I had the original GO and than upgraded the newer GO2. I think people who buy this need to understand its limitations and that this camera is only meant for capturing the moments and not intended for continuous recording. The original GO had even shorter recording time and less memory. I was happy with that, because I was only using it to capture short 30 sec or 1 min clips and than joining those clips together to make an interesting short video. For me, being able to capture 10 min clips on the GO2 is already a huge improvement over the original go (Also it only manage to capture 2 x 10 min or 21 X 1 min video clips on a single charge, when its out of its charging case). But I find myself only using it to capture mostly 30 secs to 1 minute clips instead. For me the most significant improvement is the improved video quality over the original GO, hence many reviews about its video quality Vs the Gopro's. I think people will be disappointed if they bought this expecting it to be like a Gopro for continuous recording.

I agree, but I think their marketing has aimed it at “action” cameras and hence I needed to point out the deficiencies when used for that purpose. There’s always work arounds for all products and I’ve found a few so will be making videos on them but whilst this isn’t a terrible product it’s far from perfect also and hopefully by highlighting the issue it may mean the go3 is even better. 👍🏽

@@MATechKZitem The original did not have wireless file transfer, it need to be put back into its charge case and than the charge case must be connected to the phone or the computer via a wire. The Transfer speed is about the same for wired file transfer for both... With the wireless transfer on the Go2, its understandably a bit slower than wired transfer... but to me its acceptable and not tooo shabby. I just select download, let it do its thing and I go do other things and before you know it, its all transferred. i like the convenience of wireless file transfer, it can transfer the files to my phone, even when it's back in its charge case and inside my backpack, with my phone in my pocket!

Have you not had the issue of it not transferring when the battery runs low or do you never use it that much? The problem I have is on several occasions when I’ve recorded a longer video (more than 5mins) the file size is so big that it takes forever to transfer via Wi-Fi so I end up connecting it up and just transferring it to my MacBook instead. Both are around the same speed for me, it’s just with the wired connection I know it’ll complete where as with the Wi-Fi transfer I’ve had it just hand or fail to transfer on too many occasions and then you have to start over again. With it plugged in atleast it’s being charged at the same time so won’t die on you before the transfer completes

Thank you, it means a lot to me when I know my videos help people. I don’t mean to put people off buying products, however what is important is that they’re aware of any limitations before they buy and that was my issue with all the videos I watch on the product, the fact that no one really put across the issues that affect “normal” day to day usage. As I’ve said it’s not a terrible product but some things are infuriating and almost put you off using it, so I’d rather people are aware and can then adapt their expectations of what the camera can do BEFORE purchasing and it’ll save them being disappointed after.

Really detailed video, sure a bit long for most folk. I will most likely grab one later on, but mainly for FPV drone footage and maybe as a backup for random small shots/angles thanks to its small size and weight at best. You're the first I've seen (as of now) that explains its negative sides as well. Great review, loved the thoroughness and sceptics point of view about it. Got mine yesterday and I think although they never advertised this is for PROs ( although they sure made it look like it could be ) I think they should have really lean into the everyday day joe angle. I had the first one too and I actually loved back then the inconspicuousness and the time limit to 15/the 30s. This was never meant to shoot 30m straight. They changed it because of the fan reactions in the first model and the should have probably locked this option in some dev mode. The normal person does not want to spend hours going through hours of footage. I am nobody so I am not paid to hype this thing up, but I was overly hyped even for the first generation. Even though I am a dedicated cameraman for the company and family business I see this as absolutely amazing for the non-dedicated one. Family parties you don't wanna smush mobile into the face of everyone. In nature where you just bump your chest and be in the moment rather than in the mindset of a cameraman that has to have the perfect angle. I would not be surprised if the mobile industry at one point come up with detachable camera modules just for this kind of a use. ( Most of the modules already look they are halfway there anyway ). As for your points: 1) I do notice some heat up during the transfer, not extreme by any means but annoyingly noticeable ( nothing during the actual recording, but then again I am not gonna shoot more than 1 minute straight 2) I did have a problem with the first edition where I downloaded a bunch of footage to my old iPhone5s, erased it from the camera and then I was fuuuuuuu*ked cause the iPhone actually did not have enough power to even play it properly, let alone export it. Now I have LGV30, not the newest kid around, but does just fine. Could be snappier for sure, but no deal-breaker. 3) Yes it does have worse footage than GoPro or iPhone but again, this have totally different use cases, it comes with a bunch of mounting options right out of the box and horizont lock which you have to buy additional gear for go Pro. All and all, great video, keep it up. ( Also I love like all the reviews start with " This is the smallest camera in the world!!!!" and then immediately follow by "So it is bigger than the previous model" x)
@MATechYoutube

