Great video but I thought you could have gone harder 😂. Yes the affiliation links are one big reason…people start channels reviewing Ali watches because they are cheap, also because aliexpress sellers are first to offer free watches but I also did it because I love making content and you can’t see these watches in shops so as long as you have the watch you are providing a useful service. I also have to sell most of the watches I review because I never charge a cash fee unlike MOST large channels. I also don’t like that channels review watches they haven’t handled. I only ever recommend watches I’ve handled. I still get some for free from aliexpress but actually I buy many now because it’s easier than dealing with the sellers. They can be quite demanding and even try to influence the content. I’m known for my San Martin content but I have no shame in that, they make amazing watches in my opinion and they get the most views too…there’s far more sinister and nefarious stuff going on than this trust me…this is the tip of the iceberg in terms of the ‘let’s all hate on reviewers’ subject like for example…where Bens video on dodgy watch reviewers gone? Did he remove it because he’s now started up a second channel where he does the very things he was so critical of in his video….😅 his new channel also has no connection to his main channel so it seems he wants to almost fly under the radar…be ethical on one channel and be a dodgy reviewer on the other…You can’t make a video shaming reviewers for doing what every reviewer does then set up a channel and also do it…I think that’s called hypocrisy.

I don't have a problem when reviewers make lists of watches that they are keeping their eye on, that's exactly right that everyone is doing it, but they will bring something to your attention or remind you about it. If you are interested in Horology and start a KZitem channel, you would probably like to get some return on you start up costs and then your time in making your videos. I understand that for you to become a professional youtuber, you need to publish at least three times a week to get to the big bucks, so I don't see there is much of a problem in how they create that revenue. Plus if you are seriously interested in purchasing a Ali watch you will probably find more than one channel reviewing it, for a second opinion.

Theres also a point of sustainability for a watch content creator, once they get to the point of monetisation on YT, affiliate links and the causal promoted videos is that they are not going to hang onto all of their watches that they feature so they would end up selling the ones they bought from AliExpress onto places like ebay as an example.

To play Devil's Advocate: 1. AliExpress affiliate links are now all clearly disclosed in KZitem videos. 2. The KZitem watch reviewers that make thier livings providing content (100K+ subscribers) need to produce 3 to 6 videos per week, and reviewing that many watches with fully editing the videos is nearly impossible. If a reviewer is familiar with a brand because they have reviewed several other Sea-Gull, Steeldive, Tandorio, or San Martin Watches, it really isn't a problem for them to call out new releases or top sellers, even if they are yet to produce a full review. 3. More problematic is a constant stream of positive reviews, wherein the reviewer is afraid to point out major flaws for fear the brand or seller will cut off further free review items.

I think ultimately there should also be some trust in the audience, us viewers, that many of us are capable of watching objectively and being able to decipher bias from paid reviews whether we know its paid for or not. To be honest im a bit of a cynic and assume there is gonna be bias in videos I watch and skip over all the notifications about whether its sponseres or paid or whatever. I actually dont care so much because Im gonna watch the video objectively and with my own interpretation. But thats me and everyone is different. Also important to have a healthy conversation about it on both sides of the fence. I like how your video doesnt name and shame anyone and your just providing info. There are some comments in here naming and shaming and I dont think thats helpful to anyone or the best approach to "fix" whatever the problem is. Thanks again for this video.

Thanks mk as I said in my video (at least I think I kept it in)’there is nothing wrong with making money doing this, I think the problem lies with some of the practices that show me anyways that some have transitioned slightly from doing this out of the pure love of the hobby and wanting to make money the priority and not the love of watches which leads to compromise, but you are absolutely bang on a viewer with common sense is able to figure out quite quickly whether or not someone is genuinely promoting a watch or brand or is a mere shill for it. Bias cannot be avoided, I admit my bias for Timex over Casio in some of my videos for example, but bias has nothing to do with my biggest pet peeve mentioned here which is promoting watches that you don’t even have or have had, and provide affiliate links for them. @@MirrlyonTime Amazon might not send you free watches to review, but they ALSO have an affiliate program that pays you for every order placed through the link you post. And some people make a pretty good living this way. Buy something, review it, post a link, and get paid. Of course, this works best with larger channels since the more subscribers you have the more likely that more orders will be placed. And if enough of your subscribers make orders, then it really doesn't matter what you paid for the watch.

