I know my journey has been unique. I am currently working in my first “full-time” position in a CSOC. This would be considered an entry level position. I did obtain my Bachelor’s Degree in Cybersecurity, but I don’t have any certifications like Sec+ and my only experience was a co-op of about 8 months. My starting salary is 6 figures, but that includes a large shift pay bonus for working 3rd shift, overnights. It is possible everyone, don’t give up. It’s very important to work on your personal networking and “soft skills.”

You can really make a lot of money working in cybersecurity but the problem is people are not competent enough; you're right about gurus and grifters fluffing the occupation with false promises of a high salary. I'm involved in a lot of interview panels and every time I see a candidate with just a security+ is crazy. These people think they can defend an organization's assets with such little experience its baffling really but these people are not to blame its these gurus that lie to their audience about it being easy to find a job in this field. It requires a lot of study into networking, IT hardware and software know-how, the content is at the very least mid level and not entry level at all.

Work on your resume… also apply for entry level jobs even if intern. Prove yourself then they will hire you!

I'll be getting my BS in computer information systems at the end of this fall semester. I've no experience other than the courses I've taken. I've applied to 5 various IT jobs already with no success. Then I applied for a cybersecurity internship and got it. I wasn't even asked if I have experience. They just wanted to know if I could work in groups or by myself. Be patient. Don't give up and keep moving forward. You'll soon find a job.

If you want to make a lot in cyber security, you really need to know how to code as well

@@hungry_khid1007 SAST/DAST vulnerability analysts don’t really “code” per say, but they should have coding knowledge to find vulnerabilities in the code they’re looking at. DevSecOps is another example. A software security engineer as well.
