I always wanted to meet my childhood favorite author, Brian Jacques. He passed on when I wasn't paying attention. I even wrote him a fan letter before the days of the internet and received a signed letter from him!! Sadly, due to frequent relocation, I have lost that letter. I would love to own a signed copy of one of his books, since now I will never meet him in person.

Oooh! That's sad to find out! I adore Redwall. I found him as an adult and just was enthralled with the beautiful world he created. I hope he's having a lovely tea in a beautiful meadow with his furry ones now.

@@Dumpsterfiregrace That would be so lovely!!! It is also very lovely to learn that I’m not the only grown up reading Redwall. Do you have a favorite book out of the series? I know that’s a big ask. ^_^;;;

@@hbanana7Not the person you were asking, but my fave was always Mossflower. I read them as a kid and they still mostly hold up as an adult, which is always great!

I’m a 31 year old antiquarian book collector (and dealer!!! I just opened my first online book store!) and I really resonate with this clip. I have so many favorite finds, but my best to date has to be a beat up copy of Zora Neale Hurston’s autobiography, first edition. It was limited print because she wasn’t famous yet, and so few copies remain. I plan to donate it one day to a museum or library that specializes in black literature or African American history. It has incredible intrinsic value. I picked it up for $4 from someone who simply didn’t care.

If you’re interested in donating the book to a museum, Zora Neale Hurston’s home in St. Augustine, FL is under renovation and will be turned into a museum about her life and works!

I’ve inherited several pieces that I will pass down and have found others in used bookshops and thrift stores and flee markets where someone has missed what they have. I’m not doing it for money, I just love to have them and know that they are somewhere they will be loved.

I remember you made a video about a 18th century book collector who was interested in women authors; as a result, his library is one of the most important collections of 18th century women authors!

I agree and indeed was delighted to find I had unknowingly bought a book from one of the few modern authors I like - John Fowles. It had has name plate and some correspondence from him in it. I doubt it has any extra value, but for this reader, the book has become a small treasure.

I think that when start filling my special book shelf, I'll have to go through you! Too broke at the moment to start though! I hope you have more modern authors as well. I'll need from Shakespeare-Dickens, up to Neil Giaman and Stephen King and everything in-between. 🥰

I collect copies of Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass". I don't yet have a first edition, but I have a beautiful reprint facsimile copy, and another that is virtually worth nothing, but it is interesting because it is bound in burlap. The truth is while we can place monetary values on these items, the truth "worth" or "value" of a collection has far less to do with how much money was spent to acquire it, but rather how much it means to the collector. I would much rather see a book go into the hands of a collector or institution who will cherish it than someone who is only interested in how much money they can make off of it.

Don't collect the books that everybody knows. Collect books that you like. Save lesser known books that you deem worth keeping and worth giving to you children and grand-children.

Dude even looks like a hobbit. But, imagine this great man when he’s 90 years old. Imagine the absolute wealth of information he will have. This is the human library we all need and I for one, am extremely happy that this man does his good and extremely important work. Humanity needs 10,000 of this man. Thank you sincerely for all the interesting and informative things you’ve explained so far. Please keep humanity filled with the wonder, imagination and information you search so hard to find and bring us when you can. Very respectfully -me.
