I had previously read that there were two or three Uhtreds (the first, second, etc.), and indeed, the great warrior did come later, as pointed out here. I assume that Uhtred (in 'The Last Kingdom') represents them all, as well as any great general/warrior/strategist who would have been a vital part of any of the various kings' armies, and of whom would have been greatly depended upon, though not necessarily documented in history. Anyway, 'The Last Kingdom' is a fantastic series which just gets better and better with each season!

Great video. Point of fact, the word viking is actually a verb rather than a noun. It refers to the practice of seaborne raiding into 'enemy lands to steal silver, cattle or whatever else they could lay their hands on, killing any who put up any resistance. To go viking was to jump in a ship, head for foreign shores and loot, burn, rape and pillage, then sail home with the spoils. The people doing the viking were referred to as Danes, Norse, Svear and even Rus, although they all ultimately originated from Scandinavia. The Normans, noteable for one of their leaders 'William' who became known as the Conqueror, who invaded Saxon England in 1066, were also from Scandinavia, hence the denomination 'Norman' from 'Norse Men'. Very much enjoyed this video.

@@christophersayrs907 I’m only quoting back Bernard Cornwell when I say this. I don’t profess to having any deep insight into ‘Old Norse’. Not quite sure what you mean by ‘it referred to the actual undertaking and not the undertaking itself’. Could you explain further. If you have a deeper understanding of this then I’m perfectly prepared to accept your point of view. Bernard Cornwell had obviously done a great deal of research when he put this into the forward of the first book in the series ‘The Last Kingdom’. Could you provide your credentials? I’m very interested to know. I was always convinced that Vikings referred to the collective peoples who invaded England (and many other parts of Europe and further afield) during the 9th century and onwards. It was only reading BCs forward that convinced me otherwise.

@@christophersayrs907 But it is not a people? You seem to be getting very muddled., Whether it is a noun or a verb is not the issue here, the issue is whether it was actually applied to a specific group of people. Evidence would suggest that it was not. We had 'Pirates' but they could have been from anywhere. In fact Vikings and Pirates are very similar, in that they attacked from the sea, raped, pillaged, took slaves and went! No one has every suggested that Pirate was a race? So why is Viking?

@@hogwashmcturnip8930 I disagree that the issue is "whether it was actually applied to a specific group of people," and thank you terribly much for foisting the muddiness upon me, while it appears that you, dear sir, are the one getting very muddled. "Viking" is a noun, and if you'd read above, it did apply to a very specific group: "a group of people related to Vik (perhaps Erik, but this reference is, alas, lost). It ALSO applies to a raid by those related to Vik, and even a ship owned/used by a group of people related to Vik. "Pirates," take anyone as you said, so your analogy is poor, indeed. I do agree, in terms of the series Uhtred should have gotten a lot more credit, however when I re watched the series I truly understand why he did not. Uhtred was everything Alfred wanted to be, a powerful warrior with reputation. Due to men admiring Uhtred plus his constant insolence and inability to behave himself in social and court settings, Alfred began to despise him, also because he was a pagan and Alfred was a very pious man. Alfred and uhtred had a love hate relationship. They both needed each other and both unappreciated each other. Was magnificent to see Alfred and Uhtred emotional reconciliation at the end of season 3 though where they both re wrote all their wrongs! It’s a series I won’t ever stop watching I think, hope you enjoyed the video ❤️

This is full of great information, but it is a bit misleading for those who are drawn in by the title, and who are not aware that Cornwell's character is entirely fictitious. This piece should state off the bat that the only Uhtred was the Bold, who lived over a Centurty later, and had no role in the key period of Alfred and Edwards' time frame of unifying Wessex and the other Saxon kingdoms. Nicely done piece on him, though.

It would also be better if it had used pictures of the actual places too, not random ones of foreign places. Also the First king of England was king of Mercia initially, not Wessex. Mercia absorbed Wessex not the other way around.

Please read my other comments I have left in this post . Uhtred the Bold was not the Uhtred of The Last Kingdom and they were both real people within my family tree . I have very crossed feeling about this. You see I'm not From England or Europe I'm descendent of native indigenous south americans and Spaniards. I watched the Netflix version as I watched other series about Vikings. It breaks my heart to know that humankind has had to go through blood baths to get where we are know. If these series are a good version of the reality those people endured I can say that I don't understand the thirst for power and control of the white man against their brothers and sisters. England has been the most bloodthirsty region in the world trying to be the bigger "Empire" all of them wanted to be an "Empire" and after that came the Vatican with The templars pretending to be religious men when in reality they were mercenaries, murderers at the service of the "Empires" of the time. Too much blood and violence everywhere...

For anyone who may be interested, Bernard Cornwell also wrote "The Winter King" trilogy about King Arthur, chronicled through the eyes of the protagonist Derfel. It is being optioned for a series, and is every bit the story equal to The Saxon Chronicles.

I just finished The Last Kingdom and enjoyed it so much (and the Vikings show) that I want to read Cornwell's books. Looking at Goodreads, the majority of his novels seem to have really strong ratings, which is a great sign. I also really need to get into reading Joe Abercrombie XD

Alexander Dreymon is such an amazing actor. When Uhtred cried, I bawled like baby. I felt all his pain and all his happiness. I would love more Viking movies based on history. This series was so interesting and all the actors did an amazing job except for Skade. Thank goodness her role wasn't long lived.

I read the books, some more than once. They are fabulous. Bernard Cornwell is probably my favorite author. The Sharpe’s Rifles series is also fabulous, and Sean Bean made a wonderful Richard Sharpe on tv. Thank you for the history here, tho it’s quite the spoiler to hear of Uhtred’s assassination.

Vikings Valhala [series - Amazing!] Set more than 100 years after the events of Vikings, the Netflix series has followed the increased tensions between the Vikings and the native English, as well as the warring factions of the traditional pagan Vikings and those with Christian beliefs. Focusing on the adventures of famous Vikings Leif Eriksson, Freydis Eriksdottir and Harald Sigurdsson, the first season began with the St Brice's Day Massacre in 1002, and the show has the potential to continue on until 1066, considered the end of the Viking age by many historians.

Wonderful true historical piece. Love this stuff. Love the Last Kingdom show. It's obviously not even 50% historically accurate but some of the themes of characters even whole families and people being stuck between Saxon and Dane at the time and the stress of uniting England and the Church are true historical themes and the story does justice to that I think.
