cool, I will tell you this, if you buy a fiat 500 it will be one of your favorite cars. Why its cheap, fun to use, it just puts a smile on your face and also its just example of how much of a car most people need. My 2012 Fiat 500 Sport in white, it cost $18,500 brand new in oct of 2011. I kept it until oct of 2017, I put 96,500 miles on it. I didnt have any problems with it. That car ate tires I usually had to buy tires about once year. Most of the time the average was about 10-15 months. Next thing to know there isn't very many tires you can buy for that car so if you need winter tires or even want cheap tires you bought the wrong car. They only have like 8-12 kinds. I usually bought Michelin AS3 for it. They were amazing. I was still on the original brakes, did a few brake flushes, many oil changes (7,500) many tank of gas (10.5 gal) I always put premium in it. I only had to change the headlights like once, and one battery change. So I think that is pretty good, and another thing I got a maintance contract with it so I didnt pay for anything for 3 year or 36k miles. so Fiat decided to remove that in favor of bigger discounts. Some dealer give customers the option to remove discounts in favor of getting the 3 years 36k paid maintance. if any of you get that option jump on it will save you money. or maybe you might be like oh I dont have money now for the brake job or oil change right now but it needs it. I dont like all of the hate on this car its a amazing car.

You're wrong or rather out of date about the unreliability of Fiats. An AA (Automobile Association) was very surprised when I called him to fix my 2009 500. He said Fiats are very well built, so he doesn't get asked to fix them often. Mine was broken because the dog had chewed through a sensor in the footwell for the brakes which had a knock-on effect on the automatic transmission.

If you’re talking about Europe, they are pretty good and now with merger I only think quality will go up cause of the new PSA tech. However in North or South America they are bad, like pretty damn bad, built with different cheaper materials and they don’t last very long before they have problems.

I assumed 500s were unreliable but in my queries I've found that the overwhelming experience is they are dependable. More dependable than a Mini Cooper, although the newer Minis seemed to have become more dependable. I think if you get a 500 used and can maintain it yourself, you can't do too badly. Americans don't like small cars, but if you do, a 500 might be more like Civics used to be when Japanese cars were simpler. Fiat 500s are everywhere in Europe

I own a 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth with manual transmission and purchased it when they first came out. It now has 81,000 and is my daily. The only big issue I had was the slave cylinder leaking at 70,000 miles. I took advantage of this and upgraded the clutch since the slave cylinder is concentric and located is inside the transmission. This car is easy to work on and modify. There are many aftermarket performance parts from companies such as EuroCompulsion, road race motorsport, madness 500, CAE, & AAD. Just do routine maintenance and open it up once in a while and the car will treat you fine. I know the car looks like a damn shoe; however, its fun to drive.

Yeah about fiat being bad cars: This has'nt not been true for ages. Sure in the 70's you had the 127 (wich btw was car of the year in europe) that started to rust in the same year you bought it. But they are pretty good now. You see them everywhere in southern europe when i'm on vacation. I also drive a rental panda for work and its a realy good car! Dont buy cars with 150.000 miles on it , do no maintenane and race them or overrev them.

(I think it was like 120k to my 176k) His died badly and had sooo many issues. Mine had some issues but nothing killer 1 grand+ repairs like him. Scotty, I love your channel, but on Fiat being unreliable you are dead wrong. Yes the use shitty materials for the interior but they really know how to build cars and innovate. The little Fiat F.I.R.E. 1000 engine was probably THE most reliable engine ever produce in human history.
@ChristopherCobra

Scotty - I think if we were talking pre-1990's American Fiats - you would be on the money. After all, they earned the name "Fix It Again Tony" for a reason. However, though I don't generally disagree too much with you, modern Fiat 500's are on a platform that is pushing 20 years old, and the engine is just an evolution of a 1999 design. They have been well tested by consumers by now. For the money, they are a great deal - and actually fun to drive and reliable. I would have only one real caution about used ones. Being fun to drive high rev little cars - they tend to get driven a bit hard.

I bought a new Fiat 500 w/5 speed manual transmission in 2013. It's ball to drive! In 4 years of daily driving, NO mechanical troubles at all. The only time it went to the shop was to have an optional spare tire installed, and once for a recall that dealt with limiting the clutch pedal travel. It was FUN and trouble free and I once recorded a 52 MPG. I'd still be driving it, except it just wouldn't handle 4x8 sheets of plywood very well (!), so I bought one of them *dastardly* 2017 Ram pickups two and a half years ago to fill my 'bigger' needs. So far NO problems with it EITHER.....two vehicles that are on the 'don't buy' list according to Scotty. Who would have ever guessed that I would get the only two units that never gave trouble! I'm an old 74 yrs and agree, by way of experience, with about 90% of everything Scotty says, but I do think he does have some bias... :) BTW, he is RIGHT about the Fiat's resale value... If you buy one, buy it to keep! I do enjoy his channel and subscribe.

It just felt tight for some reason. Lots of head room, but I just felt like I didn't fit in this car. And that's the damn thing, I'm of that size where I fit in most any damn car. Mazda Miata, great car, one thing people don't rave about is how ergonomically correct it is for people under 6' tall. Relation to the shifter, pedals, seat, steering wheel, height of the door sills, height/rake of the windshield, its just absolutely sublime and extremely well engineered IMO. The way you fit into the chassis on a Miata is one of the reasons people rave about how well it handles IMO.

Unfortunately had to dump the Abarth once the warranty was up. First non warranty repair was $1,600 and I just didn't make sense to pay out of picket given the history of issues. European cars are such junk, which is why they’re littered all over the roads in Europe, you actually have drive around the burned out hulks of Fiats, Alfa’s, Lancias, Audi’s, and all the rest. 2:00 red and blue coolants react with copper/brass typically found in older car radiators and will cause problems. Some of these new coolants supposedly last 5+ years blah blah blah, but it's better to change it every two years regardless of the colour. It gives you a reason to inspect the condition of the radiator, hoses and clamps if nothing else. I find it interesting that Scotty recommends more frequent oil changes yet he seems to advocate leaving coolant for 5-7years. Coolant is as vital to the moor as good oil - in fact an engine will run longer with no oil, than it will with no coolant. Don't be cheap, flush and change bi-annually.
