- Non-duality, Rupert Spira
British philosopher, spiritual teacher, and author Rupert Spira is based in Oxford, the United Kingdom. Rupert considers that reading Rumi's poetry when he was fifteen years old was the beginning of his spiritual journey. Following in his parents' footsteps, he studied under Dr. Francis Roles at Colet House in London. Dr. Francis Roles himself was a student of the mystic thinkers Ouspensky and Gurdjieff as well as Swami Shantananda Saraswati's mantra meditation. He also developed an interest in classical Advaita (non-duality) as a result of this, and he continued investigate Sufism through the practice of Mevlevi Turning, a form of sacred movement that combines meditation and prayer.
Additionally, he read Ramana Maharshi and Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj's teachings, and in the late 1970s, he went to Krishnamurti's final gatherings at Brockwood Park. Meetings with Francis Lucille and Robert Adams in the midddle of the 1990s introduced Spira to the Direct Path teachings of Atmananda Krishna Menon, which now serve as the foundation for his own Direct Path method of spiritual awakening. The core of Spira's philosophy is that "The greatest discovery in life is that our essential nature does not share the limits or the destiny of the body and mind." He asserts that a form of happiness, a satisfying if unexotic 'enlightenment', can be found if one can identify with the I that lies behind the imagined I of feelings and thoughts.
Over the years, Rupert’s teachings have assisted me in clearing my own journey.
