Jeff... you have been my savior recently. Everything you're sharing is spot-on for my pain issues. I am no athlete, just a 45yo women trying to start taking care of my body. I've been doing yoga for a year now and recently have been having nearly debilitating pain on the outside of my elbow. Strangely, it's severely triggered when I settle in to go to sleep, with my elbow bent at 90 degrees, hand up by my head, palm face-up. It is always super sore when I wake up and I couldn't (still can't quite) imagine how my bed/sleeping position could be contributing. BUT, after watching this video, I'm compelled to look more at the planks and downward dogs I'm doing in my daily yoga. I'm also a computer programmer so I'm constantly on my laptop. Makes a lot more sense now. Thank you!!

He explained that its possible that the muscle in question is being overloaded due to a weakness from other related muscles. Find what exercise causes pain, which for me were easy bar skull crushers. I noticed that while doing them I was bending my wrist upward to stabilize my arms and that put tension on my outer elbow muscle for too long and caused soreness and inflammation. I corrected it by tilting my wrists inward, reducing time under tension and adding forearm strengthening exercises. 👍

I had it bad in both arms for about 6 months. It’s caused by snapping your arms straight at the bottom of a curl, or bottom of a pull-up or at the top of a push up. Fixed it with ice, rest and massage. I learned to control the weight at the bottom of the curl and it hasn’t come back in 10 years.

Fantastic, on the mark. I am a physical therapist. I have not been at it that long. I suspected my golfers elbow problem came from my shoulders. And no I don't play golf. I just needed someone to confirm it for me. Almost embarrassing for me how hard it is to cure something as common as golfers/tennis elbow. I already know that the make up of the tendons in the hands can cause problems with this pathology, but so good to hear someone relate it to the shoulders as well. I get so many good tips off you personal trainers as opposed to other physical therapists. I too find it can complain when I do bicep curls. I do find if I use dumbells and rotate my hands internal external, it helps. Probably bringing a more even load to the tendons. Pays not to lift too heavy too. You know your stuff. Good work. Keep it up.

My elbow is night and day!!! I basically trained more my shoulder area because I did sustain a left shoulder injury 4 years ago. So after I watched this I payed close attention to what I was doing and realized my shoulder is still giving me issues putting more pressure on the tennis elbow. (Between recording, working out and just over all being active.) So I trained really light weight (literally 100 shoulder rotations 1 sets 2 x's day (morning and night) I couldn't really grip and wanted to focus healing so dint do any weight at first list body weight.) After that moved into light weight lifting for the shoulders and now I am able to grip again and climbing back up on weight I can lift, and able to play drums for 2 hours without having those jolts of pain.) Its still healing, but like anything else it takes time. Patience and practice is key. I hope this helps those of you in pain. *I take no medication at all.

Hey Jeff, this was a revelation, I've been having Ulnar-side wrist pain & neck pain on a number of occasions now, and I can't hold a dumbbell at all with my wrist, but from this video, it highlighted another concern that I've been having, that the shoulder of that side, I'd been worrying was internally rotating a little (which I wasn't happy about admittedly) and I now think that's where it has manifested itself from, being restricted in my ability to supinate my arm (like when doing a curl). I think if I work on getting my shoulders back into proper position, my wrist and neck will be free to open up and the pain will go!.... Amazing Jeff! Love these videos, among the others of course! Thanks!

Thank you for giving insight on this! I have tennis and golfer pain for almost 7 years now, it gets aggravated by phone use. This issue got triggered when i had a back issue ( a chiropractor messed up my back) and it was out of alignment for soo many months because no one could fix why i had this back pain and then it triggered this nervse pain in my arms. This explains my symptoms soo much better because 99.9 % of physio i went to only treated the spot of the pain and told me to do the arm strech. which was tottaly useless for me and i still have my pain. I am going to work on upper body strengthening and keeping my rib alingment proper to avoid nerve pinching due to weak upper body posture.

I play a lot of and know quite a bit about tennis and can tell you with 100% certainty that the serve will not cause tennis elbow. It does cause golfer's elbow though, as one would expect, on the inside of the elbow. So does the forehand. Tennis elbow is most likely caused by the single handed backhand or backhand volleys. So traditional knowledge and basic intuition are perfectly correct in this case. I do agree that breakdown of certain muscles around a joint can cause damage to other joints, that's a valid point. And in actual fact, those wrist or forearm strengthening exercises are the way to heal or avoid tennis or golfer's elbow. I recommend the use of the flexbar.

This is an interesting topic and idea on what is causing tennis elbow. I have found that there are many causes of tennis elbow which can be due to injury to the joint due to trauma, muscle imbalance in the forearm as stated in this video, myofascial restrictions in the forearm, wrist immobility, interosseous membrane restrictions which may have been due to trauma as well. All of these are possible causes (and most likely not all) for tennis elbow because it causes any of the following, 1) the previous list causes the radial head to move off axis, 2) create a hypermobility in the joint causing it to move out of place frequently, 3) compress the radial head into the lateral epicondyle of the humerus. There are more specific movements that occur, but they vary from patient to patient and the 3 listed are the most common. As soon as you get the joint positioned correctly, the pain will alleviate at least 80% instantly if not 100%. You then need to treat what is causing the joint to move improperly and regain muscle strength that has been lost in different movement patterns due to the condition (elbow flexion/extension combined with forearm pronation/supination or any complications that are found in the wrist). If the radial head is not moving as it is supposed to, then you cause impingement of soft tissue or create the "overuse" of the elbow because of repetitive motion of the radial head repetitively rubbing into the extensors of the forearm. For those of you that have not gotten relief from strengthening your wrist flexors I hope this information helps explain why that may be the case. I enjoyed the video and the further look into tennis elbow. I recognize that I am very late in replying to this video, but what the heck.

