While I am generally against price fixing, Ozempic was a terrible example for arguing against price gouging as would any other pharmaceutical product because the pharmaceutical industry is notorious for deceptive accounting practices and price gouging. Whenever person starts with a “what if” to explain their position means that they do NOT have a for real example. They do NOT have a for real example because a for real example does NOT exists. Pharmaceutical companies have patent protections that give them monopolies over certain drugs so there is no competition. Additionally they do NOT sell their drugs in other countries for the high prices that they sell them for in the US. Why? The US is their profit center. The US “free market” system allows them to gouge Americans. The US Government is run by corporations. Thus most of what the US Government does is to the benefit of corporations. Every once in a while, because the people are hurting so much, the government has to “ say” or do something that might marginally seem to benefit the people, but rest assured the Government works for corporations. DO NOT IGNORE THAT FACT!

Some good education here. While I agree with a lot of points, what must be mentioned is that the lack of competition is also due to the conglomeration of large companies into large monopolies which often results in unfair prices. We are not in a free market. In my city, there are only a few supermarket chains, and there is nothing stopping them from colluding.
@randyra88
Ай бұрын
there has to be evidence behind that sort of accusation. You should base your worldview on objectivity instead of feeling. For instance, if supermarket chains commands too high margins, small independent grocery stalls can pop up and disrupt the supermarket.
@randyra88
Ай бұрын
Unless of course, there is a government regulation prohibiting those small stalls to pop up. That could be the case in communist countries. But in a free market country, supply and demands correct market price naturally.
@defaultytuser
13 күн бұрын
@@randyra88in my country we have what the OP pointed even though there is a “facade” of free market. The way it works is government and unions collude to impose ridiculous bureaucracy and super high taxes that elevate the minimum operating costs to a level that is just impossible to sustain by small businesses. It’s “hidden” socialism like this that is killing the West, luckily last year we got a libertarian president so things are starting to look better!

I think the arguement on pricing is that the profit margin shown is after wages and bonuses paid out to top corporate workers such as multi million dollar bonuses. So they can keep a 1% total company profit margin, after all of that and much more is taken into consideration. And that is where the argument is coming from. So I think the argument is being looked at differently by you, then by those comments you brought up about price gouging. I think this goes to show that you can argue any point and make it correct with enough knowledge on the topic.

The fundamental issue lies in the lack of balance in the mindset of those who prioritize personal profit over the well-being of humanity. This self-serving approach becomes the dominant force in our economic system, setting a standard that others must follow just to survive. However, this isn’t the only path. If a majority of people chose to act with a collective interest in mind, we could counteract this self-centered mentality and foster a positive feedback loop rather than a negative one. Yet, human nature, influenced by the hierarchy of needs, tends to reinforce the status quo. We are essentially stuck in a cycle dictated by our primal instincts-unless we can evolve beyond this aspect of our nature. This concept is well illustrated by the "prisoner's dilemma" in game theory, which shows how strategic behavior often leads to suboptimal outcomes when entities prioritize individual gains over cooperation. When applying this to our current capitalist economic model, especially with the layers of investment that seek profit without contributing real value, we encounter a significant breakdown in the purpose of currency in a healthy economy. The practice of making money from money, without any direct connection to the production of goods or services, corrupts the system. When corporations enjoy the benefits of socialism while the rest of society faces a distorted form of capitalism, the imbalance becomes glaring. The result is a financial system that supports and perpetuates the very inequalities it should be preventing.

I would think standardized package sizing would be legal, since Congress has Constitutional control over weights an measures. So at least people can compare what their paying for. Even if you look at the price/ unit, oz, lbs, it's beyond most people's ability to calculate on the fly. Sometimes the "Value" size isn't cheaper. Games are played in retail.
@a1isrising

if you look on the price tags it tells what the prices are in units per pagage and or bag say a bag of chips coast $5 on the tag it will tell you what price is per unit of weight its .85 per oz or per gram vs a competing product i do this when things are in sale because sometimes just because it a cheaper sale price it still a high per the weight and a 10oz bag of coffee is $12 but the its 13 for the 12oz bag just some exsamples

Some also do not understand how the dilution of money creates higher prices for everything. Try buying a car for cash these days. 2 different prices, the cash price and the price if you get a loan through the dealership. $5k more for cash vs loan on a $40k vehicle. That loan created money into the system, = more money dilution. Stupid, as this also promotes inflation.

You are missing a moment. When monopolies are the only providers in a geographically limited market, margins will increase. In Norway, we have only three verticals that control the food market from the purchase of grain to the consumer's table. In the middle of the value chain, there are even horizontal collaborations between these value chains. There are also taxes and market access barriers created by both the authorities and the monopolies. Then you end up in a situation where the prices are unreasonably high. But even here, price control is not the answer. The socialists tried it in the 90s with disastrous consequences for ordinary people. Less government control and increased competition is the answer. But no politician in Norway wants to do anything about these two conditions. Because it removes the politicians' power over the people.
