what I find interesting is that the actors all staying in character even when they thought gene was actually going insane
@Vihtic

I'm pretty sure every line that they said was planned and rehearsed. You really think they threw them into this boat ride with gene wilder saying this crazy shit and put all of their dialogue straight to the film? No. Every line in there was planned, written and shown to them to repeat when the cameras started rolling. "Staying in character" is them reciting the lines they studies the night before the shoot.
@theoneneolink

Well yes in this case although some directors do withhold information from their actors about what happens in a scene in order to capture a genuine performance. For example, in Alien. ;)
@thomasjenkins7506

the actors' lines were planned, but wilder's were not. much of what he did on set was not revealed to the rest of the cast. wonka's entrance at the beginning, this scene, and the scene in which he yells at charlie were just a few such scenes.

Actually, a lot of actors and actresses try throwing in an ad-lib or two in one of about fifty takes and sometimes the director decides to keep it in. Some rather infamous scenes from more modern movies have bits like this that were never planned at all. Remember that stormtrooper hitting his head? You think they planned that? I dont think you CAN plan something like that - it HAS to happen by accident for you to realize how genuinely clever it would've been to do on purpose. If there is ANYONE I would not put it past to crash a scene with an entire prewritten poem in character of a semi-madman, it would've been Gene Wilder. I totally believe he may have done this with nobodies prior knowledge and the director liked and kept it. After all, funny how it seems to mostly interrupt the background flashes that the rest of that scene is centered around.

+pjamese3 AYAHUASCA & MAGIC MUSHROOM REFERENCES IN WILLY WONKA (CHOCOLATE IS ALSO AN MAOI LIKE AYAHUASCA) After having been on an ayahuasca journey, I now understand the symbolism of this scene: The water is the color and consistency of ayahuasca. There are magic mushrooms along the shoreline. (specifically Amanita muscaria) Willy is the shaman who leads the journey. Willy uses his poetry as an icaro. (shaman's guiding chant/song) The visuals start with architectural forms within a black void. They move forward through fearful scenes. After the fearful part of their journey, they can now continue their journey through the magical factory to learn lessons about themselves. Those characters (representing personality flaws) are purged throughout the tour to leave only the one that is pure.

I saw the Tom and Jerry version of this scene (seriously I can't get over how they got away with saying "Hell"), and even that insanity doesn't hold up to the sense of primal fear performed in this version. Gene Wilder did an amazing job in this scene; he alone is making my heart race. Kudos to this movie for providing a really scary scene that I'm surprised no one in the movie mentioned again. EXPLANATION OF THIS SCENE: The tunnel is meant to reveal each person on the boat's greatest fear; we see each person's one at a time. We see that Charlie's image is Slugworth which reveals that his greatest fear is losing the precious secrets of the factory he cares so deeply about. This scene is a foreshadowing of what is revealed at the end of the movie that the purpose of the tour is to select a new heir who truly loves the Chocolate Factory who is Charlie.
