I find the more expensive the art supplies is the less I use it so I don't "waste it", when it's cheaper I feel like I can experiment more 🤷♀️

This video was so lovely and before I even finished it I hopped on my bike to go to a second hand store in search of cute trays/pallets. Didn't find that, but it was a lovely bikeride and I got a nice picture book about knights and castles for my shelf of ''reference books''. I highly recommend looking through the children's section of second hand bookstores. Truly full of treasures! Anyway I just came back home and watched the rest of the video, lovely advice thank you so much :)

Oooh the way you showed the supplies and then what you made with them 10/10. And you were giving me *best friend's cool big sister* vibes at the end when you were talking about practicing. And that is such important advice! Smash the misconception that you can only be born with artistic talent. 👊

When I was first getting into watercolor, I bought a palette from the dollar store (it was a small set with lots of binder, but wasn’t too chalky), some cheap brushes from a craft store, and Canson XL mixed media paper I had leftover from a drawing class. I used that paint until I ran out of a couple of colors before I let myself invest in a better set because I wasn’t sure if I would stick with it. Since then I’ve bought several palettes and gifted a couple of them to some budding tween artists, but most of my improvement is from practice, not from the nicer supplies

I relate so much to thrifting supplies and getting stuff mega on sale, it makes me feel better about cutting corners where it’s ok and saving up for 1 or 2 things! I grew up lower income so it was my normal but now it also makes me think about being more sustainable when companies and some artists tend to say ohhhhh, has to be the best of the bestttt

I love your love for cheap sketchbooks and art supplies, I am an art supply snob and I am trying not to be but I can’t help but hate cheap art supplies, or rather, not cheap but “bad” quality, I think there is a difference but I have been drawing so much on a bad quality cheap sketchbook so much the last few days and having a blast compared to my expensive watercolour sketchbook lol no pressure and just fun Which is so important!

I studied lustration and the Art Creations are my favourite sketchbooks ever! I’ve tried so many, I am very picky about paper thickness, paper colour, binding, paper grain… I’ve tried so many sketchbooks that felt off. The only one i liked were the moleskin sketchbooks, but i now prefer these art creations sketchbooks because I don’t feel precious about them because of their price point. A definite must-try for anyone on the look out for a sketchbook!

Love this! Thanks for sharing your favourite things 💕 My background is in graphic design, and the same is true - a fantastic computer does not make a fantastic designer. A great artist or designer will be able to make amazing things in spite of the tools they have. When we have access to better tools, then that just makes the art last longer, or makes it easier to get the look we're after (eg higher pigmented paint often needs less layers.) Oh! Also cotton paper tends to absorb more water and may buckle less when it gets super wet.

Maybe you have Heard of it somewhere or maybe If you Interested in trying new sketchbook someday, i can recommend the Art creation royals talens sketchbooks, they comes in Various sizes/formats and have Many different cover Colors to choose from. Although im Not very sure how much the Price will differ in your Country and Here in germany but they are very affordable and nice to use. With a off white or kinda creamy color paper and a thickness from 140gsm they can handle most of the materials you are using on. Just found your Channel today and immediately fell in love with your colorful and messy/free hands Art 🎨❤ Best Greeting from Germany 🥰

i zooooooooomed to this video so fast omg hehe! ooooh so many good tips! i've also been trying unconventional brushes lately... but not in the sense that they're not brushes, just in the sense that they're... *maybe not made for painting*... hehe. cheap make-up brushes from the chemist or $2 shop, car detailing brushes, those tiny baby tooth brushes... they all make interesting and exciting textures! as well as those cheapos that *are* advertised as being for artwork :-) i'm a brush hoarder. everything's an art tool if you're open to it! don't even get me started! hahaha ❤🧡💛💚💙💜 excellent video! TEN STARS! haha

When my “disposable” Pigma Microns or Artline pencils are dry but the nibs are still good….I just pull the nib with tweezers and drip Bombay/India ink in with a syringe… cheap AND waterproof! I also use a pencil sharpener on my Twistables to get a good point….works a treat!

Oh my god, what a stellar video! I absolutely love when artists show their materials. I was actually super curious myself about those Chinese fountain pen inks, so I got them too. Can you tell I'm super susceptible to buying any art supplies if they look good? XD Haha, but they're delicious alright. It's a shame they're so hard to get cos I'd definitely want to grow my collection of them. Have you ever tried Troublemaker Inks? They have a similar range of polychromatic inks, which are quite beautiful as well. Haha I giggled when I saw the size of your Holbein gouache tubes! They're massive! XD I'm so used to only having the teensy baby tubes. I didn't know they even came that large; that's good to know. Also that half-moon shaped palette not getting in the way is an amazing idea. Watching your videos is always such a joy. They're a really good constant reminder to keep playing around with materials, cos I can really easily fall into the trap of getting too precious about the stuff I really like.

Brushes are my favourite way to paint. I think I might be a bit of a brush connoisseur tbh. 😆 I have so many for al different mediums. I have special soaps for them and dry and reset them with a cotton cloth every time I dip them in water and change colour while painting. God! I Sound anal!😂

Just about the watercolour paper discrepancy. This could be caused by the sizing on the paper expiring. Sizing prevents the water from being absorbed into the paper, like it would with normal printer paper. Watercolour paper is internally and externally sized usually, and the external sizing can expire over time, or due to bad storage conditions. When this happens, the paper no longer retains the ability to control water absorption. This causes bleeding, feathering, dull colours and often times the paper gets soaked to the other side with water. If you buy watercolour paper and it does this, it is worth contacting who you purchased from and getting another pad, especially if it is cotton paper. It is also why stocking up on paper is a bit like playing russian roulette, because the paper can expire and become unusable. My A3 100% cotton saunders pad just expired, and I was saving it for when I was feeling more confident. So, moral is, make sure you use your paper. I think Aussie weather might exacerbate this process, from heat and humidity. Aren't we lucky :) Keep your paper somewhere cool and out of light. Hope this helps! And make sure you check when buying new watercolour paper that it is sized correctly by doing a sample swatch, just in case, even if you don't plan on using it immediately.

I totally agree art supplies doesn't matter if they are cheap my daughter uses Wilton and Norton water color tubs and cheap dollar store fine paint brushes. Whereas i use any water color paints yes they do make a difference real cheap gives you a powder effect but if mixed to make new tones who cares then for brushes since I'm in Pakistan i use a local one called corona. Very cheap but works for me, i have to rediscover art supplies back in aus for any new projects. But really i only make themed baby books for my future grandkids.
