I think the fact that the film was so stripped back, and focuses predominantly on the psychological damage that can happen inside a person's mind, resulted in the film striking a particular cord with me. It's not the super natural that scares me, it's the human mind and how it can become poisonous and lead us to do evil things. THIS is why the film is so good and why it's a timeless classic. It didn't need anything but the story line and a couple of actors.

Psycho trivia: Vera Miles's scream was reportedly dubbed by actress Jeanette Nolan, who, along with Perkins's friend Paul Jasmin was slated to have their voices "blended together" with actress Virginia Gregg, who was ultimately the best and ONLY voice used for mother in all three scenes! Despite what Wikipedia falsely states. Information that only a longtime Hitchcock fan and movie history buff would know. To those who argue that Wikipedia says otherwise, I simply say to listen to the three scenes with Mother's voice. All three scenes with Mother have the exact same single voice. Case closed.

Vera Miles gives one of the greatest screams in film history here. It’s absolutely bloodcurdling. And also understandable - not over the top at all considering the situation. Who WOULDN’T scream like that after seeing what she saw?

These comments amaze me. People judging a movie they haven't seen all the way through. Discussions about a TV show that has nothing to do with Hitchcock's original vision. Television and all the blood and gore of horror movies since Psycho have muddled the minds of people too young to appreciate the original.
@Xehanort10

Vince Corvaia Just because the Bates Motel TV show has "nothing to do with Hitchcock's original vision." doesn't mean it isn't good. Hitchcock didn't create Psycho. Robert Bloch did. Hitchcock directed the 1960 movie adaptation of Bloch's 1959 novel. And the original Psycho is a great film but I prefer the sequels. People should like the original Psycho because of the story,acting,characters,music and atmosphere not just because it's a Hitchcock film which seems to be the only reason most people prefer the original to the sequels.

Maybe a little bit. It certainly was creepy and unsettling and the part at the end where Norman's being explained does kind of go on a bit too long with what we can already deduce. I don't it's really fair of critics to harshly judge literal decades worth of movies by tossing them so mindlessly into the dumpster (many of which they skip over or just not see) and in stark contrast throw this movie upon a golden pedestal.

It goes without saying that Psycho is a classic, a ground breaker, and supremely unforgettable and creepy. If a film can impact viewers so deeply that every single time they take a shower they have a brief moment where this film crosses their mind, then that is one masterful film indeed. It's a classic in every sense of the word, and yes, definitely a masterpiece (even if I prefer the first half over the second, I just love Janet Leigh's performance.) With that said, I think that Gus Van Sant's Psycho is overly shat upon. Just because a film is a classic, doesn't mean another artist isn't allowed to experiment with it. And while yes, it is nearly shot for shot, Sant still adds his own personal and unique touches to it, like subliminal imagery, equally beautiful cinematography, and ever so small tweaks to key scenes and moments. Especially in this scene, in the 98 version a birdcage is added, and the sounds of flapping birds and squawks can be heard, and the lighting is also a tad different casting disorienting heavy shadows. I also like how Sant didn't up the gore or add any cheap scares for a modern audience, he simply reworked the material with his individual style and presented it to a modern audience (which he has stated was the main reason he did the film in the first place, to bring the film to a younger, modern, audience who wouldn't seek out the original.) I think it's highly underrated. But I know I'm in the minority.

I saw a revival of this movie in the theatre. When Vera Miles looked at the cellar door and began to go down the stairs, the audience was saying "No, no, don't go down there!" When she approached Mrs. Bates there was a lot of gasping and when the chair turned around the theatre was full of terrified screaming! The world's best "don't go down the basement" moment!

But Anthony Perkins absolutely deranged look of pure excitement like a kid on Christmas morning was the most memorable and horrifying part of the movie for me. He looks genuinely thrilled at being able to claim his next victim, I wonder if its this face his previous ones had the misfortune of seeing.

Before watching Psycho, I've seen a huge amount of psychological thrillers and horrors, since 2007 when I found love for this genre until now, about 2-3 horrors per week, all kind of them... This scene, in freaking 2014, kept me on the edge of my chair, gave me chills and made my heart reach the throat... One of the most intense scenes ever, it comes with a magnificent story build and outstanding acting, 10/10 to Mr.Hitchcock!