I think part of my frustrations stem from the potential, as you say especially for parties etc it’s the perfect form factor to be discrete, and the expectations from the way I’ve utilised all usual footage shot on iPhone or external devices. I don’t think the speed of the app is best utilised but that’s not to say it can’t be still used as long as you’re aware of the limitations which no other KZitemrs seem to be highlighting. Just gives people more information to work with essentially. I’m not the kind of person that uses the built in ai video creator tools, i want to be in control of the footage so would rather have more video length to work with. Good point shoot it being bigger than the original too 😂 You make some very good points though and I appreciate the comment 👍🏽

I’ve not used any of the other Insta360 cameras, never really had an interest in them, this one has a lot going for it BUT it’s let down by those aspects. I noticed a few more reviews from other youtubers who’d originally made a paid video that now mention the same things about the battery drain and heat when transferring video from the camera to the phone. Desktop transfer is better and more reliable but until they release plugins for FCP rather than having to use the Insta360 app it’ll still be a 3 step process for me. What was the use case you were looking at this camera for? For short videos it’ll still be fine and if you use it inside the case then battery life is okay but out of the case and in pro mode you’ll either kill the battery or run out of memory in less than 15mins of video.

If you film 1-2min clips and then offload in low quality I’m sure it’ll be fine, but if you actually use it more and want good quality the whole process breaks down. It’s a shame because my daughter loves the camera and using it but each time she does I have to connect to my MacBook Pro and offload the footage and then spend time exporting it from the Insta360 app to actually be able to watch the videos back, such a longwinded process and compared to something like the go pro you can just take the sd card out and transfer the footage and it’s ready to use. It also doesn’t help that it makes a thumbnail size video copy which is basically using up space that could’ve extended the main video a little longer.

I really appreciate your thorough and honest review. I just browsed through about a dozen smashing positive reviews of the insta go 2 and you are right, most of them were influencers and they only highlighted the good parts. The reality is for $300 you can get a DJI Osmo Action which is better for true action cam purposes like the Go pro 9. I'd say the insta go 2 is for mainly people who want to small drones at lightweight and for those who want to film very short scenes or sequences on a dime's notice. Anything other than that is really poor. The fact that the camera can't record very long 5 to 10 minutes before it over heats or shuts off is a major down point and the fact that the battery is not replaceable so yes, for $300 this unit will be worthless after 1 year or less of constant use the battery will just be shot. Of course, for such tiny and lightweight camera, it's still amazing for what it can do and I think that is where people are paying most of their money for...the fact that it's so small and lightweight costs a premium so you can use it for very interesting projects/angles/viewpoints so it's a very "particular taste" type of camera and definitely not your everyday action camera since you can't even record much longer than 10 minutes. That's basically a drone camera in your hand. I love the direction it's heading though. We need to have real nanotech breakthrough to make tiny devices like this that can record 8-10 hours a day or longer, not over heat, shoot in 4 to 8k, be indestructible and waterproof etc.,....so we are getting there.

Exactly and I think to get to that place we need technology and in particular battery tech to improve massively, but we also need manufacturers who aren’t looking to just settle for “good enough” because the influencer movement allows them to sell items that realistically isn’t good enough to be on the market when you consider the software/hardware package as a whole. Some things have improved and some have got worse with the camera since it’s launch but all I see is positive videos and the reality is that it’s a brilliant form factor with incredibly frustrating usage. I’ll do my follow up video on this soon as it had been sat in my cupboard for the past few months however having used it a few times lately there’s still a lot that needs to be considered before people splash £300/$300 on this camera.

This will do around 14mins in a single go, but then you’ll need to charge it before you can transfer the footage off the camera and then once again allow it to charge before you can use it again. If you’re doing short 1-2min videos or can manage to mount the case to your bike rather than the camera outside of the case then you’ll fair better, but being completely honest a dedicated action camera would be a safer bet as you can upgrade you memory and swap out batteries far quicker than charging this thing or transferring data over Wi-Fi to clear it ready for another video. I’ll be honest the form factor makes this camera extremely unique but it’s also the main sticking point when it comes to physics and the internal memory/battery size and heat dissipation are the result of that small form factor.

