Each species has a function in an ecosystem. Some are more important, some less - or maybe we just never understood their role. In any case, the extinction of a species always poses a risk to equilibrium. Today we live and participate in the sixth great mass extinction on earth. While other extinctions were caused by natural events, today it is clear that it is our human activities, from hunting, fishing, habitat destruction, to cause this disaster.
I have always maintained that the "underdevelopment" so present in Calabria is actually a huge resource. A fortune in the "misfortune" that allows us today to host "La Costa delle Tartarughe". It also allows us to develop the territory under criteria of sustainability, of harmony with ecosystems, with a view to integration instead of destroying nature.
Haven't you ever heard of that coast? Maybe you know the Costa dei Gelsomini, where today the jasmines are no longer there (cultivation has ceased as the aroma has been artificially synthesized). However, the highest presence of documented turtle nests remains throughout the Italian territory, including the islands - with the opportunity of a completely different, sustainable and positive tourism, far from mass logic and respectful not only of fauna, but also of cultures locals.
I am delighted by the opportunity of every opportunity to collaborate with Caretta Calabria Conservation and learn about their work, which receives ever-increasing national and international attention. This video is part of the #lessplasticmorelife Istituto Oikos Onlus campaign and was funded by EOCA European Outdoor Conservation Association and @The North Face.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to the creation, especially to Salvatore Urso who involved me, to Gianni Parise, Andrea Benvenuti Photography and Roberta Monti for having contributed with images and to Beppe Tuoto for lending his voice. Thanks also to my friend Giuseppe Iemme for an indirect but very important contribution. Music is licensed through audiio.com
Write your thoughts in the comments and consider making a small donation to Caretta Calabria Conservation. Even € 1 makes a difference and can help insure another baby turtle at sea.