I went to a physical therapist and the treatment included dry needling in my bicep and tricep, suction cups in the same spots and electric shocks. This was just the first session but I’m not sure if the type of treatment is correct as it was somewhat painful. I appreciate the comments.

I have pain on the inside of my elbow and you can see the bone too. Not sure if its normal or theres anything you can do to help? Please do it worries me!

Genrally It could be from any muscle around your elbow. Tightness, trigger points, Lack of mobility in the shoulders might be contributing to that too. Remove the trigger points around the surrounding muscles, and perform stretching and mobility exercises.

Good points on this, I’m getting the start of frozen shoulder on the same side as the tennis elbow/ forearm pain. It figures....I’ll treat the frozen shoulder and hopefully it will sort the tennis elbow. In my case, I’m a photographer and I think many hours with a heavy camera has done the damage. Thanks for the cause video.

I want to know what the "right things" are to strengthen the muscles and forearm extensors and flexors (arm and wrist). Is there a video showing the strengthening exercises to fix tennis elbow?

it's awesome your video has given me confidence in some of the exercises I've been working on to cure my aliments. Your video is being watched by a person sitting at a computer and you sir are definitely pumped full of readiness. it's a bit difficult to stay calm and not start jumping around to different pages, because your energy did hype me up. I don't know maybe an extra person in your video that isn't as hyped which I would relate to and be more apt to wait with. thanks again

I got mine from cable curls. It doesn't hurt much normally. But when I do curls, I can feel the pain. So I stopped doing curls since last week. I'll wait for it to heal naturally. But in the meantime, can I do these exercises below?: - pushups, - tricep pushdowns, - Cable Front raises, - Cable side lateral raises, - pull ups Should I avoid any of these during the healing period? Don't really want to miss all of these for weeks. Can anybody advice please?

I developed elbow and forearm trouble in my dominant arm quite recently. The apparent possible causes will either relate to weight training, or my job as a package handler which involves very fast grasping and moving of packages, some of which are fairly heavy, on a conveyor. The job seems to be the thing that gives me more enduring pain after the period of exertion, but I have no idea what specific things in either activity may have caused this condition to suddenly crop up.

The easiest way to get rid of this type of elbow pain is stretching a band with your fingers, like those thick rubber bracelets people wear, something like that, stretch it only using your fingers, one hand of course. Including your thumb

I agree! Love your style! I think I hav tennis elbow. It's been hurting for 2 months. I started splitting wood last year with a maul (4lb) for anger management and pitching horseshoes for mental therapy during the breakup of long marriage. I can't afford a doc so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I am trying to solve wrist, forearm, elbow and shoulder pain from playing piano. Initially as a result from an overstitching injury of the thumb about a year ago, now continued pain in these areas. MRI, ultrasound, physiotherapy and a visit to a hand specialist has turned nothing up other than what the specialist deemed to be normal wear and tear. Something is causing it. I am a 46 year old beginner pianist, so not like I'm playing any really hard demanding pieces.

Well, i am exploring this video because my phyiso guy has me doing quite a bit of direct forearm strengthening exercises. Kind skeptical. i appreciate hearing more input about the problem. I am not being told its tennis elbow, but it does fit the same kind of symptoms, pain on the outside and surface of the forearm, just part way beyond the elbow, exactly where you were pointing. My injury is work related. I watched this cause a friend said a certain cream helped him. I really liked the explanation, telling me, as i expected, that information is vital to the healing process. If you don't believe the diagnostics, you wont buy into the cure (exercises). I am 57, my forearms are real tight on the inside (due to work), the last thing i need is working my problem the wrong way.. Not sure what to do, may keep poking around on the internet, may try another physio connection.

I've had to stop bicep curls and lateral raises because they gave me this . I'm going to ditch all isolation movements . I never used to do them I'd just do power and Olympic pluss pull ups . Never had an injury in 20 years working out that way .

mine's not bad at all, I have mild discomfort if I rest the bony part of my elbow on a table for example after playing a lot of tennis. What is a mystery to me is the location of the pain, it is right on the bone, the olecranon. Everyone else seems to say it's in the forearm or on the inside for golfer's elbow.

In the case of the tennis serve, how is preloading of the wrist not a function of the wrist extensor muscles? The action of preloading the wrist is wrist extension.

life is hell for me. for 6-7 years i've never been able to fully extend my arm, and i only became aware of it after i started working out. i have reduced range of motion in my left elbow which also affects my right arm since i do calisthenics mostly, not many isolation exercises. everytime i try to extend my arm, i feel an acute pain, almost as if my forearm bones were going to break. i dont know what to do, im desperate. i dont feel motivated to work out anymore because it's not worth the pain.

Thanks man. Going through the exact thing. Ongoing for several months actually. The dr wants to inject me with steroids and thank God I found this vid. I have the rounded shoulder problem and I was actually looking at that vid and glanced down and saw this one. I think I have my answer. Hopefully after I do the exercises to fix my posture the pain in my elbow goes away. Fingers crossed

Everything you said makes sense. I have bilateral lateral epicondylitis right now and I've had it for 4 months. I can't begin to tell you how debilitating it has been for me. All of the "conventional" treatments havent' worked. I have tried accupunture, electric muscle stimulation, ART (active release techniques), chiropractic, deep tissue massage, therapeutic ultrasound, trigger point release etc. All of these treatments were focused on my elbow but what I truly believe is that my weakness is in either my rotator cuff muscles or my scapular stabilizers. What exercises would you recommend to strengthen the scapular stabilizers?