If I try to use it as a utility B camera - like I use my GoPros - yeah it kind of sucks. Working off of the files whilst still on the camera is a recipe for disaster! That DOES take forever as you have to offload and then export. When using other cameras do you ever edit off of the SD card? Most likely not, hence what you were doing is not a good way to do things with this camera or any cameras :) Batch export at 125 mbps didn't work at all for me, maybe because a single clips maxes out at mbps. I've never had the option for 125mbps with a single clip. You raised a lot of good points, it's just a shame the video was all tell and not show. This is after all about a camera so when talking about things like image quality why not show examples? This is just my constructive feedback :)

I appreciate you commenting on my video, originally this was only meant to be a shorter 10min video but as you mentioned in your own video, you end up re-doing the video with more and more info. I didn’t want to just drop comments without giving context to them so figure I may as well go all out and do the video longer and give detail. I usually do add b-roll but as for picture quality there’s so many other videos out there that have sample videos and most of the early “reviews” were nothing but videos from the camera so I wanted to concentrate on actual usage, and concentrate on the issues I experienced. Baring in mind yours and mine usage would probably be very different to anyone buying this as their only camera for those types of shots where as we’d have our phones and digital cameras to choose from as well. Coming back to the app, Yes I did try copying to the app only and then exporting later, HOWEVER this then presents another problem, the iPhone app doesn’t allow me to re-frame the shot like I can on the desktop and if I export it from the iPhone I can’t them work it in the desktop app but still have to deal with the lengthy rendering times🤷🏽♂️ With regards to the 125mbps I did manage to offload a few videos at that if done individually but not batch videos and being perfectly honest after trying it twice and it failing after that point I just went straight to copying to my MacBook and then using that to handle the footage. I’m still using the camera as I mentioned in the video and trying to find my work arounds and I’m planning another video soon but haven’t had time to shoot it yet.

It’s funny because those who are used to the stays quo of being spoon fed the positives of every product kept disliking my videos after I made this yet most of the comments I get are the contrary. When I’m buying a new product as much as it helps to know the features as highlighted by all those other videos the key things I want to know are the downsides and that’s something that no one wants to do because they don’t want to be left out when it comes to getting review units.

You’re welcome, and yes unfortunately telling it how it is on KZitem generally gets you hate, it’s all good though. What the haters don’t get is if you don’t highlight the problems the manufacturers are never motivated to make improvements to their next model. Also niche products like this tend to seem great on paper and in the adverts but practical usage usually differs greatly and that’s what we need to push them to make the best possible.
@MiuraDronesKanagawa

You are spot on with some things, but off on others because you are reviewing based on how you as an individual render and edit your footage and assuming most others do the same. There is no problem transferring the clip or clips to a PC, and I've been able to edit the footage in FilmoraX without having to do anything at all to it first. Additionally you can easily turn off the light. Its in the settings menu. You just have to go through it. The icon looks like a sun setting on a horizon, its actually supposed to look like a light. There you can turn off and on the light which will help save some battery life. While its obvious you dont like the camera, although you say its not biased, I think you should use it more and consider doing another review. All your points about over heating are well taken. That is a fact.

You should watch my follow up videos as most of the points you’ve made are already mentioned in them. With regards to importing footage, if you use Pro or hdr mode then you can’t just import directly, you have a fish eye Recording so that needs to be rendered before you can use it (as the fcp plugin doesn’t work). As for it being obvious I don’t like the camera, I’ve said on multiple occasions I like the camera, but the user experience needs to be better. This is all discussed in my follow up videos in more detail anyway.

Hi just came across your channel. Extremely useful video. I'm looking to buy this cam as its tiny and I can use it my cat. Really want to find out where he goes. I know the live preview is there but no one talks about it in detail - does it only work if phone and cam are under same wifi or it creates a direct wifi between cam and phone and more importantly what's the range before the preview gets disconnected. Coming to the execution of my plan 30 min footage is pretty useless as I would need to exactly know when to turn it on to capture what I need and if it's even possible to remotely switch it on if my cat is at a neighbour's house. So this is the main purpose for which I'm buying this camera. Other than that I like to go on treks/hikes and I usually capture a lot of footage using my phone and spend a lot more time to select the good portions to make a good video and share it. So in this case due to 30 min footage it probably becomes like Twitter and we have think about the right moments we want to capture and I guess in a positive way that'll make me better "vlogger" but if the transfer is a nightmare I'm not sure what I can do. Most hike/trek I go is around a waterfall and if I take my laptop with me that's a lot of weight and risk of damaging it while climbing and also restlessness when you leave the laptop unattended when you go for a swim. So it's basically 30 min footage max even with the charging case if I had used it my last hike which 6h up and down. I'm not a professional KZitemr or influencer to have two action cams. I love to capture moments hence going to extreme to keep recording in my phone even while climbing fairly steep, tough rocks. Mainly buying this because of my worries about my pet. So, is there any work around for the transfer issue? even the 1.5h battery is something I can make do with a combination of my phone and this cam but the transfer 🥲 And secondly is there any other alternative? A tiny action cam that can fit around a cat's neck? I saw the insta 360 X2/X3 but it's too big. How about the DJI action 2? Will check out it's review in your channel. Subbed ✌🏾. Please share an alternative. I've seen you have been replying even to recent comments so I hope you see this. Going to actually base my purchase decision in few days based on your verdict.
@MATechYoutube

