash your socks, or work shirts, etc. in the hardly dirty wash water. Works just fine and water is saved. One thing I also do is wash jeans one pair at a time because they are bulky and heavy and the washer is small. I don't try to make a workhorse out of it and overload it. I also don't use the full amount of time. In my experience it hasn't taken but six or seven minutes on dirty things. No need to make the machine run plus use electricity if not needed.

That’s fantastic to hear! We have met many other people that do Boondocking in all ages. @@HappilyEverHanks What I should have said is saving water. I was being distracted and not thinking clearly. Sorry. It does use electricity no matter what water is being used, and one has to be careful with the electric cord when using it in a bathtub, shower, etc. I put the washer on a rectangular shaped plastic crate (I think they're used in bakeries) which keeps it up out of the water when it empties, then I drape the electric cord over a command hook on the wall under the shower then into a short heavy duty extension cord which reaches the wall receptacle.

Good video! It is a mysterious black hole as to where all that money goes. We still have our S&B home so there is that expense as well. But love your Laundry part, I have always said it does not pay to have a washer dryer with weight and the addition to your gray tanks and the cost I am happy to go to a laundromat, you meet all kinds of people there. We would go about every 2 weeks and make a day of it, get our groceries and fuel up for our next move so it was just how we rolled. We could get in and out in about 45 min and do about 3-4 machines full at one time, something that takes us all day at home. Keep up the good work

Thank you for such a useful video. Very helpful. So glad we did this for 10 years in the 80"s and 90"s when we were younger and childless. That's when it's a fun learning experience. Not when you are too old to hike, bike and climb. Many times we were the only ones at campgrounds because RVs were not popular and living in one made people wonder what was wrong with us. It was super inexpensive and provided a freedom that's indescribable. I can't imagine doing it today at such high prices for everything.

So refreshing to see another couple who are on the same page financially. Wife and I are in our late 60s and have lived a wonderful life. We sacrificed some the first half of our marriage but do almost the opposite now and pay cash for everything. "Debt free asap" became our motto. We have friends and family members who did just the opposite and are paying the price big time for their care free spending lifestyle.

As Sea Shed said, the investment in a washer/dryer unit, in my opinion, is “paid off” more so in your time and ease of use, as opposed to strictly monetary cost to use ratio. I agree that it’s an individual choice based on what each person is willing to deal with when it comes to laundry.

Will travel police records manage for food! That’s not really a thing. But tackling debt is something I have to do. The laundry numbers were very interesting. We used to spend $10 a week (or more!) on laundry when we lived in a small apartment in a college town with our young son. Just on washing and drying time. Now we live in a house with a washer and dryer. We bought the washer for a few hundred dollars, my mom gave us the dryer because she was getting a new set. So it costs far less now, just the electricity (electric dryer) and water (“city” water, which is about $55 per month for everything, including sewer costs.) So we’re still paying more than $110 per year I’d say, but for three of us (our son is 15.) I’m impressed by your savings there! You aren’t secretly nudists or anything like that are you? 😂

Hey guys, I just wanted to drop a line and say how meaningful finding your channel is to my wife and I. We are a few years out from full time but you have been inspirational to us and an invaluable resource. Kyle, your information on the water filter and 90 degree adapter got me thinking, we have very hard water with a lot of minerals and it wreaks havoc on our appliances. I went to the Wal store and purchased two adapters and two filters and attached them to our cloths washing machine, I am certain having better water will help cleaning our clothes and the filter is sure to prolong the life of our washer! Your tips are useful even in our "sticks and bricks:, and will be used when we RV. Thanks for the great tips and for a way to save our appliances from costly repairs and shorter life. We appreciate all you guys are doing. Bill

Hello I just found your video an just watched your two videos on the amount you had spent per year. Here is a little something to keep in your head for down the road. You talking about the money you spent on your propane. Well if you have to replace your A/C for what ever reason or you decide to get a different RV . I have a 40’ Diesel pusher motor home an I have two AC units an they BOTH ARE HEAT PUMPS JUST LIKE YOUR HOUSE. So in the winter or just cold nights you do not have to run your GAS HEATER but you know if it is really really cold yes your gas heater will kick on to help heat an that happens automatically through the system. That will save you a lot in propane heating. Yes they will cost more than just a AC unit but I love having them . Both of my units we’re getting old army couch had 12.500 btu but I went back with 15.000 btu units . Happy camping and have fun an good luck .

Hello from Ouray! Thank you very much for sharing this video! It is awesome info to help folks plan. Our travel trailer arrives within a month. I think our plan will be to predominately do 1-2 week boondocking trips for the next 5 years while we still work. After that, we'll push out for 1-2 month trips, then return back to the mountains for a month or so before heading out again. I have to say that out of all of the figures you presented, the laundry mat vs installing a washer/dryer in your rig was the most surprising! Congrats on putting your noses to the grind stone to being able to achieve all of this!! That is awesome!

My grandparents spent each summer as camp hosts at various places throughout the west, and BLM land you can get 14 day permits to camp for free, to keep camping for free on BLM land you then have to move your camper so many miles to another location, not very far though. Many of these have camp hosts, none though have hookups that I know of. Same with State Land in Arizona, you can camp for free for 14 days. So some expenses could be saved by doing some of these things. I would loved to have done this but have always been pretty tied down with my dogs, chickens, and horses, etc, and still am!
