My Wife and i just got married her ring was a beautiful 3 diamond ring 1 bigger 2 smaller lab grown for less than $2000. Im blessed to say my Wife was raised well by a hard working father who took care of 4 girls and a stay at home Mom. I've known this for years. They release only so many diamonds per year from the stockpile of diamonds. (It's a supply and demand tactic) if they were to release all the diamonds they had the price of diamonds would plummet. Because the supply would exceed the demand and the price would drop. They play everybody for fools. Give me cash for groceries screw the diamonds.

Prefer rubies or emeralds myself, but I still think diamonds are pretty. If you go in with cash, and willing to walk away without a price you like, you can get a decent price. Any more, the value is in the gold more than diamond. My son works at a cash for gold store. They can't tell real from fake stones, so they won't give you any value for them. Its all gold weight. A lot of this information needs context. 1. Diamonds are just compressed carbon. So when they say there's trillions of tons of diamonds, yes, there's trillions of tons of compressed carbon to its most solid form, but it is rare for it to be naturally large enough to be a jewel. a less compressed form of carbon is coal, but you wouldn't say coal is abundant. 2. diamonds were associated with wealth through royalty for centuries before the campaign for romanticism in the 30s. As an example, a deck of cards for at least 300 years has 4 suits that represent royalty; clubs, and spades represent spears and swords of armies of a kingdom while hearts and diamonds represented wealth and love of the royalty. tarot cards would also show diamonds as meaning wealth.... but I'm unfamiliar with how far back they go. 3. Looking at crown jewels from history, you can see diamonds everywhere surrounding saphires and rubies, but starting in the 1890s, you see rubies surrounding large diamonds.... that's because Europeans started exploring the interior of Africa and discovered larger diamonds the size grapes as opposed to the ones the rest of the world traded in which were the size of sunflower seeds. 4. also if there's other elements within the diamond, it can hue the color of the diamond. iron, calcium gold, silver.... if there's a large enough concentration of these elements in the billion year pressuring process, you get blue diamonds, red diamonds, purple diamonds. 5. i worked with concrete, and were had diamonds blades to cut through extremely tough materials. it wasn't one large diamond, it was small diamonds powdering there tips of the blades. 20 years ago, before artificial diamonds were easier to make, these blades could cost hundreds of dollars. now, they're about fifty and almost universally manufactured diamonds. 6. on the morbid side, you can pay to have a loved one made into a diamond. all life on this planet is carbon based and there was a service a few years ago that could compress the carbon of a dead relative or pet into a diamond you could add to a ring and keep with you. crazy world we're on isn't it? So diamonds naturally of a specific size and quality are extremely rare. it's like basketball players. if you are broad enough with these definition there's millions of basketball players in the world. Go to any gym or playground and you'll see a couple. but there's only one MJ. In regards to antimatter; atoms are positive polarized protons and negative polorized electrons. Antimatter is a new experimental element with a positive charged electron and a negatively charged proton. it's made an atom at a time, that's why a gram would be that much. one gram of it would wipe out the planet.

I actually booked the “new voice” of De Beers for their television commercial campaign in 1999 after several call-backs. It was the biggest commercial casting in LA at that time. I ended up doing 2 television commercials, but it was short lived, as the SAG commercial strike took place in 2000. The ad agency ended up replacing me with a non-union voice actor. I had no idea at that time how dirty the Diamond industry was.

Maybe 40 years ago there was a cover story feature article in The Atlantic market value of diamond was created by De Beers. There wasn't a lot of interest in diamonds before the appetite for them was stimulated... and there's certainly was not a custom acquiring diamond wedding rings. This has got to be in some archives somewhere

De Beers had the largest lab produced diamond plant in the world in Nuffield Springs South Africa in the 80's. They had another plant in Shannon Ireland. They merged the plants in South Africa then , sent the ultra high pressure presses back to Ireland a few years later. These were presses that mimicked the natural diamond formation process. Chemical vapour deposition (if I recall) was the competing technology. It had a huge advantage in that it could produce wafers of diamonds that have many industrial uses. Primarily in heat dissipation applications. I'm relying on 40 year old memory here of something I had short-lived associated passing interest in.

Pat I love you and your Podcast , Im a South African entrepreneur I made my money in CTI industry I then obtained mining rights in South Africa ; Namibia and Angola to mine diamonds many geological test where done to insure that we were mining in the correct place we spent more than $10 Million US in 48 months we only found about 30 carrots of diamonds, so if diamonds are so easy to find please let me know where to mine I have contacted about 60 mine owners in Africa and across the world to just get an update on their mining success and I can assure you its much tougher than what your podcast suggests about 95% of all diamond mines are bankrupt after five years, the other thing to notice is that 80 - 90 % of all diamonds mined are only fit for industrial usage re: drill-bits etc and are sold for next to nothing, yes De Beers have pulled of a huge marketing ploy they have also managed to employ thousands of Africans and promoted the jewelry industry world wide to enable participants to feed their families do you really think a Ferrari is worth what you are paying for it NO!!! never you dont buy a diamond / Ferrari you become it thats what its all about thank you for great content God Bless

Diamonds are one of the stupidest goddamn things on the planet Those who have purchased them deserve them Bitcoin is actual scarcity You can actually buy hardware wallets now that have an NFC chip in them that allow you to store bitcoin digitally in a ring. That’ll be the future. You could wear a ring that has $1 million worth of bitcoin on your finger.

I dabbled in out of my home jewelry business. I learned this long ago. They also set the ‘fashion’ therefore price of what gemstone will be “in” (higher priced) for the this season? I also learned that humans do not trust a normal price for jewelry, they prefer to pay the inflated jewelry store prices and brag about it. However Collecting excellent quality natural well cut diamonds can be a good investment if you do not pay over wholesale ! T can be done. Buy “used”, jewelry stores don’t pay squat for used jewelry and stones so YOU buy them!

The point of a wedding band is for it to be meaningful for you and your partner, not other people. I certainly don't need the diamond industry to validate my marriage. My wife and I spent less than $50 on our wedding bands and have been together for over 10 years. The money we saved on a small wedding and no wedding band we invested into real estate in 2018. We tripled our money. Suck it diamond industry. Suck it wedding industry.

"Cluster Rings" are still the most memorable and hold up for their value. The idea is that you pick the metal she/he prefers, pick the colors they'd like to see together, use the smaller rocks for higher definition, have jeweler go hamm creating an art piece with everything selected! There's designers that create amazing work for less than a standard carot ring and it's near specific to one's taste.

I see lab diamonds (and in my case -- moissanite -- I like rainbows) in a similar way that Rand saw skyscrapers as a way to honor what man has achieved over his natural state or environment. When it comes to transportation or shelter or a number of other things, we don't judge its quality by its closeness to nature, but by its overcoming of nature in terms of speed, comfort, durability, tailored design, time- and effort- saving, etc. Working in explosives made me especially appreciate the ingenuity and perseverance of humanity, and some folks specifically.

Great breakdown on the De Beers diamond story, really shows the power of marketing. For entrepreneurs, remember that creating a perceived value can sometimes be as crucial as the actual value. A strong narrative can drive demand and pricing power, just like De Beers did with diamonds.

In South Africa, if you buy a new engagement ring with a huge solitaire, you pay like hell. If you decide to sell that same ring yrs later, it can't reach the original price at all. I inherited a diamond from my gran and it's worth very little compared to a new ring, same size diamond, both real gold.

This has been known in SA for a long time. A diamond ring will only fetch a second hand price based on the gold grade of the ring. They will pay nothing for the diamond.