I have mentioned the live stream option but the reason most won’t use it because it kills the battery in around 14mins or less in my testing. It uses a direct connection to the camera therefore once out of range it’ll disconnect and there’s no way to reconnect till you’re back in range. Regarding the cat adventures you could use Timelapse modes and that would just give you a very quick idea of where it’s been of to but you wouldn’t be able to see a lot of details obviously as it would be sped up. There are other alternatives like the Dji action 2 which depending on where you are (I’m in the UK) has an issues where a heat threshold can’t be turned off and thus it overheats and shuts down. For international models I believe you can disable that and it would keep working but that was a firmware thing and could change at any time which is why I returned mine when it first came out. This camera now has a bigger storage option so that would help you regards to record time but battery life will always be the limiting factor for this camera and being a sealed unit the battery will only ever get worse as it ages. As far as transfer times go smaller files will make life easier as in my experience when you have large files it’s more likely to time out and crash whilst exporting. I’ve not used mine in over a year and it’s sat gathering dust currently.

@@MATechKZitem thanks for the quick reply. I didn't think about the time lapse, that's a good idea. Wifi preview would be the same on any device I guess. As for the transfer issue, I've seen solutions with otg cables and the speed is around 2.5 mins for 3gb which would still make it like an hour if we want to transfer 60gb during a hike which won't be feasible always. And some people have mentioned even that method isn't working after the last firmware update(probably because they want to sell their card reader). Not sure what's the speed on card reader they sell but that and the power mount accessories are not listed and the camera itself is out of stock whenever I checked on the main site. It's still available in Amazon though. Hoping they release Go 3 in a couple of months based on the timeline of previous Go models release. Otherwise will have to stick with this one.

Very good points about the transfer to phone. I do wonder if an android phone transferring via OTG will be drag and drop like a PC. Avoiding WiFi and a bulky laptop to offload vids. Careful, the “bunny ear” hinges look so fragile I am surprised nobody mention it.
@MATechYoutube
3 жыл бұрын
It’s not the file transfer speed per se what’s the issue. You see standard video is essentially already recorded in 16:9 or 9:16, pro video (and I believe hdr video as well) record in a 1:1 aspect ratio so they have to be rendered in either 16:9 or 9:16 before they can actually be usable. It’s the rendering that takes the time and the app doesn’t give you an option to offload to the phone and leave the rendering till later as far as I can see, but even if you could you still have to go through that rendering step before you can use the footage. And yes the tripod stand (or bunny ears as my daughter calls them) are extremely weak and I do image some people will find they end up breaking off if this is actually used in the case out and about (which is only way you maximise battery life).
@philipbloom
3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can offload much quicker via a hard connection to your android phone. It will act as storage essentially as there is no way to bring that into the app after offloading....well there is but it's incredibly convoluted and involves transferring to your computer and back again. The desktop app is better for sure anyway, it just lacks keyframes and rotate ability.
@MATechYoutube
3 жыл бұрын
Slight correction/elaboration on my above comment, yes you can offload to the iPhone Insta360 app, however the mobile app doesn’t allow for reframing like the desktop app can and you can’t just send it from the iPhone app to the desktop without rendering the video as at that stage it’s solely in the Insta360 app and not the camera roll. The desktop app is where you want to be editing these video, atleast until they improve the iPhone app and enable the desktop features in the mobile app. I don’t use android so can’t comment on their app however I’m aware you can save to android and use that solely as storage but does still involve an extra step nevertheless.

I was annoyed by the flood of “reviews” that either never even mentioned the flaws or glossed over them like they were nothing when in reality for the people buying the camera they’d make life so awkward and you’d end up working within the constraints of the camera rather than just enjoying the moment as it’s supposed to allow. I like to put myself in the shoes of the normal user and being tech savvy if something annoys me then I know it’ll annoy others who are paying for the camera, that doesn’t apply so much when you’re sent a product for free so I get that point of view but as you’ll see from my other videos I’m all about trying to stop people making mistakes on products and wasting their time or money rather than just boosting a product because it gets me in someone’s good books.

