Actually, the guy on the cross next to Jesus was most likely a zealot rather than s thief. It seems to be a translation thing, but the word used in Koine Greek can be used for revolutionaries, and the cross wad a very common punish for revolutionaries, not actual thieves.

I rewatched the scene of Lazarus rising and found that the sketchy guy had two rings on the fingers of his right hand. One on the pinky and one on the ring finger. In ancient Roman culture rings on the pinky finger denoted wealth, citizenship or status and could also be where a signet ring was kept. So this guy was wealthy and had some status and possibly Roman citizenship. My guess is that this might be Saul of Tarsus. Saul was a Pharisee who studied under Rabbi Gamaliel. He was also a Roman citizen. The multiple rings might hint at this despite his attempts at disguising himself. He dressed in rags with sack cloth over his head to look poor and nondescript. but kept his rings on? If they prove his Roman citizenship that would be a good reason not to take them off while traveling around-lest there’s trouble with this Jesus of Nazareth fellow and he’s swept up and arrested with the rest of the people around. Having a ring to prove who he was would prevent him from getting flogged if he got arrested. So my money is on it being Saul or an unnamed Roman spy.
@TheCoasterLisa

That was my first thought as well as Saul became the worst persecutor of the early church of which he was deeply deeply troubled by after becoming a believer. He struggled with it the rest of his earthly life. It might have contributed to his thorn in the flesh that kept him humble. But, we will see.

Good possibility because Dallas did say he might delve into the early Acts (at least through the stoning of St. Stephen) where Saul is first introduced.

If Saul saw the ressurection of Lazarus, would he have persecuted the church initially the way he did at first? I always thought that Saul's actions were those of one who would have thought Jesus' power and reputation was mere heresay that is infecting true religion, and that his followers were false prophets.

He was selected by God by lot among 12 other men of Judah when it came time for the temple priests to find a 'suitable protector' for Mary at age 12. She was to marry at 14, which was the tradition. She had grown up in the temple from age 3. Joseph was reluctant at first but his staff budded like Aaron's as a sign & he was assured by God to take Mary into his home. The Protoevangelion of Iacovos (James)' and the 'History of Joseph the Carpenter' are 2 very interesting detailed accounts.

They could be stolen rings and seem out of place together on his hand like that. Also, would a criminal be inclined to wear the tzitzit, which he is not doing, as you said--I don't know? And why would he be a regular dude and feel the need to stand way back there and covering his head if he wasn't meant to seem secretive/curious/sneaky or get attention from us? For sure, I think we're meant to speculate as we're doing. lol But then, why would the criminal even be there and why would he care so much unless he'd already been interested? Just some thoughts. 🙂

Discussion was great. I cannot see the thief on the cross as he would have to been adjudicated and sentenced. At this point, we're just a very short time frame away from the crucifixion. Am I right? Same reason it cannot be Barabas. He was a murderer and would have had to be tried, adjudicated and sentenced nearly by now. You didn't bring up the possibility that it is Saul of Taursus. He was alive at this point and, if scholars are right, he'd be in his mid 20's now. There are reasons why it could be and why it might not be.

i really am hoping for some of the other important moments from the gospels, perhaps as flashbacks. We need the baptism of Christ by John and Mt. Transfiguration. Only three times did God's voice boom out of heaven for Jesus, and these are two of them.

Sorry if this has already been commented on and I could be reading too much into this, but I thought I noticed someone following the group on the road to Bethany. As Mary and Little James are in their "walk & talk", it seemed someone in dark clothing was careful to maintain a certain distance off of Mary's left shoulder. Could have just been an extra, but they really caught my attention during that segment. As the camera focused on this guy at the tomb, my mind went back to that occurance on the road.

The only problem i have about the thief theory is that while on the cross he was going along with both the religious leaders and other thief insulting him with same words as the religious leaders to come down off the cross If he just saw jesus raise someone from the grave why then insult him on the cross and then repent?

Not sure why you think he has a thin face when we can’t see all his face. I thought he looked similar to the taller zealot in stature and facial features but the two rings would suggest someone rich. I also think it would be unlikely the thief on the cross would be rich unless circumstances changed drastically to tempt him to steal. He did not appear to show any emotion to the amazing miracle he witnessed which is interesting. Definitely appeared to want to hide his identity making him even more conspicuous. Nice touch Dallas.

I think this guy is Malchus, the servant of the high priest, whose ear Simon Peter will cut off. This would explain the ring and the clothes. He may have been told to remove his tzittzit for spy purposes. I think Barabbas was the Zealot who Simon Z talked to in season 3 who had a heart change.

Gospel of John, Chapter 12, verses 20-24 says: "Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the festival. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. 'Sir,' they said, 'we would like to see Jesus.' Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus. Jesus replied, 'The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.'"

@@tjsmith7290No! «Exodus 13:1-2 reveals something very important about the firstborn in Israel: “The Lord said to Moses, ‘Consecrate to me all the firstborn; whatever is the first to open the womb among the people of Israel, both of man and beast, is mine.’” The “firstborn” were not given the title because there was a “second-born.” They were called “firstborn” at birth. Jesus being “firstborn” does not require that more siblings be born after him.(Catholic Answers: The case of Mary's perpetual virginity).» Jesus has no brothers or sisters as other children of His mother! This is founded in Scripture, as it is demonstrated by Dr. L. Neidhart, a German Roman Catholic theologian in his study: «The "brothers of Jesus": Did Mary have several children or did she always live virgin?» Especially Chapter three: «Scriptural evidence for the fact that Jesus had no physical siblings.» Author: Dr. L. It seems to me, Barabus is a likely character. It makes sense if he had a similar response to Jesus’s resurrection of Lazarus as Judas had, ie that was his motivation to murder some Romans thinking that Jesus, the Messiah, was about to destroy the Romans. But, the flaw in that thought is no tsitsit.

I also do not think it would be satan mainly because we don't get any "satan music" when they show his face. The music is so consistently showing what is going on in the spirit realm and I think we would have had a huge musical clue if it were satan. also, I noticed that he seemed to notice when the saducee left and then took off after him. as if he was interested in what the saducee was about to do.
