Yesterday I went for an audition for college, acting, and It was also an interview/seminar. One of the questions that I asked that interest me was “Will this acting program give us a job at the end of the semester?” The teacher simply said “no we just train you to become a professional actor once you’ve finish this program you’re on your own”. I’ve come to realize that •college for acting• isn’t for me. I rather focus my time with my local acting school rather than attending 2 years for college and paying 6k each semester. My local acting club can assist me on getting roles, agents and etc. Way less cost than college… This channel is so underrated, your vids are so educational. Thanks kurt

Parents want you to be safe and acting is not a "safe" career choice in most peoples eyes. There are sacrifices that need to be made with no guarantees of success. That being said, you have one life to do what you love and the only way to truly fail is to never try. It's definitely not too late at 21. I didn't start until I was 26. I say if you enjoy it then just do it. There will probably be some people that are more advanced than you but they're usually separated into an advanced or intermediate class like where I train. When you first start you probably won't be the only beginner in class; there might be other people who started two days before you. Also, most schools that I know of will let you "audit" a class for free so you can just sit in a class and see what happens. You're not usually forced to go on stage during an audit in fact where I train you don't get to go on stage until your first actual class.

They say there are a lot of people in Hollywood with talent. As a struggling actor for many years I thought so too as I saw many more skilled than I was. Until I had a real eye opening experience in a play I was in 20 years ago. From being in that play I discovered that actually nobody has much talent based on the performance of an actress in that play. This woman was the best actress I had ever seen. Her performance made all the academy award actresses I had ever seen in films put together look like nothing compared to this woman’s talent. We had rehearsed for months and a few days before the performance the lead actress got sick. The producers didn’t want to scrap the play so they held some quick auditions for a replacement. I was at the auditions when hundreds of actresses showed up. They were good but nothing special. One actress was given a ride by her older sister who sat watching the auditions. The director kept saying No, No you are playing an aging prostitute reflecting on the mistakes in her life. You are not believable. At a break the actress with the sister wanted to practice so she gave the script to her sister to work on it with her. It was like lightening once in a lifetime. The sister was unbelievable. Everyone, the director the producer the whole cast stopped and watched. The director asked the sister to read the lead part. She put the script down and said she didn’t need it as she had memorized it by listening to the women auditioning. She did the part cold with not having ever rehearsed it. It was unbelievable.Her acting, but it really was not acting, because she BECAME the prostitute, was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. After doing some of the lines she would stop and ask if it was ok if she did it again but change some of it because she said as written it was not how the real Lola would have responded. The writer was there and remarked she was actually improving the lines for the part. Everyone asked her how she did that. She said script only captured 80% of the character and when she acted and became the character she added the 20% that was missing to make Lola a whole person. The director immediately dismissed the other actresses auditioning for the part and said she had it. Then he said to her tell me the truth. NO actress in the entire world can do what you did without months of rehearsal but it was an original play never done before so she couldn’t have seen the script before. Everyone asked how did she do it. She said when she was 7 years old her mother took her to a broadway play. On seeing it once she memorized all the songs in it and performed them on the subway coming home. She said people clapped then asked her to do some of the speaking parts. She did the lead actress then did it again and added some lines because she said that was not what she thought the character would say. She then told everyone she went to see Sweeney Todd with her sister. She said the actress doing Mrs. Lovett was terrible and was just a funny caricature of the real Mrs. Lovett. The real person was a much darker evil person. Everyone then asked her to do Mrs. Lovett. She did and I have never been so scared in my whole life. I was afraid to turn my back on her after that because I was afraid. On the day of the performance of the play only about 20 people showed up and there was only one performance. This woman’s performance was earth shattering. All the actors and actresses in the play said they gave the best performance of their lives due to acting with her. I had some lines with her and it was the best acting I ever did in my life due to interacting with her. They said she lifted the whole company up. After the play all she could do was console her sister that she didn’t get the part. She told her sister I am a language teacher and do acting for fun. I have never seen anyone ever before or since with a hundredth of the acting talent this woman had. She has never been in a single movie or TV show. If she had she would put everybody to shame with her amazing unique talent. This woman really IS the one in a million. The highlight of my whole life was reading my 5 lines with her.

Nobody ever claims to be a doctor who has not studied medicine (except in the case of a scam). nobody claims to be an engineer who has not studied mechanics, electronics, etc. But people claim to be artists or actors without having studied either subject or without having any idea what it is really all about. A genuine artist should have enough love of their craft that they're will to study & train for it. Sure there's been people like Eddie Van Halen but the difference is that he had passion for his craft; not just an obsession with fame. I think these two things are key ingredients; have passion for the craft itself but also be teachable and seek out the best training you can afford. Imagine an auto mechanic who was only able to fix cars when he got "lucky".

There’s hardly anything here in my city (Christchurch) The good ones that area available are in Wellington (where Weta Digital is) and Auckland where most acting talent in New Zealand is. I’m convinced about taking classes now but like you said in one of your videos, sacrifice is a cost that must be considered if I want a career out of it.

Practicing doesn’t need to require spending money for entry, like practicing with a team. Practicing is different than professional education and training. Practice after pro training should be in the form of free collaboration.

I’m a filmmaker, hypothetically, if I directed, wrote and stared in my own movie then submitted to agencies, could I get represented?
@ActingCareerCenter

You can add that to your resume and to your demo reel and it COULD help you get representation. But there is obviously no guarantee

omg! i just seen Greenland the movie and recognize your face. How awesome you were the C -17 loadmaster to tell Gerard Butler to sit down and then he told you to open the plane. That is awesome you got to be a part of such an amazing movie. I loved that movie. And even though it was just one scene that scene was everything. Sorry that you got blown up though 😂😂😂 I hope to see you in future movies and shows. Keep up the great work!! Thanks for the inspiration videos. I look forward to see where this takes me😁

That sounds like the exact opposite of a "plan". If you really want to get good at something, why WOULDN'T you work as hard as you can at improving yourself.

Kurt do you know any drama school in Los Angeles? I'm Italian and I would like to move in 2/3 years and start my career directly in LA.

there are probably hundreds of acting teachers and schools in LA. I've never lived there so I can't give you any recommendations. You can do a google search and see which ones have the best reviews. Also, no need to wait until you move to take classes. Many schools are offering classes via Zoom so you can start your training now.

I'm in Los Angeles myself. There's a ton of schools out here. No shortage of options it just depends on what kind of class you're looking for and your budget. I went to a bunch of different schools before I settled on one. Maybe if you get a chance, take a short "exploratory" trip to LA, stay a week or two and audit every class you can before you finally move here. I don't know if you can afford a short vacation but auditing different schools really helped me with my final decision. Plus you can hit up the tourist spots while you're here; visit the Chinese theater & walk of stars or hike up to the Hollywood sign. Definitely visit the Hollywood American Legion if you visit, it's a cool building with interesting history and the most amazing movie theater I've ever seen. It is the headquarters for Veterans in Media and Entertainment & was one of Marilyn Monroe's favorite hangouts.