Go pro is also far from perfect (my nephew used one for his channel and I’m planning a video on that too) but it’s a lot more useable in real terms still. I’ll film a follow up on this soon.

Thanks for discussing the limitations in such detail. It was definitely worth watching all the way through. I ordered one because it fits what I want to use it for, and knowing its limitations helps to manage expectations. However, I really appreciated some of the issues you discussed, especially concerning charging and USB-A, that I would NOT have expected and would have been a rude surprise when I encountered them!

You also can’t charge it using a usb-c to usb-c cable, it has to be charged with a usb a to usb c 🤦🏽♂️ That was the whole idea behind the video, no product is perfect however none of the reviews even discussed the issues I’ve raised and that makes it even more disappointing for customer who pay money for it, whereas if you’re aware of the limitations then you adapt your usage to suit.

@@MATechKZitem Hello, but can you transfer files via USC C to C? eg. from the camera into an ipad pro?

No, it has to be from USB-C to USB-A and that’s at USB-A speeds too.

@@MATechKZitem okay, so technically, if I use a USB hub on the ipad pro, then I can use the USB A to C to transfer the files between the camera and ipad? :)
@MATechYoutube

No, the camera has a USB-C port, but the other end of the cable has to connect via a USB-A cable, you can use a USB-A to USB-C hub on the iPad side but I’ve only done this on Mac not iPad. The other thing I can’t confirm is whether you can drag and drop the files on iPad to the mobile Insta360 app, on the desktop you can but haven’t tried that on mobile. If you shoot in standard mode the above step may not be necessary but if you use the pro mode (that’s the only mode you’ll want to use) the. It records in 1:1 fish eye and had to be rendered in either 16:9/9:16 before it’s useful.

It’s not a bad camera, but the thinking behind battery life, and file transfer really hasn’t been thought out for “real world usage” beyond influencer/social media clips. In fact if it was called clips it would be better rather than aiming against action cameras where you can just swap the memory card and battery and carry on shooting. 👍🏽

I think this camera is a "special application" camera. Best for short clips and best where it's size and attachment methods make it unique. In no way should it be compared to a DSL Action camera, a DSL Pocket, or a GoPro. It is, rather, a supplement.

We run and gun with the camera all day with the camera on my head and pulling it down to vlog and back on the head or stuck to a wall or to my car and constantly download the video, about to buy a dedicated laptop JUST to download this video from the camera every second I'm not filming and transferring it to the external hard drive since the computer can't hold the terabytes of video I'm constantly creating with this camera. I really could use a charging cap mount. Oh.... I mean.... Woof Woof.

I used mine very little, about half a year. Left it on my desk for a couple of months unused, unopened. Now it is impossible to charge or turn on in any way! Apparently it is something that a lot of people experienced. Insta360 asks you to send it bak but it would cost almost as much as a new one. So, please, think twice before purchasing it. Very frustrating as in fact I quite liked it.

I have a question because you seem to be pretty knowledgeable on this camera... The camera itself....when it runs out of charge and blinks off with the red light....how long do I have to recharge it for in its craddel? Plugged into an outlet I assume? The craddel itself has a green indicator light....but the camera has run out of charge blinks red and dies and I can not find instruction anywhere on how to recharge it or for how long without damaging the internal battery. Thank you in advance I found a link you needed concerning the LED issues you spoke about earlier....I copied it... kzitem.info/news/bejne/pYOB1KekrIeWd4o

To recharge in this scenario just put it back into the case, it’ll automatically recharge. When it’s in the case and disconnected (I.e. not paired to the remote) the led should be red and it will be charging. Note however the case will only charge for 1 hour before it goes into standby , that should be more than enough to charge the camera fully from completely dead but as I’ve found on occasions it doesn’t always happen. Oh and I’d already sorted the LED issue, see my newer videos for info on that.
@Index-o1234

@@MATechKZitem I am alittle confused there are no LED lights on when disconnected to indicate wheather it is charging or not. Do you mean it the "Case" will fully charge the camera while it is unplugged? I had the case with the camera in it plugged in for about an hour.....The indicator light was green at all times....but the camera....I turnws it on it went from a blue to an almost violet color.( I am unaware of the name of that color?) Then it immediately turns red and turns itself off....😞- Im about to wrap it up and gift it to my own kids.....Who has time for this stupidity?
@MATechYoutube
3 жыл бұрын
Yes green on the case means that’s fully charged, then the camera turns red when it’s charging, when it’s fully charged it will stay blue when on and flashing white when recording. If the camera is too low on battery it will switch off so let it charge. If it isn’t charge automatically press the mode button with the case open and that should disconnect and force the light on the camera to go red and begin charging.
