The audio lag is due to the linux kernal, and there is no way around it. The buffers are hard coded, and it would be difficult to make a fork of linux that handled audio differently. One of the few things the ios and macos kernals do well is handle audio on a 64ms timer interrupt (might be a little off on the number there). It eats in to CPU and bus performance a bit, but ensures low audio latency. This is why you can have proper real-time DJ software on those platforms without needing an external peripheral, like you do on android/linux. The input lag is also related to this issue. Buffers... A good approach to making a mainframe OS, not so good when that same kernal design mentality is used in an interactive device.

@Vintersorg88

There are ways around that. Any powerful enough Raspberry Pi or similar, running RetroArch, can emulate audio perfectly. Yes, even input lag is kept in a minimum. I know there's licensing issues and stuff, but the Linux kernel isn't any obstacle to a good emulation. It can be done.
@SeveredLegs
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the insight. Why is it that the SNES Classic was able to improve upon this from the NES Classic, considering the hardware is so similar? And also, why do you think it is that installing Retroarch basically eliminates this on these same systems? I have extensive experience with NES/SNES Classic and Genesis Mini systems, and I've virtually eliminated input lag and sound sync issues. Seems like Nintendo/M2 could have managed better, even with the hardware limitations that you speak of.
@Vintersorg88
4 жыл бұрын
@@SeveredLegs Even though I've known about people using RetroArch in mini consoles, I've never used it that way myself. I test RetroArch on x64 computers and on Raspberry Pi boards, both using Linux based distributions. Unfortunately, I don't have any technical explanation of how RetroArch does what it does, but I know it's done mostly (or all) on software level. I also know Linux have something called Kernel Mode Setting (KMS) which, if used, helps even more with the input lag. Finally, RetroArch has many options for fine tuning that can help latency. I mess around with emulation since 1999, and have seen a consistent improvement over the years. It started bad, granted, but I'm starting to think it can easily match (or even surpass, in some cases) the original hardware. Maybe someone could throw you a bunch of technical articles and extensive tutorials, but... It's not my case. I just install RetroArch and everything goes fine. I must note though: 1. Some LCD screens are terrible for gaming, so you could notice some input lag on them. 2. Linux distributions are very fragmented, so results may vary. 3. Maybe it's placebo, but I think latency is even lower on some specialized Linux distributions for the Raspberry Pi. 4. RetroArch was not always that good. I first used it in 2012 and hated it. Used it again in 2014 and thought it was a little better. Because of that, I started a habit of checking it every now and then. Seems to get better with time. I hope I've been useful with my account. If you were waiting for something more technical, I know there are some articles on the web, because I've seen them around.

I feel like a lot of reviewers seem to ignore how much of a difference the TV makes when it comes to retro consoles. Some TV's do so much post-processing it introduces silly amounts of lag, even if they have a so-called game mode. That's why there is so much variation in user experience. It's a pity we can't all be using CRT's to eliminate that.

Momotaro Dentetsu (roughly "Momotaro's Electric Railway") is a pun on Momotaro Densetsu ("The Legend of Momotaro"), a Famicom adventure game by Hudson Soft, based on a Japanese folklore character named Momotaro. It's a digital board game that combines elements of The Game of Life, Monopoly, and Backgammon, and the series is _immensely_ popular in Japan. The delay is down to the hdmi sound set up. In your tv sound settings (usually advanced options) find digital delay and digital offset or something worded similar depending on the brand and adjust to remove the delay, also if your tv has the option switch pcm off and choose stereo uncompressed, turn off any auto leveling and processing that will prevent the audio being re routed into the effects bus. If you are feeding audio via a modern AV/amp with hdmi you will have to also eradicate the off set in that also or just buy a non hdmi analogue stereo amp and use that.

Those foam sheets make great dust covers, at least until you get your console likeness dust covers from Printerboy.

I really liked Dave and just the opinions of two guys so invested in the gaming world thought me a lot about the classic consoles and games, and pretty much shaped my own opinions about the genre. That being said, I think the video's Joe makes alone are way more watchable and in my view a lot funnier. I really respect the effort you put into making reviews! So thank you Joe, for al your amazing work and I'll be watching you till either one of us dies:p

Joe, Splatterhouse is on the PC Engine mini, but is found on the PC Engine side, not the Turbo Grafx. You get the original uncensored Japanese release with the PC Engine mini. Meaning white mask, cross boss, and the cathedral alter are all in tacked!

I just went by the list of games for each Mini console on Wikipedia since I don't actually have a PC Engine Mini.
@marbles8641

@@GameSack aahh makes sense! Their page entry shows two listings for splatter house if you look, with the Us one on the core/turbo and the Japanese on the PC. Of the three minis, I like the Core the most, all the English bonuses and a much smaller form factor. Sadly still the censored Splatterhouse though.

Again, as someone who never owned a Turbo Graffx console originally, I’ll probably play this a lot

Just wish the TG Mini didn't have duplicates of the same game in the Library. One of my favorite TG game's of all time is Bloody Wolf which should've been added.

The Sound-Lag is probably introduced by HDMI. I remember having sound delay when playing rocksmith on the PS3 when using HDMI with the only fix being routing the audio through AV cables into a HiFi system. I remember the game coming with a note inside the box telling you that this is really the only way to play this game without any audio delay.
@Chaos89P

So, is the audio lag issue fixed if you hook the HDMI cable to a converter box?
@MrAndy193

@@Chaos89P never tried a converter box. Luckily the PS3 still had the old AV output and optical so I just routed the audio to my HiFi.

I love my Turbo Mini. When I learned awesome this system was, I was priced out of collecting for it and this is just a great bundle. Can't wait until modding becomes a thing and I can replace some of these titles with better ones.
@vivisect53

Yea it's expensive to collect for, I have one and about 30 games but will probably buy this as my only mini system just because it's cheaper than buying 1 or 2 of the better games I'm missing...lol I think I might get the PC engine mini though just for the different look.

I think those mini consoles are a great idea. They're affordable, reliable, include enough games to introduce a player to their capabilities without spending hundreds of dollars collecting (in some cases decades old) used electronics that may or may NOT work. And the companies making them get some revenue that they can put to good use doing whatever it is they do. Thanks for another great review my friend, good stuff indeed!👍 👍

Awesome review, Joe! I bought the TG-16 mini and haven't been disappointed...yet. The only reason I wanted one was for Rondo of Blood but I found myself enjoying the rest of the game selection. 16 MEGA POWER!!!

I've written that the kid's I hung out with had MONEY so most had these game systems at their house's but we NEVER touched them as we we're NEVER sitting still long enough to play any game's but there was ONE we managed to play for HOURS and HOUR'S. ....QUARTERS. With beer and liqueur

I guess the system is so big because they designed the circuit board in Japan to fit the square PC Engine and there's no way to fit that square into a rectangular Turbo Grafx without scaling everything up

I think this is a really good point: most of us is fine having a window to stare at our childhoods. We do not have the will or the means to revive them. Most of us did not have access to the official product back then or now. For those factors, i think these are great for what they are, with all their compromises. The original experience also had its compromises, like lack of save states, faulty hardware that broke or malfunctioned, etc

Super Darius is awesome, since it features 26 unique bosses that were originally planned for the game, even though the arcade version cut it down to 11 unique ones. Also, the Nintendo Switch Hori Real Arcade Pro works natively on this mini console, which makes it my preferred controller of choice.