Jody is the worst culprit, he spent years telling people he wasn’t getting paid when he was! 🤦🏻♂️ he only stopped when I emailed him and told him it was wrong! @@ILikeWatches2 Interesting information. Thank you. I just remember calling him out that the particular video was sponsored. If he didn’t do that when it was affiliate link sponsoring only then I didn’t notice it. Maybe because I never click on affiliate links. Okay, I am starting to hate him now. He now says sponsored because I emailed him and told him to stop lying about getting paid. When reviewers say sponsored they are telling you the charge a cash fee with telling you they charge a cash fee…I think it’s their way of clearing their conscience…it doesn’t go far enough.

You too don't get it! Like I said on other channels, you can load these Chinese junk watches with all the specs you want, it still has a Pagani Design stamped logo on it!!! You're just cheating yourself by buying a Rolex clone because you cannot afford it!!! I once took that route but quickly realised that I don't want to put on a chinese watch with a stupid snorkling guy stamped on it just because it looks like a Rolex. Who are we kidding? And everytime you look at that dial, you know that you're just fooling yourself. You see a brand name is everything, whether you like it or not. If you cannot buy a Rolex, you can for only 200 or 300$, buy yourself a nice Seiko or a Citizen or a G-SHOCK or an Orient... These are brands with heritage, brand recognition and durability that you'd be proud to wear. Stop promoting these watches even if you want to start a channel. It is not good advice.
@MirrlyonTime

@@cougarbatterie thanks for sharing your opinion cougar. And when I look at the dial I am not fooling myself, nobody is, I know it’s a homage watch. And just because it is a Chinese brand doesn’t mean that it isn’t a good watch m8, so no one is being kidded here, people know what these watches are and like myself many many people who can’t afford a Rolex are more than happy to own a Chinese homage watch. To your point about buying a citizen or a Seiko, I agree, for example why I won’t buy a San Martin. I’ll spend 100 bucks (or 80usd) on a Chinese homage all day and twice on Sunday before I spend 200 more when that could buy as you say a heritage piece. So don’t presume what I or anyone else is feeling (kidding ourselves) when we wear these watches, I am a proud owner of many homage pieces of watches that I cannot afford.

@@MirrlyonTime Sorry my friend, a person who buys basically a copy and paste of a Rolex or an Omega is fooling himself, even if he knows that it is a homage watch. If these Chinese watches weren't a homage to iconic brands, would you still buy them? Of course not! You just want the looks of a Rolex without paying the hefty price. If this is not cheating on yourself, what is it then? And for God sake, don't ever compare the quality of an addiesdive dive to a Seiko that makes watches since 1881. You're just being ridiculous.
@MirrlyonTime

@@cougarbatterie now who is being ridiculous. Just because a company has been making watches since 1881 or whatever doesn’t make them a better watch, a brand yes a watch no. San Martin watches are fantastic and offer far better value for dollar spec wise than a 200 dollar Seiko. And the answer to your question, would I buy an 80 dollar watch from aliexpress if it didn’t look like a Rolex, is yes, since they make good watches for the money. Move on and troll someone else m8, I believe the term used to describe you is watch snob, and you’re a big one

@@MirrlyonTime Listen how pathetic you are: did you just say that a company that makes watches since 1881, doesn't mean that they make better watches then a 5 year old Chinese brand that buys Miyota movement from the Japanese and copy great brands with zero innovation! @@cougarbatterie You have a very strong opinion on the matter. And that is fine. Hell, in some ways I agree with you. A company making watches for 100+ years adds something to the design and choices that go into making a watch. There is nothing better than having a model line for 50 years that you keep making small adjustments to in the pursuit of improving the core concept behind the watch. However, that does not always equate to an objectively superior end product. Would I still prefer the heritage over the potentially marginally better components? Personally, yes, absolutely yes. But that is a personal opinion, based on my values. Just like yours is your own personal taste and opinion. Others might have a different opinion that is equally valid (or invalid) from an objective stance. You should also consider the fact that you are interacting with a guy that is doing videos as a passion project to reflect what he likes about collecting watches. He is not obligated to cater to anyone else's tastes than his own. Be respectful or move along.
