People keep fat tails in rainforest setups, which is detrimental to their health.Yes, they do need humidity but they live in deserts and retreat to moist places when they sleep. Gradients are better. I know a guy that breeds these cuties, and he used to keep em in all round humid enclosures. A few of them developed respiratory infections. When he made the vivariums drier with moist hides, they did much better. Just saying readers.

Both my fatties are in semi-tropical bioactive setups, humidity sits around 50%. In do a light misting a couple times a week, and water the plants once a week. Both seem to be doing very well in this setup. I mist a bit more heavily when they’re shedding.

I have 2 of each species. My fatties are docile but definitely shyer, they tend to hide more often and are a bit less active than my leopard geckos. Both my leos roam around their cages and come to the glass when I enter the room. Fatties also tend to be pickier with food. One of my fatties will only eat crickets and refuses anything else.

My advice if you can't decide on which one, get both 😁 I've had Leopards for years, and just recently bought an AFT, and she's doing great. He is definitely right about temperament. My AFT is super shy. Granted she's still juvenile, but ive had multiple juvenile Leopards and they are on average much more social. My AFT hasn't hissed at or bit me yet, and is fine about being handled once she's out of the tank, but she rarely comes out of her humid-hide on her own.

I’ve had both of my fat tails for nearly a year. The female is more shy, but will make herself noticed if she’s hungry. The male is really subdued but will also come out here and there even with my kids playing. I have never had either hiss at me. However I’ve had them since they were 4.4gr and 2.2gr respectively. I got them from the breeder about 2 weeks after the last baby hatched from their clutch. I also do my best to handle them as frequently as I can, preferably every other day. Or one in the morning as I make my coffee and one in the evening. I love their docile nature, although I’ve never held a leopard gecko at all. I just went straight for the fat tails predominantly because they aren’t as common. Who wants to be normal? 🤣

I wouldn’t personally but you could always experiment with an “in between” humidity gradient etc. however, if it ended up being a problem (too low for one, too high for the other) you would need a separate front opening terrarium on stand by to immediately separate. I assume you’re asking as a potential pet parent, and not as a breeder.

20 gallons is the bare minimum here in the United States, though I don't agree with it. I will say, 30+ gallons is much better. Considering you need at least three hides, taking up space. You want a decently sized water dish, this will reduce the space. Then your animal in a 20 gallon will be a 10 maybe 13 gallon tank. As well as, I don't recommending co-habbing leopard gecko. African Fat tailed geckos in general are much greater to co-hab. Other then that, great care!
@MrsJosephCorica
Жыл бұрын
I haven’t heard one person say they’d recommend lower than 40 gallons for a pet, but you can’t go by gallons anyway, you need to go by the literal measurements. Pet Supply Chains don’t just scam you on morphs/names, they’ll lie about anything to make more money. I’ve been sold 2 “40 gallons” one is more of a “20 gallon” for reference. I hate everything about it besides the lid and pull out tray locking in place. But the locks are not even secure. It’s old. Definitely do your research.

I wouldn’t recommend it for beginners. Leo’s are a lot more territorial and temperamental. My AFT male is super friendly, calm, and sweet. My Leo’s are….well think of it like humans (this time, and this time only) he is like a good guy very gentlemanly. My Leopard Gecko females are like decent girls, but a little stuck up. Will (literally) walk all over you or kick you, if they don’t want to be messed with. He is very tolerant of me and other geckos. However, I would personally never house them together. I have also personally never seen it done at all, so I can’t tell you if it’s been done successfully. If you’re a breeder and or stay at home 24/7 and manipulate their care to be as close to what they BOTH need, MAYBE it could be done. But again, I would never recommend for a beginner parent or breeder.

I could NEVER rate Leopard Geckos higher than AFT’s and you’re wrong, even a quick google search and you’ll see AFT’s are almost always more laid back and social. Your Leopard Geckos are older than your AFT, they’ve been handled more. There is a reason your AFT is shy and it’s not a fault of her own. My AFT is way more calm sweet and laid back than any of my 12 Leopard Geckos. If you touch his nose and ask will you give kissy, he does. All my Leopard Geckos have always been more flighty, and feeling threatened no matter how much they’ve been socialized. AFT’s have always been known to be slower, calmer and more handleable. Leo’s are definitely more temperamental. I don’t enjoy them anywhere near as much for that reason. They will have more morphs when we work with them more and add more Leo genes. You also should go by literal measurements and not gallons. I’ve been sold a 40 gallon and 2, 70 gallons both being 36x18

Personally my boys have always been so much more easily tamed. My girls have always been bitches. LOL. I’m playing, they aren’t bitches they are just more skittish. They are prey animals, so they are naturally built with an internal instinct that alerts them to danger. We are big scary monsters to them, until fully tamed.

Could it be possible to breed them to make a hybrid? Similar to how the new Caledonian ones can.
