I have been saddle hunting for two years now and have spent numerous days in the saddle. Some for a few hours and some for all day sits. After two years I feel comfortable giving you a few things I like and a few things I don't like. All of these are base on personal opinion and you may have different thoughts and feelings. But with all of this being said, I have no intention of giving up on Saddle Hunting because I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of sitting in the Saddle. Let's Start with the Cons
CONS
1. Not as comfortable as a Treestand: I have found that getting comfortable in a saddle has been more difficult than getting comfortable in a treestand. This has a lot to do with the fact that my saddle rides up on me, and I did not have the Tethrd Backstrap until this year.
2. Not as stable to shoot out of as a Treestand: I don't feel that a tree saddle is as easy to get stable in as a treestand is when shooting. I feel that my effective range is much closer in a Saddle than in a Treestand. I think this is due to the fact that in a saddle you are hanging from a tree vs standing vertically.
3. Can't comfortably hang in every tree: One of the big selling points of saddle hunting is the fact that you are able to hang in almost any tree. While this is true, it's not true that you can comfortably hang in any tree. Leaning trees are much more difficult to hang in comfortably than straight trees.
4. Hanging a long ways from the tree: When leaning/standing in a saddle, you are a long ways from the tree. So, anything that comes from the left or right of you is easily able to make out your side profile. In a treestand, you generally stand right next to the tree if you are standing.
5. A lot of movement for 360 Shooting: One of the big selling points in Saddle hunting is the fact that you can shoot 360 degrees around you and around the tree. This is true, but it is much more difficult than what is described. There are positions when shooting 360 that require an unrealistic amount of movement.
6. Can't see behind: Generally when setting up your saddle, you like to have a tree between you and the trail you are hunting so that you can hide behind the tree. This is very difficult when there are numerous trails running through trees that you are hunting. The main issue here is when deer approach or are moving behind you. This requires a lot of movement that is not covered by a tree to see what is going on behind you.
PROS
1. Hide behind a tree: My last con leads me into my first pro which is the fact that you are hiding behind a tree when a deer approaches from the front. This allows for much more cover and security. You are also able to work your way around a tree so that you can keep the tree between you and the deer that is moving in front of you.
2. Packable: A saddle setup is much more packable than a treestand setup. this is due mostly to the fact that the saddle platform is much smaller than the treestand. You will still have the same sticks and a harness of some form, but the saddle takes the cake when it comes to the platform vs treestand.
3. 360 Shooting: While it is very difficult to actually shoot 360 degrees, I feel like it is not a bad thing to be able to do if needed. There is always the chance that the movement won't be picked off.
4. Can hang in a wide array of trees: While you're not necessarily able to hang in every tree comfortably, you're able to hang in almost every tree anyway. It takes a different type of tree to hang for a whole day vs just deal with it through a 4 hour sit.
5. Nice to film from: I have found that a saddle is very nice to film from. It's nice to be able to have the camera in front of you on the tree rather than back behind you on the tree. I feel much more versatile when filming from a saddle.
6. Lightweight compared to a treestand: A saddle is just inherently light compared to a treestand, a lot of it is due to the fact that it is more packable. In a treestand, you would generally use the same climbing method. You would also have a harness that would be similar weight to saddle. But the comparison of the weight of a saddle platform vs the treestand is what really sets it apart. Also in saddle hunting you can make it even lighter if you decide to hunt off of the top step rather than the platform.
